The resulting traffic generated from clicking on that 'featured logo' incapacitated the servers of the top-listed images, hosted at an Australian university. This more than inconvenienced the owners of that site, who had to move pages and ended up displaying this page instead."
I recently bought an iBook myself. It came in the mail on Tuesday, and lo and behold, it died before the day was out. To say I was a bit upset would be an understatement. Being my first step into the Mac world, I was impressed by OS X, but being hit by an issue that has been known about for months(and is still apparently a problem) has left a bad taste in my mouth.
What I want to know, though, is since Apple should have a fairly good idea of the models affected, now, why they can't simply flush these boards out of their system to prevent future problems?
Actually, I already have a low-end iBook. It's basically my entry into the Mac arena(love it so far...OS X is great), and I want to get used to the Mac World before I go all out with the G5.:-)
Personally I'm tired of trying to keep up with the gHz war between AMD and Intel. With our current technology, the only areas really pushing processing speeds are gaming and video/image applications(that I'm aware of). My grandmother doesn't need a P5 4gHz to check her email, and neither do I if I simply want to write a paper.
He registered the domain in August because he thought it would be cool to have a site that sounded like the famous company to show his Web designing skills.
Well, that's exactly what a trademark is supposed to protect against; someone else using your brand-name for their own purposes. And because the way the trademark law works, Microsoft has to defend their trademarks; writing letters, suing; or else they risk the trademark being generic; free for anyone to use.
He says differently on his site, however.

That both GTA3's made the list, coming in at 10th and 15th, no less.
One thing I did notice, is that the majority of the list is fairly recent. I'm quite disappointed that neither Thief or the original System Shock made the list, however...
This story seems kinda shifty to me...better go read the article...:-)
I must be a youngster, since this is the first time I've heard of the magazine. Any long time subscribers wanna fill me in?
This a good point. Why do you need a graphical startup screen? Sure it may look nice, but it adds no functionality at all to the boot process. We already have to deal with those annoying startup logos(Dell, Compaq, etc.), and I can't help but think that this would be used in much the same way.
I like Linux as much as anybody, but the only games I play on it are Solitaire and xBill. Yes, there are some games for it, but your examples say alot. Linux isn't going to be a gaming platform until A) the market for it is there and then B) companies (like Bioware, who is making a Linux port of Neverwinter Nights) start making the games natively. I have Transgaming's emulator, and while it's great on the games it supports fully, those (or at least the games I own) are few and far between. I'm not sure if Linux will ever be a good choice for gamers - if it does it is still a few years down the road.
Microsoft acquiring Flash would be bad enough, but having them get ahold of Dreamweaver would be even worse. It's a far superior product to Frontpage, but if good ol' Bill were to get his hands on it, I'm sure it would either be disregarded or simplified/downgraded to the point where it's nothing more than a Frontpage clone.
This is bad. Very. bad.
...the original System Shock? It was far ahead of it's time, both technologically and as far as fun/fear factor. Just giving credit where credit is due.

And I'm sure he called for lots of backup and confiscated your car, too, right? The problem is not that the law was broken; the problem is that the tactics used were those akin to what would be used against a terrorist, when in reality the suspect was nothing more that a petty thief.

people are too lazy to walk. On a more serious note however, I would never, ever own one of these things, even if they were to become something of a fad. Why? Because of the simple fact that God gave me two legs to move around. I could see certain applications where a Segway might be handy, but on the hold it is just as the article decription states - an overhyped, overprice toy.

Who are you and what ahve you done with CowboyNeal?:-)
Like many other Slashdotters, I'm chained to Microsoft because of games. I'm tried on several occassions to kick the habbit, but that usually lasts all of a week before an urge to play GTA3 or Neverwinter Nights has me looking for my copy of Windows XP. Also, now that I'm in college, several of my programming classes require Windows 2k or better. Of course, I did get a couple of smirks from the faculty when I pointed out that considered any version of Linux to fall in that category....;-)

I wouldn't put it past SCO writing the virus themselves just so that they COULD have some PR ammo against the OSS community.
I'll just wait a while and then click on the "Buy It Used" button.
:-)
Last time I checked, Bush was still in office, so you will have to wait awhile, it seems.

...since my next computer is going to house a G5.

I think I just decided to buy a Mac.
