    Lag issues man, 7-11's in japan can order stuff as much as they want, 7-11's in orbit only get sent stuff like every few months. With shopping a lot of shopping cycles the store could say have enough milk in stock to last 3 days checked daily such that even if the milk purchases double, and theres a delay in more milk, people wont notice.

    if you're brave you could remaster knoppix, I made a livecd thats supposed to start IceWM (couple tiny files need fixing)

    its 681179136 which ls -h on it says 650mb, its got some stuff I'd have to remove if I were to distrobute it as I have flash on it, and Ultima 7

    I'd link to the remastering howto on knoppix.net but thier wiki has been down so long the pages have been removed from google cache but theres a inwriting version of the howto on thier forums (too lazy to look)

    oh and dont forget (I almost did) The LiveCD List that was linked a month or so on slashdot

    A point that comes up on slashdot here and there, is where do you draw the line with linux? Whats really the "linux operating system"? kernel + coreutils isn't exactly a wholly useful setup. With windows its a bit more obvious, they give you a bunch of crap when you install it.

    I just want to see a definition of "Linux operating system" even if its something variable like "a window manager, a calculator, a web browser, a shell, a kernel etc" just to add some clarification to the whole thing

    But yea I agree with you that 6 cds is a "humungous distribution of non-essential software".

    Actually them posting about pre-alpha sourceforge projects would be acceptable, if they'd post about the ones nobody here could concieve, but pre-alpha for tunneling $NON_INTERNET_THING is kind of pointless.
    I say we make the submitter look through ALL of the pre-alpha sf projects and come back with the coolest idea, instead of something obvious.

    While the 486 laptop I'm playing on can "get by" it takes a minute to load any page in IE, on linux I haven't had good lucky finding small X display servers and web broswers but thats because I have linux on a 32mb flash card

    For browsing the internet,email etc I'd recommend a Pentium at 233mHz, but I'd say 100mhz minimum. I'd love to have a pentium 233 to play on tho.

    I don't know if I'd buy one of these for $1000...

    Personally I consider rewarding people for pirating 100 times worse than just pirating, because by purchasing pirate devices I am voting with my money saying that piracy is good.

    general idea here is that the patent office doesn't get enough money to actually check anything, because the money they collect goes into the general budget, at least thats what i've heard here. I'm safely ignorant in my igloo ;)

    pin compatible? CF has 50 tiny holes (female) while laptop ide is 44 small pins (male)
    I suspect he doesn't want a new HD because it'd be too new for it, at least thats the problem i'm running into but I've got a 486 laptop with 800mb thats starting to go...

    basically as you change the current (I) you have to change the resistance or the voltage changes...

    The universe is closed source, and theres been no problems, if it was open source I don't think we'd have as many hackers hacking on stuff, reverse engineering the cosmos.

    it's not just half the conversation, when I moved to richmond bc in 1997 there was a bunch of ESL kids in grade 7 with me, and it distracted the hell out of me when they spoke mandarin when I was workin on class work. Good thing they were understanding, probbly cos of all those english speaking peoples yapping while they're workin on stuff :)

    You can take back GPL software in a similar way that the freeware was taken away, you seem to have missed that. The GPL doesn't obligate authors to keep thier software available on the net, they can take down thier site, burn any printouts or cds containing the project and pretend it never happened. Only advantage here is that some Free software zealot named shift! on slashdot could host those projects on his website.

    Usually security is a balance of several steps, yes someone could sniff the sequence, but they can't sniff the password. A SSH worm probbly wont be smart enough to sniff sequences, so the port knocking would stop that :)

    I don't really know too much about VoIP, but what happens when the power goes out? Like I've only had 4 power outages in the last 10 or so years, but still, what if it happens? I know one advantage POTS has is that it usually works... Having VoIP for voice calls overseas is great, but what if the POTS system is gone, power is out, and people can't call for help?

    Course my telco has never really caused me grief so I'm not biased against them.

    oh sure use the magic DRM word which makes the whole idea seem EVIL

    Recalling the mail after read is too late of course, so logically you add the recall to the mailing daemon, if the mail has been read, no recall. Course theres a difference between mail in and mail out on linux, but might it work on windows or a mail system thats not sendmail+a pop3d?
