In the future we transplant horse and rabit genes into the human race... No more need for vacuum pumps or viagra... Isn't the human race heading for eternal happiness?
Buy a ticket to a heavy metal concert. Make sure to mention that you must get a place near one of the speaker batteries. After the concert you go home to your dear computer and do some programming... You won't hear much of your computer fan for the coming 24 hours.
It's nice to see that there are events for teaching science to young adults all around the world...
North America - Create your own Cyclotron etc. Europe - Championships for creating innovations. Asia - Creating gadgets events. Australia - Solar car championships. South America - Innovation centres for young people. Africa - Create alternative cooling innovations. Middle East - Create innovative ways of killing the infidels.
I think I'll carry down the fridge to my office and install my computer inside of it. Maybe I can squeeze some extra performance out of this slowpoke computer of mine.
Seriously, the Finns ought to consider to installing all their hardware outdoors... after all, their winters are rather cold.
Whenever Shayne shows off his fantastic little car, a nicely curved girl pops up with a commercial sign for X10... I read X10 has taken patent on this type of commercials... they call it Live Popups (TM)...
Ah, so this is insidious government plan plan for population control: turn all the young men into computer geeks.
It worked on us, didn't it? And most of us Slashdotter aren't Korean.:)
Who was to blame for the last time global warming occurred? Was it some animals who farted a little bit too much? (thereby creating greenhouse gases...) If that was the case, blame the darn cows for the current one!
But why does it work better? Isn't it a sort of balance. A balance between corporate interests and personal/social ones. Companies need to be sound so they can continue giving people jobs. But the people need to be happy, too; 'only a happy worker is a good one'.
I agree with you on that people needs to be happy in what they're doing etc, but unfortunately the businesses are going global, and that means that they won't make people happy here, but in another country. (even if the salary is low, they at least get our jobs) It's very annoying, but a part of capitalism.
In a true communist society, 'globalism' is sort of a no-no since the government is the one to provide people with work. Unfortunately this job security leads to laziness, but at least all the people who wants to work, has a work.
In the end, it's us consumers who decide who gets the jobs.
What I want to say is that shareholder value isn't everything. It can be an indicator that things go well/wrong. but in the end its about the people (and not some 1% in the upper ten- thousands).
I believe you're confusing ECONOMIC systems with POLITICAL systems. But, you've hit the jackpot on what is the root of many of our (USA) problems... the economic system is RUNNING the political system, hence we live in a corporatist society.
I agree with you on that money does have an influence on American politics, as well as in any other capitalistic society where the politicians are depending on campaign contributions from businesses and rich people. But I can't see the difference between the economic and political systems, since they walk hand in hand.
Totalitarianism is the enemy... doesn't matter what economic system is pushing it.
I would assume they're worried that it will set a precedent for people who sell any kind of mods in Australia. If the PS2 guy gets off, how can MS stop the evil guy who does it with their precious Xbox?;)
Microsoft do as they always do... calls Bush Jr... He'll punish the evildoers by ordering the US Air Force to bomb Canberra, Sydney and Melbourne. That ought to send the signal to the Aussies that Microsoft and the American government don't like their laws.
Yes... we don't have controlled media here... It's always "the truth" on all network news in North America... Right.
Won't argue with you on that one. You know that the Bush administration is lying and making up stories... why? Because you're free to search and read information, and you got the freedom to speak and write whatever you want to gather more opinions. Try that in China.
The communists have their problems, but no more so than the rotten capitalists.
Out of these two political systems, my choice is the latter. Communism has never worked, and will never work. Perhaps a mix a la Sweden is nirvana? Just prepare yourself in paying the taxes to keep it running.
The former U.S.A. will be like the third-world/less developed countries in the last century were.
The US will lose it's dominance, but your prophecy of them becoming a third-world country won't come true... at least not as soon as you hope.
Trust me, unless the U.S.A. becomes more aware and involved in world affairs as a peer rather than trying to be a leader, it will quickly become irrelevant.
If the UN just had the balls to take the lead, I wouldn't mind them doing so... but 20th century history shows us a UN without balls and teeth.
The American government (and every other government in west for that matter) might not always tell the truth, but we're free to search and read whatever news and other sources of information to find out what's truth and what's not, whereas the majority of the Chinese citizens just have access to the government controlled media.
Perhaps you should do some reading on Lao Gai or maybe even visit China and speak to the people there, watch a little bit news on CCTV and have a Chinese person translate it for you. Another thing you ought to do if you go to China is to get your hands on their math books and translate some examples from it. I can give you an example here:
Fifteen American soldiers attack your position. You kill
twelve. How many are left?
Maybe you think this is an old math book from the 60s and 70s? Nope, it's taken from a math book one of my wife's friends showed us when we visited them in Tianjin, China, three years ago. As you can see, it's elementary math... for kids.
After you've traveled around in China and talked to the local people, (of course without a government translator) you might realize how fortunate you are for not having to live under their communist regime.
That will be one heck of a phone bill...

I hope we'll see the day when this is going to be implemented over here. (hopefully with a low cost per MB...)
And despite all warning signs, the US government sucks up for the communists. They believe that China will fully open up their markets for American goods, but forget it. China wants to be self-sufficient. That's why they build their own Linux version, their own CPUs, their own motherboards etc. The communists doesn't see the west as a reliable partner, and just as you stated... they want to be able to say fuck off to the west if necessary.
I make a big distinction between the Chinese people and the communists. (after all, the Chinese communist party just have 50 million members. The Chinese people are in general very nice and hardworking people, but the communist regime is a bunch of unreliable liars.
Microsoft is slick. No matter what they're asked to do, they somehow manages to get away with not doing it. The whole DOJ trial was farcical. My best guess is that Microsoft made a deal with the government on implementing government (*cough* NSA *cough*) spyware into Microsoft's products.
Here are some questions you might want to ask these guys:
1. Will American government agencies (eg. FBI, CIA, NSA) have access to the data gathered by
Palladium?
1.1 If 'no': WHO will have access to the gathered data?
2. Has Microsoft considered that the rest of the world might go their own way when it comes to
OS and software?
3. Why does Microsoft have the right to poke around inside a person's private property?
If they say something like they have the right to do it because you might have illegal copies
of software they own, then ask one of the two questions below:
3.1 Is it okay if local store owners in Redmond break into Bill Gates' home a
little bit now and then, just to check if Bill has some of the stolen items
originating from their stores?
3.2 Would you accept video cameras in your house that's controlled by the police?
After all, you might be a thief and keep stolen goods in your home...
Sweet... Now I can hide Adobe Photoshop in an image file. Talk about irony.
... will introduce sliced bread. Thank goodness we got innovative companies like Xerox and Microsoft...
In the future we transplant horse and rabit genes into the human race...

Maybe Red Storm would be a computer for the Chinese government. After all, they already got Red Flag going.

Former Arthur Andersen emploees now work for the government. The shredders runs 24 hours a day to make sensitive reports unpublishable.

I once got this message while running an inhouse Windows application at my former workplace:

Can't find 'User' on C:\Windows\
Well, try C:\Linux\ then...
Looks like the moderators don't get humor even when they see it. :)
Maybe some rivers doesn't flow anywhere near Mt. Kilimanjaro... Africa is big... ;)

Wouldn't it save a lot of time, electrons and trees if you only published articles when Microsoft wasn't up to its old tricks?
If they did, it would be the world's shortest article.
