I thought about that as I was posting, and I was careful never to say what I thought was right or wrong. However, most TV shows are still not available on DVD. So no, I dont think it should be illegal. I dont think downloading MP3s should be illegal either. The television broadcast industry and the music industry should look at all these copying methods as free advertisement.

  2. The decision in courts made sense on 20 Year Anniversary of Home Taping Decision · · Score: 5, Insightful

The article said that the supreme court decided people video-taping TV at home was not the same as people downloading from the internet, and I agree with this. Although I think downloading music is a bad thing, it is quite different from video-taping a TV show. Since the TV was pretty much the only means of watching the TV show, if you wanted to watch it at any other time it was impossible. You couldnt go to a store and buy your favorite TV show. However, music is not confined to the radio only. There have been records for a long time, tapes, and now CDs are all over the place. So the argument that you just wanted a more convienent time is bullshit and was a dumb thing to argue.

My two cents: they should have argued that it was boosting sales and that the music industry should just be happy and not shoot itself in the foot.

Add in some really advanced computer special effects and it can even direct, act, and produce a movie for you. It's really quite imaginable that technology will soon be able to do all the jobs humans currently do, and do them better and faster.

Everyone who reads slashdot must have at one point or another had a frustrating expierence with a person who couldnt figure out how to do some simple task on thier computer. You quickly do it for them even if you have never done that specific function before becuase you have at least some rudimentary idea of how programs work. You dont need to know specificaly how to program in some language, but you have some idea of how it is programmed. Thats why you can do it and they cant. They have no idea how it works. It's all a big magic box to them.

Then when someone comes along and simply points that out, you call them an idiot. It's true! In order for people to be better end users they have to have some idea of how and why programs work. Since computers are becoming more and more common in our society today, it isnt a very big leap in logic to assume that people are going to need more and more about how they work.

Other than a few media clips the CD doesnt contain anything different from a normal newspaper. I think distributing the same thing in two mediums is annoying. I either want to read the paper, or watch a video. The short clips on the CD are easily available online too. The only place it makes sense to me to put a CD is on computer or game magazines where the CD content (game demos and apps) cannot be duplicated by 'traditional' means. Adding a CD to the paper makes it clumsy.
