  1. This is not the "ipod killer" you are looking for. on MSFTs "iPod Killer" Readied for Europe · · Score: 1

    a) Archos HAS offered a portable video type device for some time - it's a 20GB for about $500 I think. b) The market for a music player is much larger than a portable video player. This is because an athlete is looking for something to make the workout go by, the student is trying to get accross campus, and "in the zone" and we already have stupid portable dvd players which don't sell well. c) the iPlay (released by Apple in June 2005) will incorporate 3rd gen iPods as the storage medium, but will include a nice bright screen and kickin' interface for playing videos which you will download from the "iMovie Video Store" for $9.99 or less.

Just a comment about the HDD, you'd want to do it via tFtp instead (look at what JWZ did to get things booted - look at "kiosk") or Movix would be interesting for this project as well.

Finally (and probably the easiest), you can get compact flash adapters for these things which would allow a solid state minimal linux distro to be booted, then pull the images from a share elsewhere through a cron-jobbed xsetroot with random images. (I did this exact thing once).

To refer to JWZ again, Webcollage is REALLY COOL on one of these.

I just want a network appliance that does ftp/smb/nfs deamons without the overhead (and cost) of a PC.

"having to switch back to linux and losing time reinstalling everything because the hardware is too crappy to whistand normal use is aggravating him."

He didn't say "normal use" in the article, you assumed it. Although an iBook my be a bit more delicate than a Dell (which 90% ABS plastic). How do you know he didn't like using the thing in bed, sitting it on a comforter where it could overheat everytime... You have no idea what his usage habits were.

Having to reinstall linux everytime? what is it that he's changing. Backup your files, have a default set of apps on the desktop, sorry you don't have your laptop for a week... it's the way things work. He also mentions he has Linux boxen all over, why is this so difficult? Why does he need to reinstall each time? How can he backup his data with a fried Logic Board, don't you need to it boot? Unless you don't need it to use OpenFirmware of whatever.

Furthermore, the reason YellowDog can work so well is because it's targetted towards Macs, which have a finite set of system configurations. This is the reason getting stuff on PCs under Linux to work can be such a pain.
