KPN's i-mode was a watered down, chicken version, while Boyugues in France and O2 in the UK have succesfully embraced the whole concept of i-mode - and it shows. Sales and usage of i-mode is going very well in the UK apparently.
You forget one thing. Election year is coming up in Sweden. Overturning the mp3 law (or atleast debating for its removal) will be perfect bait for all these lost youngster who can't decide whether they should vote for the environmental party or the communis...sorry the left-wing party as they decided to rename themselves.
In other news the journal "Nature" has an article on a research team that has used nano devices in the bloodstream that syncronizes cell membrane oscillations, creating an immersed full body sensation of any sound you chose to input into the system.
Dolby Corpus 10000.1 anybody ?
I didn't download any of this (source nor 1.3 gb file ) but I did hear that the 1.3 Gb file is a pile of Gay pr0n (surprise surprise) as a treat to any leeching pirates.
FYI - There have been cases of "modern" Seppuku, with suicides in connection with for example the Kobe Earthquake, where then man in charge of water supplies in the area committed suicide as he was ashamed over not being able to restore water-supply in the area.
But mostly "Seppuku" has been replaced with public apology and crying on press-conferences. Disgracing yourselves in that way on TV is equal to dying for some of these men I guess...
As I am also foreigner working in Japan for a tech company (a japanese tech company that is) I can report that none of my collegues reacted in that way. They rather blamed themselves for not being vigilant enough to download the latest updates regularily. However I agree with you that an official apology would be in place.
I heard though that Microsoft will distribute a few hundred thousand CD-ROMs here in Japan at retail outlets (Yodobashi camera and the like) that will contain the necessary patches...
This move is only planned in Japan as far as I know, which seems that MS Japan does have some sense in local consumer expectations...altough it puzzles me why CDroms will be a necessity with the huge broadband penetration in Japan.
In order to provide cheap connections, Yahoo BB utilises the "Annex A" standard as opposed to "Annex C" as the other major providers do. (ACCA, eAccess & NTT Flets)
Now what does this mean? It means that the connection is A LOT mor suceptible to ISDN noise. And as ISDN is still quite high in use here in Japan, I wouldn't jump on the Yahoo! BB offer. Especially with NTT offering 100Mbps (New Family Type) connections for just a fraction more.
Also, let me give you one word that counts Yahoo! BB out of the game: "NAT".
Cheers
I wish there was a mod-category for Poetry. Your english really makes me happy they teach us common american english in schools here in Europe. And your sense of humour even exceeds your writing abilities. BTW, Caps Lock is the big button on the left.
I found this: SARS Scam the other day linked from a skepticism site...
Now, this very article is probably all groundless wild speculation (especially as the author of the artcile also has a webshop with HERBAL pills that will heal just about anything), but it would be interesting to ponder if even on a fictional level, how diseases released at certain times, could help shift peoples focus away from other world-events. And also as a mass-psychological behavioural experiment.
Many hard-core gamers do STEAL software. I am not saying all, nor implying the majority does (hell, I don't know any figures here).
But rather than average Joe, it is logical to think that it would rather be a hard-core gamer who would go through the trouble and hassle to copy console games.
Personally I am against piracy for moral reasons.
However, you can not deny that "unlocked" platforms are more attractive to the average scrupleless consumer than locked ones. Denying that would be naive. (Include the Asian market minus Japan in that calculation)
That is the only point I tried to make, that it might not ONLY be a negative effect of unlocking the system.
As for increasing your marketshare by 100%, it is ofcourse extremely arbitrary, but it seems you are missing my point. I am not talking real figures here ofcourse, because there are no empirics to employ here. I am just trying to describe a possible effect of shifts in the market structure.
Cheers
I'm not saying it's good nor bad, rather a piece of reality.
Perhaps not undesirable developments after all

GameCube ISOs Released?
·
· Score: 2, Interesting
Let's face it. The GameCube is losing behind PS2 and XBOX. Both PS2 and XBOX are "piratable" or "backupable" whatever you like to call it. I doubt the XBOX would have taken off so fast if it would not have been for all the moddings made available for it. I doubt the PS(1) would have overtaken the others so quickly if it wouldn't have been for chipping. Allowing a core of hard-core (otaku) to release and trade GC games would definately lead to more Base-systems being sold. More base systems lead to a better market share, which in turn makes more developers interested. Then after 1 year of this *BAM!* a new copy protection. Nintendo sits with double the installed base of base-units they did before the copying, and a whole community running around the console.
Perhaps not such a bad outlook after all.

I saw this camera on display in Akihabara, Japan
on
First HDTV Camcorder
·
· Score: 1
It was hooked up to a plasma display and the picture quality was ofcourse amazing. I was however surprised by one thing. The system was hooked up in real-time, so I could see myself being captured in HDTV on the screen, but it was delayed about 2 seconds. I don't think it was a setting but rather due to the high resolution being encoded in realtime. Anyone have any other idea why this is ?
The phone also features a camera and imageprocessing software to convert CMOS picures to 3D for viewing on the display. I checked it out and it's actually pretty cool. No glasses needed ofcourse since it's based on the new SHARP screen as was mention earlier on here.
Sorry for calling you guys (OMRON) small. But I meant that in the relative sense as in that you are not Matsushita... Kyoto seems nice by the way. A lot of interesting innovative companies. KYOCERA for example. I guess the culture differs a lof from Tokyo where I work. Even Procter & Gamble (also relatively serious with their corporate citizenship) chose Kyoto for their headquarters... quite interesting.

Sure, but its not a reversed linear relationship. Look at the characterisics of Annex A,B and C. Speed by Distance curves differ between them three.
150Mbit ?! They'd better bundle the modems with 200Gb harddrives.
What about between 1.000 and 13.000. Skip the extremes, I need more than the 1.5 I get today!
Where are my moderator points when I need them. You are entitled to your opinions, but this is just too trollish to be true.

Sorry about that, here is the working link for the 3D phone: DoCoMo SH251iS
Is it just me or does that dude need a new monitor more than anything else ?

They'd better make it APO. Perhaps Flourite crystalline could help ;).
