It's interesting that he says player retention improved a lot when they added PvP. I wouldn't have thought that would be a major selling point. I haven't played AoC so I'm not sure what's going on with it. Is it a case of PvP giving players at max level something to do where there previously wasn't anything/much?

Aah CIH. I remember sitting up late at night the evening before April 26th. It was 1 or 2 years after the virus first hit so I wasn't overly concerend but I had it in the back of my mind since it had been on the news again that day. Sure enough at midnight my computer froze, woooops! I hit the power button as fast as I could and then I waited 24 hours before I dared try turning it on again. No luck, computer was dead. I'm not sure if the service people did some recovery with the hard drive or if I hit the button fast enough but all the data was still there when I got it back with a new motherboard. I started using antivirus after that(!).

It'll build strength and calluses on your fingertips indeed. Which is another problem with making a game with a real guitar controller. Playing guitar hurts. When you first start, you basically flay away the skin on your fingertips and only after you develop calluses are you able to play for more than a short time without severe discomfort. How many people are going to want to go through that in order to play when they can just use a normal controller?

A fair point but part of the equation is also that a film gives you two hours of entertainment whereas a game gives you perhaps 20-50+ hours.

Depends on the film. Most of the films I buy give me 50+ hours of entertainment, though I take it in 2-3 minute bits a few times a day (not including fast fowarding to the right parts).
