    Cheaper parts? He spent more then he would have for a Tivo. Now putting a PVR together from old computer parts and open source software would be interesting. Could you run one of these things on a 122MHz CPU?

    I remember how angry a lot of us Apple II owners were at Apple because of the closed design of the Mac. The Apple II was great, I had a book that mapped every byte in that baby. The Mac was more of a sealed box.

    In many ways the Mac started the decline of Apple and the rise of the PC and M$, at least from a hackers POV.

    The last thing we need is for big government to get involved (in the US anyway). I would much rather keep my freedoms and deal with the spam then get the fed involved.

    If by most people you mean a few thousand geeks world wide then I would agree. How many people want to be able to mess around with the source code? How many have the time or inclanation to understand the internals of the OS?

    Sorry, but how does a heavy chunck of plutonium remove the need for a rocket? I am not sure how an RTG could get you off the earth.

    Also I think there are problems with nuclear solutions other then just fear. Don't under play the risks, plutoniun can be highly toxic. Wastes have to be dealt with even in space.

    Maybe cellphones are playing today? I would have loved to have one as a kid, better then walkie-talkies or two dixie cups on a string. People stop doing things in most cases because better options come along.

    I got one from Amazon just before Christmas. The order went to Toys backwards R Us. They are still listed on Amazon, not sure if they have any in stock.

    I used to do this years ago (pre digital days). I would trigger the shot with a line climber, which is a small winged device that hooks onto the kite line and gets blown up it.

    This type photograhy works a lot better with at least 2 people, especialy when its time to get the kite and camera down.

    A sled or cody kite gives a nice steady base to work from. Sleds are cheap and easy to make, but a bit difficult to rig an attachment point for the camera to. I do NOT recomend a flowform or paraform kite. They tend to collapse and drop to the ground.

    This is a great point. I would love to have access to older movies and TV shows on-line. No way they should/could sell these at $17 a clip, but at $5 or under I would give them my business.

    Its the older "classics" like Starwars or City Lights that would pose a problem. Too good to sell cheap, to old to sell dear.

    Sure its nice to get some big companies involved and let them pump resources into Linux and sure its nice to be able to use Linux at work. But even if no companies adopt Linux it will still be a great OS and I will still use it at home. Linux is not a commercial product, there are not sales figures to be met, except at places like RH.

    Linux is not a small hobbit doing battle against MS and SCO, the two towers. This should not seem like a us against them battle at all.
