I wouldn't close my paypal account just based on this. You have other payment options when buying stuff off ebay, you don't have to use paypal. If the seller only accepts paypal try to work out other payment terms or bid on the same item where the seller does accept other forms of payment. The article claims that less than .5% of all paypal transactions are fraud. That's pretty damn good considering how many transactions go through paypal in a day. If it weren't for paypal, I'd have to mail my rent checks to my landlord every month. (shudder)

There, I answered your question. Now why don't you answer it yourself? (Instead of just saying "X was better") What exactly does Master & Commander, Lost in Translation, and Last Samurai have that proves superior "artistic merit"?

Having seen both Lost in Translation and RotK I think that Lost in Translation was the better film and deserved the award more than RotK. Lost in Translation was about two people who were isolated by being foreigners. No matter how welcome the locals made them feel, at the end of the day the protagonists would wind up at the bar lonely. Having been to Japan I could relate to how the characters felt. You may be welcomed with open arms in Japan, but to the Japanese you're still a gaijin.

RotK deserved a lot of the awards it received, but not best picture.

One good benefit for Americans is that this allows their employers to use that money elsewhere.

Where do you think that money will go? It will go into the pockets of the company executives and stock holders. The rank and file workers will get the pink slip.

I'm willing to bet that as far as possessions go, the average unemployed computer geek is significanlty better off than the Indian worker who "stole" his job.

Not necessarily. The cost of living in India is much much less than that in the US. If a programmer in India earns $11,000/yr they can get a nicely furnished apartment and have plenty of luxeries that your average Indian can't. Assuming that the median income in India of $480.00 is a livable wage, $11,000 would be a fortune. That's nearly 23 times more money per year.

Compare that with the median income in the US of around $36,000/yr. I don't know where you live, but 36k doesn't go very far in California. Just to put that into perspective, 23 times 36k is nearly 830,000/yr. If my assumption of $480/yr in India is correct, that's the difference between taking a bus to work and having a chauffer.

Basically I see the whole outsourcing phenomenon as contributing to the demise of the middle class. There will be more and more people, who are highly skilled and educated, having to take low paying jobs.

I've seen problems like that caused simply by loose screws in the chassis so check that all those are nice and tight first. If you're comfortable opening up the laptop and playing with it's innards just check the ribbon connection with the Mobo and make sure that the ribbon is inserted deep enough and that it's locked down properly. If that doesn't do it check the ribbon that connects to the LCD, it should be wrapped around the left hinge. If that looks good too I'd buy a replacement LCD on ebay.

I haven't seen this problem with IBMs that I can recall, but plenty of the Dell laptops I work on have LCD problems similar to yours.

I am suprised to see so many positive posting on Dell hardware/support. My company has a service contract with Dell and nearly all of our systems are Dell. I've had nothing but problems from Dell. Tech support, customer support, even my rep all cause me to run around in circles when I need something. I basically get stuck in transfer hell each time I place a call to Dell for anything.

One example is some replacement keyboards I need for my Asia users. I thought it would be realatively easy to get a replacement keyboard in Korean or Japanese for a Latitude but they don't sell foreign language keyboards in the U.S. Trying Dell Asia Pacific results in a response that "...because these systems were purchased in the U.S. you must contact the Dell spare parts dept in the U.S...." I've been hounding Dell for months on this with no resolution in sight.

My advice to anyone looking to buy a laptop stick with IBM or Apple. Dell makes inferior machines and the support is pretty poor.

If the military wants to continue to get fresh meat to enlist they have to promise the recruits an education that will translate to a job in the private sector when their service is up.
