Holy shit. Someone should be forced to upgrade? WTF? Why should that be? Should I be forced to give up my classic 1974 Chevy Impala because it's not 'up to date'?...because there are newer and more efficient engines available? Why is a computer any different?
I don't mean to attack the author personally, but I don't like this kind of thinking.

Chewbacca was an imperial slave before Han Solo rescued him. Perhaps we'll see his enslavement. I can't be sure if we'll see young Naval Officer Han Solo rescue hime though. At the time of Episode 2, I estimate that Solo was between 5 an 10 years old. So if Ep 3 takes place 10 years later, you've got a 15 to 20 year old Solo. That's a big stretch of time for a human.
But I think I can guess that we'll see Chewie as a slave. That sounds pretty reasonable to me.

Hey listen, if you're really worried about the licensing, feel free to send the CD's my way.
If someone from MS is giving me 8 CD's full of software & telling me that I can use it for free, I'm going to keep my big mouth shut except to say thank you. Why bother questioning the freaking license. If there was a problem, believe me, MS would not be handing out discs.
Non-commercial use is OK by me. So I can learn.net stuff for free. Cool.

Excellent point bro. I couldn't have said it better myself.
I read this as Pentium Clock with Atomic Precision
So I'm thinking to myself, why would someone make a clock with a Pentium in it? What would be the point? Some kind of wi-fi enabled clock that turns on the wi-fi enabled coffee machine in the morning?
What Sim City needs is a new zone. Like a red light district.
You can use it to map tiles like any other zone, except that for realism is has to be attached to an industrial or commercial zone. Because it's legit, the city tresury gets a cut of the action.
It'd be the biggest simoleon maker in Maxis history.
Though the red light district is not without it's problems. You'd need to open more clinics to deal with STD's and you'd need more police presense than usual to help deal with potential problems( like underage johns or unlicensed hores). This of course costs money, but fits in pretty nicely with the game's mode of play.
The hell with premade cities like Berlin and NYC. Give me Reno, NV and Amsterdam!!
>>Gee, now I feel bad being the co-op student who needs advice a couple times a day. I at least try to bug different people each time!:-)
No No, please don't feel bad. Teaching is part of the job. At least I think so. And I try extra hard to not appear distrurbed when a junior guy comes with questions.
I remember very well what it was like to ask people for help. Hell, I still have to sometimes.
If you find that someone that you're looking to for help is making it obvious that he's being 'bothered' then he's probably just a selfish person who's forgotten what it was like when he was new.
Hopefully when you become a senior person you'll remembr what it felt like to be new, and you'll try to pass kindness and understanding down to your junior guys.
From personal experience I have to agree with this. In the morning when I come in it takes a good 10 minutes for me to settle down and start to think 'in code'. Once the train starts rolling though, the ideas (usually) just flow down to the keyboard.
If I'm interrupted, it's like the train fell off a cliff.
So then I have to focus on whatever interrupted me, while trying desperately to cling on to those ideas that didn't make it down to the keyboard before I was interrupted. Because now i'm having to think in 'real world'.
If I'm interrupted to help another developer debug something, or brainstorm a problem (which I enjoy immensly) It's harder because I have to switch over to their programming mode, and try to understand what they're doing.
So then when I can finally get back to the joy that is programming, it takes another 10 minutes or so for me to get back to where I was.
I know it sounds like a buch of BS, but it's true. If people keep bugging me, I can lose an hour (or more) in startup time every day. It's not that I'm not working, it's that I'm not working at peak.
What the hell did they have to go and touch that for? Was is broken?
Yeah, so the new Microsoft standard malloc() and takes 10 times as long to load as the old version. But with this increase in time, the customer can be sure that the memory allocations are being done more securly, and in a way that's good for them.
Also as a bonus, no more pesky free()'s. When that memory gets allocated, it STAYS allocated untill you (have to) reboot your system.
>>While your COBOL program is waiting on the results of a huge DB2 transaction, my java program is kicking off 19 more transactions.
You got me there bro.:)
My post wasn't meant to trash java, or your programming efforts. Just trying to understand what other guys are doing, and why.
I wasn't thinking about the Iron Penguin when I posted. We've got LINUX partitions on a couple of our frames. I forgot about this. They're still being tested at this point(in house bs really), but should be in prod later this year.
I never said that I liked JCL. It serves it's purpose, but it still gives me a headache. I do like COBOL though. Simple, straightforward. Sure the program layout is a little ancient, but once you get into the Procedure Division and start writing code, it's OK.
I've never found the time to write 370 assembly, probably because no user has ever funded a project that needed it. I look at my compile listings and I can follow what's going on. I'd like to learn one day. Maybe I'll have free time in 2005.

Yeah. But think about how bad it is for the companies that try to process that much data without the benefit of the mainframe and all the related utilites/hardware enhancements.

Oh crap, there goes my Karma.
I checked the wrong link.......
There's only a preface on line. Why is this news?
I'll check back in a couple of months and see how much of the actual book is there.

It happens. And has happened to me. One of the interns I was mentoring got me started on Java. Prior to this I was a hardcore C and C++ guy.
No one knows everything. And fresh blood can be a very good thing if you keep an open mind.

Sorry dude.
The red stapler is a 747(look at the model number and the plate on top ofthe stapler).
The black 747 also sells for $29.
Red:
S7074740 $28.99
Black:
S7074741A $28.99
Yeah, I know that this is kind of silly. But what the hell, I need a diversion.
No hard feelings eh?
>>The black stapler sells for $9.99, the same exact model in red sells for $49.99
Not true.
The red one is priced about the same as the others.
Though $30.00 for a stapler seems like a lot of money. What does it do? Spellcheck before stapling?
