i was more talking of "traditional" gamemaking not making a mod
as far as i understand you would have still to pay valve to get the whole sourcecode of half-life
and can you sell a mod without some sort of agreement with the developers of the game it is based on????
and as i said half-life was a cool game as it came out.. but the engine is still not a cleaner or better implementation then battelfield
then there was counter-strike making half-life spread over almost every gamers desktop
so it should not be very supprising to see a fair amount of mods for this game

i never noticed valve treat their userbase well
and everyone i know who played counter-strike seriously complained about the engine
and i can't unterstand why anyone should complain about developers trying to make their own engine because this is the only way we get some good engines to make mods for

"I" never played a 3d shooter with more problems...
but don't take me wrong... i really liked the game at the time it came out and counter-strike was my mostplayed game 'till the community got lame (or was it me???)
but don't try to tell me just because a lot of people are very fond of this game its engine is a good implementation....
it's like telling me windows is a cleanly implemented os because everybody uses it

maybe it is hard for a small(unknown) team to convince their investors to give them this amount of money at the start of the development because they have nothing to show
and if they get nothing done the investors sit there with a licence for some gameengine they don't know what to do with
but when they start with their own engine will need their money in small pieces
and everytime the ask for more money the investors can be shown what they achieved

and if you buy a engine like q3 (somewhere i read you pay about 300'000 for it) you can't rewrite all the code just for a feature you would like in your game because you allready spent a lot of money for the code you want to change now
i think game developers like to be free to decide what they want to do and they are allready pruned of a lot of their freedom because they have to get the money from somewhere

this are just my impressions as no-game developer and i would like to be enlightened by someone with experience in this field

    and if you think further
say 20% use windows or office without a licence these 20% help to consolidate the use of microsoft in their environment
they will request office files at work and from friends, they will buy/use windows software, they will teach friends how to use windows/office usw they will recommend windows
if this users would use say linux, they would not use windows software, games would buy hardware with linux drivers and would request documents in an open format would request webdesigners to fix their borken websites(ie only websites) yadda-yadda-yadda
20% is a free invented number (tm)
but the rate of privat users copying software is very high
i was in a pc shop of a mate when a cop came in and ordered a custombuild pc
after all hardware was altogether the sales assistant asked him about software that was needed
then the cop shyly asked would it be possible to put the ms windows/office on the pc without buying it
    the shop assistant was suspiciously

    Pelletier system: 10^9 = 1 Milliard 10^12 = 1 Billion
the Chuquet system was invented 1484 by Nicolas Chuquet.
around 1550 Pelltier invented his system and Germany and GB started using it.
France and USA stayed with Chuquet
1961 France starts to use Pelltier!!!
and GB started to use Chuquet 1974 because it was used in many scientifical publications and economic press (US influence)
Italy and Russia uses some mix of both systems...
maybe it is now time for USA to leave the both french invented systems to some homebrew us thing..

at some point they will install windows and the other software on the harddisk and i think this will happen before they put the harddisk into the computers
then they assamble the laptops put together all lose hardware ...
at some time they will put all the parts in a box with software and everything included
then the box will be labled ..(or it is labled before the packaging)
if this is just somewhat near reality everything they had to change is:
taking a clean harddisk to put into the laptop
dont put the windows disc into the box
make a new lable with no OS checkbox on it
they almost always sell notebooks with different versions of windows... so nobody can tell me it is not possible to make a no windows option too.
and as far as i am concerned it would be enough to sell this online if it is not popular enough for retail selling
