  1. come on... on Sun's Linux Killer Examined · · Score: 4, Interesting

Linux is to Solaris/sparc what the Mac platform is to the Intel platform. (At least before the whole Intel/Apple deal)

You have Solaris/sparc which is rock-solid on its Sparc platform, with integration using the OpenBoot PROM to 100% compatibility with its Sun arrays, Sun NICs, Sun hard drives, Sun video cards (rebadged, but still labeled as Sun)

Then you have Linux doesn't have a specific hardware platform so it is made to be as compatible as possible, and while a lot of hardware is known to work great with Linux, the QA team at Sun who is able to directly interact with Brocade, QLogic, and other vendors to address one-off issues provides a value-add that CIOs like which Linux does not offer, yet.

  11. Duh on In Which OS Do You Feel More Productive? · · Score: 1, Troll

This question is critical in all environments, end-user and enterprise. The answer is really another question. What role does the end-user or server need to do? If the end-user wants to simply read websites, check mail, and write a document or two, a Celeron with Windows XP is the ideal choice. If an end-user wants to play with multiple OSs in VMware, terminal service to their house from work, and play the latest games, a P4 with W2K is the ideal choice. If a server is going to perform SMTP/POP3/IMAP/webmail, I would recommend an HP DL 380 G4 with RHEL 3.0. If they want to upgrade their domain controllers, I'd go for HP DL 380 with W2K3.

I have to give credit to Microsoft purchasing the company who made this AntiSpyware program. Yesterday I went to a client site and their server got infected (surfing on a naughty site I'm sure) and AdAware and Spybot removed a few but the machine was still hosed. I was unable to double click on any icon on the desktop - I would get a GPF. I went in safe mode with networking, downloaded the MS AntiSpyware tool, went in regular mode to install it (LUCKILY that worked, not sure why), went back in safe mode to run the tool, and it wiped out over 20 different spyware signatures and over 100 files, much more than either of the other tools. After a few hours, the machine was running perfectly with the icons allowing to be double-clicked on.

  19. The reason why some NICs don't auto-neg on LiveJournal Blackout Analysis Online · · Score: 2, Informative

I have run across this issue in data centers numerous times. This still occurs with the latest hardware, no matter what vendor or OS. I have this problem on SunFire280Rs and Compaq DL360s. What it comes down to is the switch being used in the data center and the settings in the OS. Typically, data centers set their switch to forced 100-full (unless of course they are using fibre or Gb). The OS must be set to force its NICs in the same mode, or they will either drop alot of packets. Sounds like a disconnect in communications between the NOC and the customer.
