I think that the difference is in the way the hardware handles this. IANAE on this but it looks like vertex data is never being stored in main memory, but is "streamed" to the GPU via the processors. The main memory only gets a description of the object to be rendered instead of the whole object. This reduces the bandwidth overhead and frees up more room for object descriptions.
So basically instead of 10 trees rendered 40 times a piece we may get 40 trees rendered 10 times. This should make a huge difference in any scene that has hundreds of similar objects.
I think the point is that they don't need to make the apps themselves. Paypal/Ebay did the development. This just enhances there service.
What if Jeopardy did one that allowed you to play along at home somehow? or they made an instant blog module where you could populate a blog entry with a screen shot and information about the show your watching.
This could be a great thing for advertisers imagine being able to have a buy it now logo pop up during your comercial. But I guess if you are watching on a Tivo you wouldn't see the commercial.
Basically a USB hard-drive that auto configs ssh and your browser so novice users can access proxyies.
A very cool idea but only "secure" if you trust the company. They say they don't keep logs, but you never know. Also a yearly fee with a limit on transfer.

This guy seems a little harsh and just a bit jealous of the success of Gordon Cormack's article. I'd like to know what makes his opinion any more valid than Gordon's.
Information on his professional career was very hard to find on the site.
This just seems like a flame because his software(dspam) didn't perform well in the test.
I don't know how effective the sony method would be. It seems like a dedicated person could filter the IR. I know that they do this in astronomy when using a CCD to look at stars and in high end photography:
I loved programming this for the TI-81. Passed so many wonderful hours in Math class programming upgrades for it. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.
How is Java not marketed towards Programmers? This isn't ment to be a flame I just wonder how a non programmer could quickly learn java and the OO premises it operates on.
I graduated in March 02 from getting a technical degree in Java Programming(along with a few certs) and was in a very similar situation that you were. I finally had a brain storm and started sending in resumes to jobs in marketing departments that had internet marketing groups. I positioned myself as the guy who interface between tech needs and business needs. It's worked out great so far.
I've been keeping my programming skills sharp by freelancing when available and working on interesting projects for my website. In another 6 months I'll start looking for a programming job again but now I'll have 2 years experiance managing people, working out budgets, working on business strategy and an established protfolio of freelance work.
This approach probably isn't for everyone but for it's made this recession bearable.
They mention that all standard python libraries should work.

Dreamcast failed for many reasons that could have been easily avoided. One of the largest being pirating of games which the PS2 had no impact on.
