I'm not sure if they're really going to do away with pollution per se. I think the intent is that you don't necessarily have to manage your workers to clean up the pollution that shows up on the map. This definitely was a PITA as the AI can sometimes get glitchy during multiplayer games and you'd have to micro-manage your workers.

I'm super excited about the enhanced multiplayer. Hopefully it won't be as unstable as Civ 3 with all the sync problems and AI lag.

This really depends on the age and stage of life of said recruits. I would think, generally, that a younger out-of-college crowd would appreciate being in or near a city. For the older crowd, or those starting families, living out in the sticks as you call it would definitely be less distracting.

I think you are right in the idea that EQ2's early launch will try to grab the market that isn't willing to split its money over two games.

IMO, the two games are different enough to attract two different crowds. It's a love/hate relationship between WoW and EQ2. Those who love WoW think EQ2 sucks and vice versa. It's a good thing for Blizzard to release an open beta now so that those who feel unfulfilled by WoW can make their decision before EQ2 comes out. The only game that loses out here is Guild Wars, which I feel can't compete with a free WoW open beta (If indeed Blizzard open beta launches this weekend).

If you're looking for EQ2 to be the same game as EQ you may be disappointed. The website FAQ answers a lot of these issues you seem to have in your post. An example: Reducing the number of starting cities follows the story. EQ2 is supposed to be a good/evil type game with two towns being the light/dark side of the world. There was a reason why they chose to do that. In the same vein, each town consists of many more zones than in the old EQ.

IMO, EQ2 is attempting to do some different and interesting things for the social aspect of MMORPG's. There are more dimensions (guilds, families, guild status points) to this than there were in previous games.

  7. Half Life International Online Soccer on Why Are There No Sports MMO Games? · · Score: 2, Insightful

Half Life has a mod where you play on a soccer team. You can play any position that isn't already taken by someone else (even goalkeeper, though the server owner can lock it so that players can't be goalkeepers).

I've played it a few times. It's not MMO in that there are no stats taken that persist over time, but it made for interesting gameplay. It took a while to get used to the controls and as others have posted everyone wants to be the star. It's tough to bunch random people on a team and actually have them do what's best for the group.

I suspect that the best way of putting the game together would be to have "classes" of players for whatever sport you're implementing and filling in the boring roles with computer players (possibly having their behavior controlled by the team captain).

I agree with this, but as you noted, the existence of griefers probably throws off any expectation of having a model "realistically represent behavior" of your players. I haven't seen any effective way to deter their actions. I believe it's for this reason most developers decide to just disable PK'ing and be done with it instead of having to deal with the headaches that PvP life brings.

  9. Re:How very ironic... on ATITD2 Early Impressions · · Score: 2, Insightful

    Exactly.

The thing is, in this game, the goal isn't to just be. It's about the evolution of the in-game world and a social experiment to determine whether the people involved can band together to build the "wonders" of the world.

Growing carrots is one thing. You don't need the carrots to eat, though. It's all part of building something else. It contributes to the richness of the world.

From what I can tell, the endgame requires construction of obelisk's and pyramids. It takes A LOT of resources to accomplish. That's the game. How you get there is up to the players.

Anyways, I agree with you, it really is a "government" that ties it all together. I put government in quotes because it isn't government like usually picutre; It's government as in people getting together and making rules for themselves.

In most MMO games I've played, there are always people that do want (and need) to be led, and there's usually a person who is willing to do the leading (for whatever motivation: money, fame, power).

Actually, it's both and it's very dependent on the person you ask.

People play MMORPG's for different reasons. Some play for the game (sounds like your friends) and some play for the social interaction (glorified chat room).

Sure Everquest is addictive. Most people who play realize that. The reason that people keep coming back, though, is a personal one and it's probably some mixture of the gameplay (crawling up the ladder) and the social (playing with 20-50 of your guildmates/friends) aspect.

I used to play EQ for two and a half years. I learned a lot about the social interaction between people and between groups of people by watching and listening to the environment. If you haven't experienced it, I think you'd be surprised how human nature really rears its head within the game.
