HL2 doesn't require a DX9 card. It will run on DX6 hardware. Deus Ex: Invisible War is the first title to require a hardware upgrade. All hardware must be DX8 compliant and must support Pixel Shaders 1.0. Doom III... I don't know about Doom III but I think that Id should just stick with OGL instead of D3D.
Holographic overlay on the road in front of you perhaps? I think this technology is really cool. It can be extremely profitable for ad organizations because now they can reach multiple target audiences in a single day rather than just one. However, this, as well as most other technology, will probably be fairly insecure and we will most likely end up seeing blatantly rediculous messages while driving down the street or walking in a big city.
You're going to be running applications on an unstable kernel. So why do this anyway? It would be better to run windows on the linux kernel instead of vice versa.
Well if it requires certain codes to access it, then why doesn't someone start a project to brute force these things and then make the codes available when they are found?
I live in a small city and the lights from the city alone are too much to obscure the beautiful view of the night sky. I certainly do not want to see Pepsi, Apple, or Microsoft ads when I go to gaze at the stars.
The Blue Man Group is awesome!!!! How dare you! They are the only group I know that will actually make everyone in the audience not just participate but what to participate in their performances. -.-
Oh and we all love the Intel jingle. "Intel inside. Idiot outside."
replacing actors with automatons? if i wanted to see something computer generated and not performed by real people i would not go to a theatre (performance), i would go to a theater (movies).
to make, but the price of an IBM chip, retail or wholesale is a lot more expensive than an AMD chip. moreover, the power consumption and heat of an AMD cheap isn't that significant of a factor when compared to an IBM chip.
If microsoft is so concerned about the cost of the xbox why is it going with such high priced companies. I think ATi is a good choice for the video end because of the quality of the chips, but using the overpriced IBM processors is not very smart. If they wanted to keep the cost low they should have used AMD chips, then they could also afford to throw in a decent sized harddrive as well. AMD chips perform almost on par with the IBM equivilant and are better for gaming than the IBM chips so why not use them?
Am I the only one that thinks that Enterprise is the worst series ever? I mean it doesn't even bear the Star Trek name in the title. It is just called Enterprise. Moreover, it has horrible inconsistencies. They encountered the Ferengi, the Borg, post-evolution Klingons, etc. etc. I would not be surprised if they somehow ran into DS-9 in that show. The only episode that was really good was the pilot then it went downhill from there. The show should not have even lasted one season. I for one do not mind it being cancelled.
I disagree. That is a perfect analogy. However, what constantly bothers me is that everytime there is a new technlogy released the corporations damn it and try to make it illegal. They did the same thing with magnetic media (tapes, vcr's, etc.). Perhaps it is time that they learn that with this technology their business is getting more exposure and people will still purchase the product as long as they deem it good.
I can't wait until I can interface with my computer like in Tom Clancy's Net Force and my senses will also interface with it. It will be like the holodeck except for I can be dormant. Me wants:)
All the issues discribed in the article are expected when implementing a new technology. Of course there will be bugs in the protocol code and of course there will be hardware issues. It's like saying hey when we implemented IPv4 we had no problems whatsoever. Moreover, Windows XP was perfect out of the box (lol) and there isn't a single application on Linux that has a problem. Point is this new technology means new bugs. So it will be worse in the first stretch but for the rest of the run it is benificial.
What does it really matter if we can do nothing to stop it. The Earth periodically warms up or cools down so what are we to do about it. All I know is that I want some snow, I mean it's the middle of winter and we haven't gotten a good snow yet.
The new security features are only put into large bills such as $20, $50, and $100. They are not put into $1 bills. So you can reproduce the US dollar as much as you want, just don't go reproducing the large bills, because you'll have to build your own equipment for that, and well it's hard.
I thought about that as well and agree with you. However, I do not come from a rich family either and yet I am doing my best to get the hell out of it.
As much as I hate to say it, the most crime or any other illegal act I have seen committed was by a black person. I am unsure why this is nor am I enticed to find out. However, I am quite weary when I'm on the west side of town. I mean for new years they shoot guns and almost killed a co-workers son while he was in his room watching TV.:(
A lot of people have said that I was addicted to caffeine. However, I have stopped intaking caffeine for weeks before with no problem. Moreover, caffeine has only the effect I desire it to have. If I wish I can have it make me more alert or put me to sleep. Yes, I can understand it sounds strange but, I figure drinking 11 bottles of Bawls in the duration of just a few hours then going to sleep is proof of something. Drinking a 12 pack of Mountain Dew at LANs and staying up all night or just drinking just a few bottles of Bawls and staying up for two days. I dunno, I guess I'm weird. It's either I can control the way my body processes the chemical or it just simply doesn't have the same affect it does on other people. Ramble ramble ramble...
So to answer your question... become immune!!!
Games that can not run natively using opengl are obviously not going to run in opengl unless you use a wrapper. However, run UT2k3 in OpenGL and run it in D3D. You will see a massive performance increase running it in OpenGL, especially on those damn new nVidia cards (why oh why did I ever switch from ATi). Run Half-Life in D3D then run it in OGL. Run any game that allows both rendering options and you will see that OGL runs faster.
which is precisley why all 3d applications have in the past and currently run much faster in opengl on my systems than in direct3d. opengl does not have as much to render. opengl does not have pixel or vertex shaders to worry about. nVidia hardware is horrible for DX9 BTW. Why don't you try a test yourself and see what you get a higher FPS on. Run any game in OGL and then in D3D and post your findings. You will find you are wrong.

So the entire internet user base will be thrown in jail for 10 years? This bill will pass how exactly?

agreed. however, most of the fan base is in the US and Japan. but yes... the world!!!!!!!
why L.A.??? there should be an FF Concert tour across the US

I beleive comments like these coincide with those saying linux is dead. Sorry, I just don't buy it.

I don't remember that far back. Probably Limp Bizkit - Nookie

Dayton, Ohio r0xx0rs eh?

UT2k3:
D3D:44.788555 rand[228]
OGL:49.790169 rand[228]
That's an 11% performance increase rendering in OpenGL. I forget which map that was because I ran those benchmarks a while ago.
Half-Life:
D3D: ~78 FPS
OGL: ~143 FPS
That's an 83.33% performance increase running in OpenGL.
System:
AMD Athlon XP 1800+
512 MB PC133
nVidia GeForce FX 5200
Tell me again how things render faster in Direct3D versus OpenGL?
