  1. D3D vs OGL on G5 vs Opteron, Finally · · Score: 3, Interesting

    Unreal Tournament 2003 runs in Direct X mode on the Opteron and OpenGL mode on the G5. Some say this isn't a fair test but if you are choosing between the two systems, you need to know how it runs your favorite game.

    If a G5 running in OGL gets such low scores something is wrong. D3D renders slower and requires more processing power than OGL.

  4. All three = thumbs down on The Best and Worst Movies of 2003? · · Score: 1

    Maybe I'm just a grouch but I was dissapointed with all three films. The Matrix: Reloaded was acceptable due to the fact that eveyone thought all loose endings would be tied in Matrix: Revolutions. However, Matrix: Revolutions was a horrible piece of crap. X-Men 2, is almost as good as Spiderman, which I neither enjoyed or condoned. Lord of the Rings: Return of the King, wow hollywood really screwed the pooch. They had a work of art to start with and work with, and the turned it into a normal hollywood flick. So many important scenes were skewed or cut, also so many things which were not in the book were added. This made me enjoy the movie much less than I thought I would going into the theater.

    That, in addition to many other flaws mad me quite angry during the film.

    Video games laced with human atrocities help young, impressionable people practice killing without care.
    I do not know of any one gamer who considers injuring someone acceptable. Infact, they can not stand real life violence.
    Research shows that playing violent video games increases children's violent thoughts and aggressive behaviors.
    There is also research which disproves the research mentioned above.
    I won't name the most violent video games because I won't advertise them. Violent video games need only change their names or move the violence into other games. Children just need for their parents to play their video games with them.
    I don't think children would be able to handle their parents playing many games with them, mainly because their parents will have a hard time with the learning curve. Believe me, I've tried.

    Furthermore, the author fails to mention any of the positive aspects of video games. Such as problem solving, teamwork, increased coordination, incread reflexes etc. Yes, even in violent video games there are benefits. Well... not in Postal or Postal 2, those games are mindless and stupid.

    Ok throughout the whole movie I was saying WTF? And this is why it is, and why the matrix really will become a reality.

    Before I begin, let me define what the matrix really is:

    var x x == 1 do { matrix } while x == 1

    My code may be a little off, but you get the idea. A possibility for this though is to allow the Matrix MMORPG to thrive. I already got done ranting about why the movie sucked with my friends and am a bit out of steam so here's why the matrix will really happen.

    As his dying wish, Bill Gates will have the first AI created, a subroutine of this AI will be to ultimately create the Matrix. Like all code from the company, it will be full of holes, hence the movie's plot. Also, eventually people will find buffer-underrun errors in this supposable "unhackable and secure program called Windows MtrX!" This is how they find out the Matrix exists and free people's minds. Now all they need to do is find a buffer-overflow to get rid of the damn thing. Neo's hacking skillz must have sucked, for he failed at the buffer-overflow.

  25. Re:Mod parent up... on Lindows Announces Nvu - Frontpage For Linux? · · Score: 1

    oh no. Frontpage sucks at much more than that. FP puts much unneeded code into the page, it also uses FP extentions to create sites which are only accessable on IIS. Moreover, the bundled scripts are horrible, and take something of an 800MHz machine to run when it can be run on a 80MHz machine if you wrote the same function by hand. I do have to admit though, I do use FP... for making my tables, because it only takes about a minute when by hand it takes about five. Oh and the site management, preferably I'd rather do my own stuff rather than have a program do it for me, makes me feel more like I am doing the work not the program. I haven't seen FP used for anything but page editing, very rarely have I heard it used for site publication.
