I've been an admin of 12 ESX servers for 2 years now. I would say this a very good move for the market as frankly VMware, namely ESX, has been sitting stagnet for some time, something that Microsoft is normally called out for. I'm hoping that the battle to one-up their competitor results in some accelerated innovation in this market.

The new VS2005 R2 has some very interesting features such as iSCSI and 64 bit support. VMware can start making rapid updates to Server to compete and roll up the good stuffs into ESX for the datacenter workhorses.

    Followed by:

5/23 - Crash, Lord of War, The Punisher, Saw, Terminator 2: Judgment Day
    5/23 - The Last Waltz
5/23 - 50 First Dates, The Fifth Element, Hitch, House of Flying Daggers, A Knight's Tale, Resident Evil: Apocalypse, xXx

It's actually a little bit more muddy than that. Smed was part of Sony Interactive Studios America (SISA) which made games for Sony. He hired Brad to help make EQ. A couple years later SOE was formed and SISA was renamed 989 Studios. This was around 95-96.

Around '98 was spun off and focused on makeing PSOne games. They changed their named to Verant Interactive and EQ was released '99. In 2000, SOE bought back Verant and merged it with SOE.

So, for most of the time EQ was being funded by Sony but they had no clue to its potential and then paid to get back what they once had.

Regardless, the money spent on a movie is sunk into Hollywood. That $122 million for The Island greased a lot of pockets, both of the studio and the sub companies that are tied to them (from food, wardrobe, lighting, effects, etc). More so that the $14M for BBM.
