I never had many problems with Morrowing as far as bugs go on the PC. It could have used a more interesting combat system (it was rather bland and boring) and the overpowered alchemy system was a loophole into leveling up and getting rich *very* fast.

But it was still a great game with a huge, detailed world; dozens and dozens of quests; a great variety of weapons and armor, the ability to create your own custom spells and the music and sound wasnt too shabby either.

Oh, and it had the full game editor included so you could mod things as you please (it was actually rather simple to use for the most part) Never saw any huge, awesome mods as I had hoped for; but some neat things came out of it.

it would be, except....then instead of convincing people to try a new OS thats different....you have to convince them to read a book *and* try a new OS thats different.

If theyre too lazy to learn how to click buttons that only look different, how the hell do you expect to get them to read something? Linux will take off a bit better when you don't need a book to use it.

As it is a new drive may need mounting, people will need to know what root is, *why* root is, and why they shouldnt use it all the time, and they'll damn sure want to know why numerous programs cant be downloaded and clicked on to install them.

Some people arent open-minded enough to try something new, some people just dont have the time to learn how to use a very different operating system , whatever the bonuses, because they have a life and want things to just WORK.

Example? I installed Knoppix on my brothers pc, his windows copy was pirated and kept messing up. When it installs, it installs symlinks on the dekstop to the optical drives which, eventually but *randomly* fail. After checking in 2 or 3 forums I still havent had a clear explanation of how to fucking get them to work properly; and its the kind of thing youd expect knoppix of all distros to do so you wouldnt have to mess with it.

But I do have to mess with it, nothing I try has worked, and I hope to hell someone and the knoppix forums has a better answer tonight than they did last night; cause as much as I prefer linux...this is a total waste of time.

    Much easier indeed.

I finally convinced my brother to use Linux, since he had pirated a copy of windows and he couldnt get it to work right; i argued that for free he should at least *try* Linux before paying for windows. He said ok, and I installed Knoppix.

Knoppix: because the hardware detection was perfect, and its debian-based to keeping him up-to-date will be simple. Lets see what I have to do to get it in order for him: Install Nvidia drivers, a touch annoying for an average windows user, but its easy even if youre not.

Install a browser...oh its here...email...gaim...office apps...sound and music apps....wow its all here already. DVD?

Oh, just install Libdvdcss....some an average windows user wouldnt know a thing about, or where to get it...or how to install a .deb file since you cant just click it and go. Hmmm.

WEll, its out of the way, now to watch a DVD...la di da. Oh, I have to go mow the grass...

Ah, now to start up Xine again and finish my movie...oh whats this? For no good reason, my DVD drive doesnt work. It cant find the DVD drive. Wait a minute....now it cant find the cd-rom either; I didnt change anything...

I know very little about linux, but I know my drives shouldnt randomly stop working. As many things as Ive seen go wrong in windows....you can pretty well just reboot and magically it works again. As of this moment, my brothers computer doesnt have a DVD drive or CDROM he can use. Great.

How about MAndrake? How about i downloaded mandrake 10 3 times to 3 different sets of cds and got an error each time? How about Mandrake 9.1 installed fine but couldnt get the network working (the first time ive encountered such a thing with mandrake, which is why i installed knoppix afterwards) Ok, well, Ill just get some other things working....install Java, Flash, and edit the sources.list to comment out servers that it cant reach (all things a new user could *never* do, while they CAN use google to get anything they want, download it and just click click click to install it) This post is far too long now that I think of it; Windows is just easier right now. Oh sure it has its drawbacks and problems, but for just using it....its much easier. Nobody cares how safe and secure Linux is if they cant fucking figure out how to get anything to work on it. And Id almost guarantee none of them could.

Youre missing the point; or rather, perhaps i didnt explain my mother well enough. If somethings different, she'll notice and give hell over it - but perhaps ill give some of those things a try if ever the chance comes up.

thing is, *I* know how easy linux as a desktop can be now if you dont have obscure hardware to cause you problems.

And I also know what games I like, and what I dont...most games for Linux I dont like, im a serious gamer, yes Ive played a handful of games on linux that i like, but ive played *all* the games I like on windows, without wondering if its worth getting WineX going to play it. Dont try to pass Linux off as a serious gamers platform, its not, and thats fine....but I play a number of games, and a number of them dont have linux versions. You know better than that.

In fact, I used to dual boot between linux (i used mandrake 9, debian 3.0 and acouple others) But got tired of rebooting to play a game that was simply windows only. Im sure Linux will have enough games for me in the future, in fact, Im hoping that it will have enough in a couple of years that Linux will be the only OS on my system...and my wife (who, again, is resistant to change) will have to get over it or buy her own pc.

  23. Re:If they're charging more for Windoze on Microsoft Blames Anti-trust Legal Fees for Price Increases · · Score: 4, Interesting
except that a huge number of people dont pay for windows separately; they get it packaged...or pirate it. in either case, the total cost of windows is zero the the end user.

If the cost keeps going up, no matter the reason, so will piracy of the product. Wed like to think more people would try linux, but they wont. My brother pirates windows; ive hadned him linux demos and despite only listening to mp3s and surfing the web hed rather pirate the windows he knows; then get a free operating system he DOESNT know; that may or may not work with all his hardware.

In fact, he reccomended to my mother the other day she try linux, she won't and its not because of the price. She "doesnt want to learn anything new"

Shed rather live with constant viruses with Windows and Outlook and problems with Internet Explorer than even try Thunderbird or Firefox and "learn something new" despite ALL the buttons are pretty clearly labeled, and you have to be just plain lazy to use that as an excuse. I even offered to switch all her contacts and bookmarks over, and get her junk mail filtereing started (something Outlook doesnt have) so she could email in peace...still no.

As much as Id love to see linux mature and be better for everyday everybody use; I think its going to take that and then some to get people to actually use it once its ready.

Personally, I think it sucks. Id prefer linux myself, except Im a gamer...and tuxracer isnt what Im looking for.
