seriously. i installed it on an old, old athlon xp 1700+ box and the install went fine
now, i couldnt use it, because...well it turns out none of the hardware had vista/7 drivers. id been running linux on the box so long that i pretty much forgot about needing to find drivers for things *shrug*
meh, i had a Thinkpad for a couple years and i really, really miss the trackpoint. id damn near kill to have one in the middle of my wireless logitech keyboard. i found a few that were wired (ps/2? no fucking thanks, bud) and overpriced. half the time when i was on my thinkpad, even if i had a mouse handy, id just use the trackpoint. its such a wonderful input device and one of the main reasons i went with thinkpads. i *hate* touchpads, the multitouch ones are ok but nothing compared to a trackpoint for me.
some of you guys need to find a tech forum to call home. to me, these kinds of questions always seem out of place on the front page here. places like arstechnica or anandtech have good forums with tech users and sub forums for information on various technology, hardware, peripherals, networking and general OS help.
another vote for TIE Fighter, or X vs T. I played the bejesus out of TIE Fighter, X wing was good, but broadband wasnt quite available enough for me to enjoy X vs T
I dont have a copy of any of those anymore, but Id gladly buy them if they got a revamp and were available as a set for a decent price
i just got a work-study job with the campus adming at the community college i attend. hes been there almost a decade and has no network monitoring system, so he has no idea when something goes down until he gets a complaint or cant get something to work himself. i thought an interesting project during my time with him might be to see if hed let me help implement a network monitoring system, and ive seen a couple of people use The Dude before and it seems pretty capable.
im going with this. if hes not hurting anyone and hes not a leech, leave him alone and go enjoy your own life. hes going to have to hit rock bottom to really care enough to make any kind of change, anything you do will likely just make him resent you.
jeebus, when i worked for a wisp with a crappy backbone, we didnt cap. we used QoS to keep torrents at the bottom of the priority list, but that was it.
i was actually surprised that was all they did...but they considered bandwidth cheap, we had a couple of t1s here and there, but mostly we just used regular dsl lines.
I dont remember the first distro i tried, but it was 1997 or 1998. I did the install over my windows install and...when i realized it was ugly, going to be a bitch to do anything, and i couldnt get a dial up connection working easily, i reinstalled windows.
I started using debian for toying around with 3 or 4 years ago or so, and I use ubuntu on the desktop for the last 2 years now. I way, way prefer linux over windows, primarily due to software management and interface options.
... notes that 'Linus Torvalds, a Finn, comments his code in English (it apparently never occurred to him to do otherwise).
I thought I had read/heard somewhere (might have even been the documentary Revolution OS) that Finns & Swedes grow up with English Sesame Street available to them and as a result many of them are bilingual from a young age.
I went out with a swedish chick a few times. They have several years of english classes in school (I cant remember if its 6, or 8). She spoke good english, not perfect, but very good. Her grammar was decent and the only thing I remember her making mistakes on were homonyms.
i care about the software on my computer, and avoid non-free stuff as best as i practically can...but theres no way in hell i want to deal with notices and options from all the java stuff on every site i visit.
i already block what i can get away with via noscript and even thats a hassle sometimes, trying to deal with even what i unblock, in regards to licensing, would drive me nuts.
totally off topic, but I met Anand recently in Raleigh (Ive been a reader of the site for years, and a regular in the forums as well) and hes a very smart guy, quite nice, as well as interesting. The articles they do are usually pretty lengthy, and in-depth enough that I rarely bother to read the whole thing.
Turns out that as popular as his forums are, a few large companies actually have people on payroll just to read the forums and collect feedback (lots of tech enthusiasts there, especially concerning video cards and CPU overclocking)
fwiw, you can *use* picasa on linux. google offers a standalone package for the installation. i use GNOME so i went with picasa instead of digikam a while back, since it offers all I need for basic retouching and effects.
This isnt news, really. I snagged Crossover Office last year when it was free and installed Office 2007 so I wouldnt have to load a VM to use it. Unfortunately, as a student, a few of my assignments require 2007, and Id rather run it on my laptop than stick around school doing work.
is that also the saying you guys use when some bud says he has nekkid pictures of your mom? :P
Im a student at a community college and Ive seen at least half a dozen people with netbooks (Ive got an eee 1000h)

what we really need to do is put the fetusii (har har) in a fake womb, like a glass jar or tube of some sort and...
