Thanks, but it still doesn't adequately answer why they chose their advertising firm's offices.. London real estate is too costly for this decision to be simply casual as it implies!
That's an interesting question. Do we know how such repair cases exist? A class action presupposes a large number of people and that's one bit of data one would need.
I know this is/. and MS bashing is de rigeur, but let that not detract from the fact that what Bill Gates is doing is admirable to say the least.
Why is it admirable? It's not that he is rich and has a lot of money etc. It's the fact that he's getting into global developmental issues and spending a majority time working on that than on IT. I live in India and I've seen the positive work that his foundation is doing in HIV prevention. Also on a personal front, he's moving away from IT where he has leadership position to an area where he is new. Yes we know that money can buy you leverage but then you could argue that way with anything he does..
He could have just retired to the carribean, bought out an island and enjoyed his wealth. But he didn't and so let's give him a cheer just for that.
Porn is a high margin business, and as long as there are adequate safeguards and above the law, it's ethical.
The moralists may object, but when they see how common phone services like voice, data are cheaper because of the porn revenue stream, they should come on the telco's side.
Of course it will help if the telecom peddles the porn under a different brand name...
Interestingly, the article mentions BRIC countries. The BRIC http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BRIC is a set of coutries poised for great economic growth this century.
So it's obviously a set of countries that Linux should be in..
Going by past record, =aAnything that virgin announces has to be tempered with a dose of reality. The fact is that Branson is a master in using PR publicity as marketing. In fact he has been often quoted in interviews saying that a headline and a newsworthy article is worth more than ad dollars (and he's right).
Virgin Galactic is a good long term indea. It also makes for great news. Right now he has had "agreements" with launch sites. Let's see how much money he puts on the table, let's see some test flights and then we can judge.
Last month, I was on my way to visit a friend. It was dark and I got lost, and I tried to find his address in my computer. His coordinates were included in the e-mail he sent me that day. Unluckily for me, that e-mail message was sent to my GMail account, and, being disconnected from the Internet, I was left with quite a negative experience. In one split second, all the benefits of zero-install, a cool UI, labels, free targeted advertisements, an extremely useful search engine, and platform independence were annihilated when I could not find my friend's address because I was out of range of a Wi-Fi hotspot.
No - you couldn't find your address because you were stupid enough not to jot it down on a piece of paper when you had the chance. Seriously, blaming GMail for not being able to access data locally is asking a bit too much of the Internet, le talone of Ajax!
Since the original flick, all the nerds are now in India! What the producers should do is shift base from Emory to an Indian university. Perhaps one of the IITs (www.iitb.ac.in)!
Obviously there are two level of biases here - a. restriction to certain domains b. restriction to certain keywords.
To a user it can be useful: it allows for a focused search. Say you're an industrial engineer and want to constrain your search to a topic. But what's critical to the credibility of google is a way for the user to *know* the biases before using the engine!
I keep a 1GB stick on my keychain which is enough for almost anything.
Famous last words. Remember the days - not too long ago - when a floppy drive was "enough".
The truth is that with video capture devices becoming cheap, and consumer generated content and sharing fast becoming a social trend, I'm sure you'll hear about a 16GB personal drive being not "enough" pretty soon!
When books starting coming out in paperbacks instead of hardbound, I'm sure the exact same question was asked: will reading books - horror! - ruin marriages.
Frankly, I think NYtimes is running out of stories...
As devices get smaller and wirefree, it's an inevitability. Today it's acceptable to get magazines and books to bed, tomorrow it will be electronic devices.
As long as there is a lifestyle divide between suburban life and inner city life, suburbans will always aspire to be part of the 'city'. Not all can. For those who can't urban theme games will work. The problem is not the idea, it's how it's been executed ad nauseum...
I completely agree with the above. If this is like Puzzle Pirates, it will do well.
There is a huge audience of casual gamers (with a significant proportion of women) who are under-targeted. Puzzle Pirates is a masterpiece of a mmorpg simply because it expanded the genre. The fact is that while you're 'puzzling', you're not thinking about your character role or the world so it appeals to the 'less hardcore gamers'. In a way, the created world is merely a context for casual gaming...
The great thing to come out of increased retail competition, is that advertising budgets are increasingly being diverted into retail communication.
No you may ask why is this better for consumers: the reason is that the closer the consumer gets to the point of purchase, the more rational are her communication needs. It's not so much about image or coolness, it's also about "so what does the expansion port look like, and, can I hook this to my laptop etc".
For calling off so-called game movies is a bit reckless.
Two points:
1. You will theorise as to the reasons why it doesn't work *until* there comes a "game movie" that's truly great. And then you will revise your theories..
2. The gaming media and cinema are new art forms, especially compared to other arts like painting or literature or music. To write any one of them off is premature not to mention an attempted fusion of the two.
I think instead of blasting the combination of the two, the important question to ask is this:is the cinema making effort honest, or is it mainly dictated by a 'marketing extension of a brand'? Which is not to say, that a sincere film about a game need necessarily turn out to be bad...
By positioning the 3g phone as a high speed modem, blackberry is doing something very significant: it is saying that the best thing about 3g is not that you can watch movies or do video calling on a phone screen , it's the sheer access to bandwidth wherever and whenever you want.:)

Why else would the team be situated at AMV-BBDO
Where is the project based? Our digs are at AMV-BBDO, The Economist's ad agency, on Marylebone Road in London. Take a look at our web cam.
And Ad agencies (I've worked in one) are usually credited for such poor ideas..
The Fed had better act quickly.
Also, how many of your classmates want a job as tech support for Dell?

Now that will be real and oh so funny
To a user it can be useful: it allows for a focused search. Say you're an industrial engineer and want to constrain your search to a topic. But what's critical to the credibility of google is a way for the user to *know* the biases before using the engine!
I says they are designing chips, not making them! The cost of designing chips is the cost of designers alone.
A large market cap also allows for larger and more sophisticated legal counsel! So I guess it evens out...
Maryland should just outsource it to India! http://www.eci.gov.in/EVM/index.htm

Isn't there already a word invented to describe this situation?

Abosulutely bang on! Any mobile phone service from the US sounds a bit primitive. Even the list of phone models mentioned is so limited....
