  1. Mame + Good Games on PC Gaming Suggestions for Console-like Fun? · · Score: 1

    Get mame.

A lot of the old arcade games had less demanding attitude than games today. They actually had to win your attention as you passed by the arcade machine, and were designed for you to want to keep playing (and pop in more quarters). Fighters, brawlers, sports, hack and slash, puzzle, side/top-scrolling shooters, and countless others I'm overlooking: they're all on there, and they're not afraid to use bright colors and really nice 2d sprites. The best part is that almost all of them are 2 player, and a good majority is co-op.

I've found that there's not much more fun than teaming up with player 2 and beating the crap out of the computer with infinite credits. And really, how can you go wrong with a bizarre co-op puzzle game hybrid ?

  2. Ringtones must Die on Short History of Cellphone Ringtones · · Score: 1

It's like a carnival in college classes anymore. You're in your data structures class, and suddenly "Sir Mix-A-Lot" busts in, screaming "pick up tha phone!"

I imagine they wouldn't be so annoying, if everyone had the respect to set their phones to vibrate or silent before coming into class.

I mean, the last thing I want is some old rapper interrupting my slashdot browsing in class...

  3. Dear Friends on The 'Dear Friends' Final Fantasy Concert First Hand · · Score: 2, Interesting

As someone who attended, I must say that the concert was an amazing experience. With the exception of a few songs (specifically terra's theme, it seemed like they could have done a bit better job with the arrangement), everything else was held to a very high standard of quality. Of course, it was great to see the Nobuo there, walking around and shaking hands.

Never would I have thought that a rather official and main-stream venue would be playing some of the defining music from video games. It was quite the experience, and a rather large step in the acceptance of meaningful video games as art.

  5. is it perfect yet? on Are You Talking to Your PC Yet? · · Score: 1

As much as I love progress, I'd much rather type than have speech to text capabilities. Why? for the same reason I would rather type than speak on the phone: Someone down the hall can't hear you.

Unless speech recognition tech has become perfect, then there is a distinct possibility that someone else is going to hear you repeating the same word over and over again with increasing volume and anger, in a futile attempt to get the software to recognize a troublesome word.

  6. a major problem in terms of cinematics on Half Life 2 Stuttering Bug Official · · Score: 1

Well, first off, I'd have to say this is clearly the most immersive game I've played in the past few years. Not to insult Doom 3, but it always felt like the game was to show off the engine, not that the engine was to show off the game.

Half-Life 2 has so much going for it in terms of making the player feel as if he/she is in the role of Gordon Freeman, actually fighting a totalitarian alien government. That's why, what would normally be such a small bug, is so serious in this case. It serves as a very blatant reminder that you're not actually fighting faceless combine forces for the fate of mankind, but sitting in front of a computer.

  8. just a few suggestions on Classic Toys For Christmas? · · Score: 1

This may be me finally hitting the "stay off my lawn" stage of my life, but oh well.

Stay away from the chemistry set. It's interesting and educational, but once most kids find out they can't cause giant explosions or create acid that eats through anything, they'll put it in the closet and never open it again. Nerf, Super Soaker, and even Lego Bricks all seem to have been castrated since my childhood. Nerf is barely alive, Super Soakers only come in weak 'squirt gun' versions, and even Legos seem to have gone entirely into specialized custom piece and movie tie-ins instead of the plain bricks that sparked so much creativity.

So with all the classic toys of my youth dying, what is left?

Model Rockets: Fun, safe (you'll be there, sharing the experience with your kid), and the explosion factor will cause most kids to enjoy it.
Marble Racing Sets: sort of an actual version of 'marble madness.'
If they're old enough, get them a chess set and teach them how to play.

But most of all, just spend time with your kid when he/she plays with the toys. They'll remember it for longer than you think.

  9. gaim, ehhhh on Gaim Maintainer Rob Flynn Interviewed · · Score: 5, Interesting

This will probably be modded as a troll considering it isn't the common Slashdot opinion, but oh well.

I've used gaim off and on over the past year, (on both Linux and windows) and found that the windows port really doesn't compare at all to the Linux version, and to put it simply, on windows, it's really just a waste of resources.

For all the windows users that can't stand the bloated msn messenger or latest official aim client, I suggest at least checking out Miranda. I was introduced to it a few weeks ago by a long time gaim user (who was fed up with all the inconsistencies and problems with gaim under windows) and have been using Miranda almost exclusively since then. Albeit, it has some current issues with file transfers, but I'm sure that's only a momentary problem.

  12. as a recent cs major... on Math And The Computer Science Major · · Score: 1

I've found that the mathematics courses required are a bit more than what I expected. The article certainly states the current situation with most colleges and universities requiring more math courses, something I wish I had a better idea of when signing up and scheduling my first year. The idea that programming doesn't require math is sadly prominent in most of the mindsets of students around here.

Yeah, I just did my scheduling for next semester, with Calc II set up for an 8 am course...

"calculus III is slightly harder than calculus I but not nearly as hard as calculus II"

  14. i'm rather glad, on Pixar Drops Disney To Find a New Studio Partner · · Score: 2, Interesting

Actually I'm quite glad. In my opinion, the only thing keeping Disney's (animated) movie quality afloat was Pixar's stunning contributions.

Disney seems to be playing the role of the archaic ruler here, desperately trying to advance to the next level (abandoning 2d animation department in favor of their own 3d department), but missing the entire point.. It isn't 2d animation that's the problem; it's the quality of the storyline, plot, characters, and overall tone of the last crop of 2d Disney movies. 2d offers a lot of stylistic options that 3d, in this case, hasn't quite been able to emulate. As sad as it is to see 2d's death in Disney, I'm quite glad that pixar is going solo. Disney needs to learn that it is the both the quality of the work and the execution that is driving Pixar's success, and not just eye candy.
