  1. Re:Two Markets on Nintendo to Counter PSP Media Features · · Score: 1

I already said that the PSP has the better screen and graphics.

As for Nintendo's counter... It means they came up with an mp3/movie solution that works for both the DS and the SP. If you like it, great, buy it. If not, don't.

It's only going to be a couple years before portable media players are common place anyways. The media playback functionality of the PSP is only going to be really relevant for a couple of years. Portable movie devices aren't nearly as big a deal as music. Can't watch a movie while walking or riding a bike, or doing many other activities one can do with music. And mp3 players are practically common hat now.

So in the end, Sony isn't as far ahead of the game as they'd like to be. Their advantage is having the better screen, for now.

  2. Two Markets on Nintendo to Counter PSP Media Features · · Score: 1

The hand held market now seems to be large enough to support both a high end and a low end hand held devices simutaneously. The GBA-SP being the low end at $80 and the DS and PSP both being high end devices priced at $150+.

The PSP was supposed to have the upper hand in the high end market, by having music and movie playback. Now we see Nintendo releasing the Play-yan. Not only does it let the DS play back movies and mp3s, but it also brings these features to the lower end market. Thus, stealing serious thunder away from the PSP.

In the end, the PSP will still have the larger screen and have the better graphics engine. But the DS is now on par with just about every other aspect, if not better.

Agreed. Same is true about load times.

  4. Re:who votes for these things? on 2004 Video Game Walk of Fame Inductees · · Score: 2, Informative

Agreed. If any FPS deserves to be up there it's Doom. There are at least a couple of dozen or so games that would have been better. Not because I think Halo is a terrible game, but Halo has yet to stand up to the test of time. My vote is for Tetris or Pac-Man.

  5. I hope the system does well on Official DS Website Launched · · Score: 4, Interesting

I can see myself chatting and gaming with strangers at bars, movie theaters, coffee houses, etc... But that's only if the DS reaches critical mass. It'll make for a better social device than the PSP, thanks to the touch screen and pictochat. I think Nintendo has a winner on their hands.

  6. Re:GTA does NOT promote killing cops on GTA Blamed for Columbine-style Massacre Planning · · Score: 3, Informative

That's wrong. I just beat Vice City 30 minutes ago. And there is a Malibu Club mission where you have to bust Cam Jones out of a police station. I doubt there is any possible way of beating that mission with out killing, at bare minimum, half a dozen cops.

And for the record, killing real life cops is evil. Support the police. Su-su-suport the police.

  8. Icarus on Sony to PSP Coders: Battery Life Your Problem · · Score: 4, Informative

  9. Nintendo breaths a sigh of relief on PSP Pricing Announced · · Score: 2, Insightful

Wow! That just eliminated the possibility of me picking one up for myself. Besides the price, I think Sony is failing on several levels.

While I think Sony was smart to purse the 18-25 demographic, I think they've missed an opportunity to capture the large demographic of women gamers. Over at the official japanese DS site, Nintendo is featuring a young woman laughing and writing on the DS. I believe they're implying she is chatting with someone using pictochat. The DS comes with pictochat built in. Pictochat + touchscreen + wireless is a huge boon for Nintendo to capture the women demographic, as the DS is now by default, a communications device.

As for kids... Many parents won't fork over $350 for a handheld. But let's say you have two kids, it makes more sense to get each kid their own DS rather than pay an extra $50 to get a single PSP.

It also won't help Sony that Nintendo will start selling the DS earlier, releasing the product in time for the busiest American shopping day of the year, the day after Thanksgiving. The PSP, reportedly, won't ship until after xmas.

As for the PSP having video play back functionality, I don't think it'll make one difference. One would have to buy or re-buy movies. Buying movies will also cut into consumers funds to buy video games. Plus, you can't casually watch a movie like you can casually listen to music.

  10. Damage control on Sony PSP Hardware Completed · · Score: 4, Interesting

I believe Sony is doing damage control by releasing this information. I have serious doubts the PSP will be sold by the end of the year. It's much more likely that they are just trying to delay consumers from buying the DS. If the DS does reasonably well pre x-mas, and gains a lot of momentum, Sony will have a much harder time selling their product. As nice as the PSP sounds, I really have doubts that it'll have the same impact the playstation had. imho

I'm calling shenanigans on Sony. This is pure marketting garbage. While I'm sure CELL technology will benefit some areas of computing, video gaming won't be one of them for a long time. I can see Sony using this technology to encourage PS3 owners to buy Sony brand cell processor televisions, dvd players, music mans, etc... All for a technology that most game developers won't even bother with.

IMHO... Sony is making mistake with the PSX. I don't believe a device like this would capture the attention of the American consumer market. Even if it does, they've pushed the release date too close to the rumored launch of the PS3. Plus, since everyone and their grandmother already owns a PS2, many of them won't want to pay for functionality they already own.

I think I have to go with the DS. Both show a lot of positives. And the developers obviously think this as well. But it seems like the developers are more excited about the DS. And maybe this excitement will translate into some great new games for the DS. My $0.02.

Chances are, if you own any of the games on the list, you already own one of the two earlier cards. And since all these tiles aren't any good, the real question is, why did you invest your money into such garbage? :)

As for the reasons why we might need a larger card... I'm guessing the reason Nintendo is releasing a larger memory card is so that developers can create games that take advantage of a larger save space. I've heard that some developers have felt the 59 and 251 are too limiting.

I grew up in arcades of the 80's. Call me a littled biased, but I find games like Pac-man, asteroids, tempest, and such to be of much higher quality than most modern arcade games. Sure, they have better graphics and take up four times more space and cost two dollars, but they lack certain special something. Dance Dance Revolution is the obvious exception to this.

Anyways, I found myself at one of those kiddie pizza places with a modern arcade last night. And they had Ms. Pac-man, Asteroids and a Galaga machine in these ultra small cabinets, sized for 6 year olds. Only the adults were playing these games, including myself. You should have seen it. Everyone had to lean way over and out in order to reach the controls. Funny stuff.

Recently learned that the Ms. Pac-man / Galaga 20th Anniversary Machines have a very special Easter Egg... Pac-man! After you put in your money and the select screen comes up, enter in UP UP UP DOWN DOWN DOWN LEFT RIGHT LEFT RIGHT LEFT. You should hear a noise and see the ghost change colors. Press start using the Ms. Pac-Man side and you have Pac-Man. I've verified that this works.

I've seen DVD players for 30 bucks. If nintendo put in a DVD player, it would cost an extra 30 bucks or more. A lot of people own DVD players, I think those people would prefer not to pay the extra cash for a feature they already have. Plus, some of that extra money just goes to Sony, since they license the technology. Believe me when I say DVD playback functionality will no longer help sell a significant amount consoles.
