I agree. I didn't mean to suggest literally copying a work as one's own without proper attribution or payment. I just meant, in the general sense, to re-use available solutions when apropos to the task at hand, and economically viable.

LGPL, BSD, proprietary, doesn't matter to me, if it is cheaper than paying to (re)implement a solution, as long as it works.

  4. Real-world skills on Student Who Released Code From Assignments Accused of Cheating · · Score: 1

The irony is that, as a student, copying the work of others is unethical. Once one is a professional, billing for work done, a case could be made that NOT copying is unethical. E.g. billing for a custom implementation of an off-the-shelf solution doesn't seem right*.

The lesson from the fraternity story is that they start using the system that works in real life - who you know is often more important that what you know.

What do you gain by testing it when you don't have to?"... In a similar vein, I don't think anyone will go wrong in assuming an operating stove is hot.

Also along those lines, I saw a thing on a some cable channel show, where a saw blade would instantly stop when you put your finger into it. Again, I ask, why would you test that?

I have air bags in my car, I hope not to test them. I am not missing out on the technology of air bags, nor am I sticking my fingers into a "safe" saw blade.

one-time carbon-offset equivalent to preventing 44 billion tons of CO2 from entering the atmosphere.

That doesn't mean anything to most people. Is that a lot? Is it how much the average cow belches?

Here's about how much it is; 44 billion tons of C02 is about how much CO2 a modern coal-burning power plan turns out in 44 years. China is bringing a new coal-power plant online every week to 10 days.
So, IF we could paint all of the roofs in America white by, say 2012, we could reduce the global carbon footprint to 2010 levels (about).

Seems to me this is the type of thing no one ought to be compelled to do. If any laws are made about the issue, it should be no more than to grant the right to paint your roof white, without regard to homeowners rule, city zoning laws, etc.

Now you know, a white roof might save you money, knock yourself out. Leave me out of it.

  12. That's why you need a simpler tax system on The Great Ethanol Scam · · Score: 1

It will never happen in our lifetimes, but "taking money out of politics" is the right answer.

And, by "taking money out" I don't mean on the campaign contribution side -- it is on the tax raising side.
If the taxes were only raised in a behavior neutral way, there would be far less reason to bribe your favorite politician.

(Cost of Government) / (Number of Citizens) = the fair tax per citizen. Anything else is unfair, but necessary simply because not everyone can afford their fair share. All the shenanigans of modern tax code boils down to the politics of extracting unfair amounts of money from whomever can pay and the resultant politics of helping friends and punishing enemies.

So, in the US, with a $2.1 Trillion budget and 306 million citizens, if your family is not paying over $6,800 a head in federal taxes you are not paying your fair share. If you are not paying that much, you should thank some rich guy for helping you out. If that seems like too much, or you don't like being beholden to "some rich guy", maybe the government should spend less.

Of course, arguing the expenses is another story... if the government only did was it was constitutionally allowed to do, it would need a lot less money.

  13. Pick a different word, than racism on Google Earth Raises Discrimination Issue In Japan · · Score: 1

Saying someone is different because they are white or black or red or yellow ... makes no sense.

You are correct, and it probably happens less than you think. Personally, I suspect a lot of what is labeled "racism" is, in fact, nothing of the sort. It is more likely "culturalism".

Even from the summary; Because there is nothing physical to differentiate burakumin from other Japanese and because there are no clues in their names or accent, the only way of establishing whether or not they are burakumin is by tracing their family. You don't have to have a difference in races to have people hate you. Look at high school cliques. Look at "grown-up" politics? Hate Obama because he is black? Hate Rush Limbaugh because he is White? No, you probably don't like the politics of one or the other.

There are plenty of people, of any race, that have cultural differences enough to make others uncomfortable with them, race being only coincidental.

Discrimination based on race? That's stupid. Discrimination based on culture? Damn right, some cultures suck!
