Suppose you helped develop Adobe Premier Pro, and are dependant on its sales to feed your family. Do you really want someone in Taiwan running a server off which people can download it for free?
These people may not buy it anyway. So? I don't go steal a Lexus just because I can't afford it/don't want to spend the money on it.
Music piracy is a bit tougher, though, because there are already so many mediums on which to get free music, like radio. Just giving the other side for a change.
Until pressing a button is as secure as writing (or punching) your vote on paper and dropping it in to a box, e-voting won't be mainstream. You can't hook up a wire to a box to change all the votes inside can you?
Well actually it is capitalism, it's just not competition. Its more that they have a monopoly on the market, and they can charge whatever price gives them the greatest return. Would you rather sell 10 units at 50% profit each or 1000 units at 5% profit each? You make more profit with the latter. Monopolies dont "just overcharge" because they can, they operate at their maximum cost/benefit ratio. Its high school economics. And now, some definitions.
Capitalism: An economic system in which the means of production and distribution are privately or corporately owned and development is proportionate to the accumulation and reinvestment of profits gained in a free market.
Monopoly: Exclusive control by one group of the means of producing or selling a commodity or service.
(does the RIAA have total control of all records? No. There is still independant labels that dont work under them, and there are ways around it. Once the RIAA's profit lowers, they will lower or raise the price of their albums to go back to equilibruim.)
The real problem is the 48 year old baby boomer mothers who have to go buy the next Brittney album for their 13 year old daughter. They will buy any CD no matter the price. That is what is keeping the RIAA alive right now. Too bad there isnt a/. media anti-RIAA campaign.
If one gets the same product to me cheaper, I don't care what their logo is. Right now I'm sticking with AMD but if Intel can give me the same as AMD for less money I'll switch over in an instant.
It claims that because programmers do it for free, it is losing out on income tax and that commercial software companies (read Microsoft) are at a disadvantage.
Isn't that the whole POINT of open source?!
To be able to compete with huge corporations you must be
1. Affordable (free is good)
2. Customizable (anyone can edit it)
3. Better than the product you are competing with (any arguement there?)
This is a case of too many lobbyists and not enough people with the rocks to go against them.
"Duke University researchers say the implications are profound for humans and the future of learning."
The problem isn't with intelligence. Its a problem with the school systems. I am in high school right now and I'm amazed how dumbed down even my Calculus class is. What was grade school level 10 years ago is High school and college level today. We need to tighten the standards and make classes more challenging. There is a huge population of "smart" students but 90% of them just get by by taking the easiert classes possible. Half of my classes I don't even know why I show up.
On my mom's PC, I always make sure that she has Firefox or some other browser without ActiveX (where most spyware and the such comes from), install flash, shockwave, and java plugins, and keep a good virus scan going at all times (I use PC-Cillin but norton works well also).
The best way to have good security on your parents' computers is to educate them (whos the parent now?!) on e-mail attachments and what to do in case of a popup. My mom freaked out when she got her first "natural male enhancement" spam but it showed her why not to enter your e-mail whenever it says "enter your e-mail" on a web site.
1. The person must be able to select the name of the person they want to vote for. (check)
2. Now count which person received the most votes. (check)
3. Announce a winner. (check)
4. Make sure that no person voted twice.
5. Make sure that everyone that voted is registered
6. Make it impervious to hackers yet easily usable by your 95-year-old grandmother.
7. Make it error-proof and virus-proof (tell me when you create the new OS it will need).

I would do a reformat before I upgraded to Wife 1.0!
There is no dart.
score for geeks and simpsons characters, but theres no way that movie will ever score with the public.
When I saw the preview in the theater nearly everyone looked at each other in shock and amusement. Some things just don't make good movies.
I think so Brain, but what do fjords in canada and scantily clad women have to do with the food suppliment?

How exactly can you be out of stock when they are not even IN stock yet?
Now I can have a purpose for waving my hands in the air for no apparent reason!
And they said I was mad....
Appropriate considering Dr. Seuss would turn 100 today if he were still alive.

Now we are going to have to submit to random searches before voting?
