I can't wait for Blockbuster to go out of business. Their refusal to carry NC-17 movies (do they allow unrated) means studios have to chop movies down for the "public good". And they want six bucks for a movie rental. The thing is, I hate cable companies as much as I hate Blockbuster, so I'm SOL. I love Netflix, although they delay my movies because I turn them over too fast. I want a good guy to appear in this media blitz, bit I don't see it happening.
.. unlike Apple's iTunes Music Store, which offers music that is only compatible with Apple's iPod portable player, WMP 10 will work with songs from virtually any other online music store.
Anyone catch the flamebait? He's comparing a hardware device with a software application. iTunes plays pretty much anything, including Vorbis, with the proper quicktime plugin. Compare the software apps against each other all day, but don't BS designed to confuse and mislead people. Idiot.
Ready for this? Netflix buys no movies. They cut a deal with the studios for a share of the (still missing) profits. Netflix still can't turn a profit, and seeing as how they don't have to buy the movies, I wonder what kind of crack they dole out in those offices?
Howard doesn't call anyone - thats some guy named Captain Janks, and certaintly doesn't need this, he does just fine already.
Although the calls are funny - he actually provides a useful service to all of us - he shows how easy it is for a complete phoney to get through on the news. The media gets into such a major rush to be first on everything that they put him right on the air and give him the chance to say "Howard Stern's balls" or something like that. The scary part is, who's doing this and doesn't let in on the joke? We can never know for sure. Don't trust those people who call in during news broadcasts!
This reeks of advertising to me. This thing isn't even out yet, and while it seems to have cool features, you can't buy it so what's the point? Lets see a review when the thing finally comes out, not marketing driven "gossip".
Isn't it the same inside a car? It always surprises me how people drive like rude asses, then step out of their car and become normal friendly people again. I'm a nice guy on the road, but it's happened more than once that someone I recognize cuts me off or drives rudely around me - then they recognize me and their face changes. An ashamed smile adorns their face. Strange, I always wanted to see studies on that.
Maybe it's because a whole lot of us are too busy working on multi-million dollar financial projects to stop and tell you how cool it is? Java is all about the server side, so if we're not coding desktop apps, its because there's more appropriate software out there for that. That doesn't make Java uncool - there's a lot to be said about enterprise Java. Whether it's cool or not, it works.
By the way, I frequently use a very cool Java desktop app - It's an Amp/Effect editor from Line 6 that controls their Guitar and Bass Amps - It's all Java, looks and runs fantastic. Check it out if you have a Podxt.
Reminds me of the 60 minutes piece on stealth marketing a couple weeks ago. Basically, someone who approaches you on the street to take their picture could be marketing the camera. (in that case it was a camera phone). I really dislike the practice, it's dishonest. One of the interesting aspects is how they pay shills to post on message boards (hmm) and chat rooms. Usually they're easy to spot. How could Slashdot be any different, we're a wet dream to computer marketers. I do think that in the interest of the readers it would be best to post the story in a different section of sponsored articles. Then we would know, and I'm sure we would still check it out and discuss.
This is getting long winded, but I don't like the practice and wish it would stop.

Settle down guys, we're all just gonna copy them off Netflix anyways. (Did I just say that out loud?)
There's a lot of clothing being made in Los Angeles. In the area where I grew up every available space seems to be housing a garment maker. It's very, very low pay, they cheat the workers, etc. My friend worked for an agency that essentially crashed these places looking for abuses. They always found them. I guess the question is, what's the point? even by cheating workers they're still paying fifty times for for thw labor than they would in China. I think these are small-rrun operations, where they just can't wait for the turnaround time in getting them made in China.
There's a really nice tool on the net called startupcop that was made by the ZDNet people, released, then dropped. You can still find it on google as "startcop.zip". It's a nice program that shows you what starts in Windows when you boot. My friend had about 60 different adware/spyware programs on his machine. I was able to remove most of them except for this pesky TV something adware which would not uninstall. And something else, there's some other kind of app that won't let adaware or spybot run. Its a giant pain in the ass, my friends PC is unusable, eve with Mozilla, and he ahs a $50 a month broadband bill. The sons of bitches who make these programs need to be put in jail. There, now i feel better.
I use craigslist every day to buy and sell music stuff, and I sold my car thanks to craigslist. I have never been charged a penny, or needed an account. How does craigslist make money? They don't have ads. (other than the classifieds themselves) Last I heard craiglist was run by a bunch of volunteers. Could someone be pulling this reporter's leg?
I have bought quite a bit and sold a good amount of music equipment on ebay - amps, guitars, etc. Lately the music section in Los Angeles seems to have been run over by spammers who list stuff only to collect your email address. They have a great system for the seller to remain anonymous, but not for the buyer.
My other problem with craigslist is people who list things for ridiculous prices - Power Mac G4 500 with 256 MB Ram - only $1500!

Someone beat this dude with a clue stick. The PC is $599. I'd say that's a pretty reasonable price for any new PC. Plus it's got cute little mouse ear speakers! Ooh!
A combination of free and cheap software works much better than 321 Studios' software. DVD Shrink is free, easy to use, and never crashes. Nero can be had as cheap as $5 on the web. This combination is sweet, if you're using DVD-X-Copy or whatever you paid for inferior software.
I just installed xfce based only on your post, and thank you sir. It's beautiful. I installed it under Red Hat Professional Workstation, and it installed itself as a session option at login. Nice. Its much lighter than wither Gnome or KDE, and the catch is that it still runs all gnome apps (or kde), it just loads the libraries. I'm actually running WebSphere Studio, EditPlus under Wine, and VMWare running Windows 2000, all usable with 1 gig ram. Couldn't do that usably under gnome! Thanks for the post.
This is encouraging news, although I develop using WebSphere Studio under Linux, I'm not necessarily coding Linux, but WebSphere. It does make me ponder if I might be able to get a new better job in the future. Anyone know the fate of WebSphere developers?
