Actually Grym is right on this one. Grym knows that I am far left of center and even I can see the mess that this was. Why didn't they arrest Koresh in town when they had the chance? Why not wait them out? Why not put a 20mm round through their water supply and wait for them to run out of water? Truth of the matter is that there are about a million things that could have been done, but the whole thing was run by a bunch of yahoos who were given too many guns and too little supervision. As one poster stated -
the Branch Davidians murdered 4 law enforcement officers and wounded 20 others. You call this "resisting", but I'm more of an old-fashioned kind of a guy; I say we call murder "murder."
I say that if you show up in the middle of no where and drop a poorly marked assault force with no real plan other than "rush" and no back up or contingency plan of any sort you are asking for trouble. The man that ordered that mess should be sitting in prison.Besides anyone knows why the cops who outnumber a lone gunman 20:1 dont rush in, or sniper him immedialty - it is amuch about the safty of the man on the inside as the cops on the outside.

I have actually seen the "proof" tapes that still circulate the far right about what "really" went down that day - and I got to say there are some odd bits that could use some better explaination.

No one is "forced" to join a Union. What you may be referring to (though I doubt it) is "Fair Share". Fair Share is a due that you pay, even if you do not belong to the Union, to work in a Union shop. What it basically is about is that if the Union members go to all the trouble to organize, and bargain as a group - so that they can limit the abuse to workers and gain higher wages - that you as a worker in that shop should help out in the expense. You are literally paying Fair Share so that you can get higher wages. The Union protects you in many other ways (Dismiss w/o cause etc. ) that you also pay for without realizing it.

Walmart as an employer blows major chow, even with the Union representation in the few stores that have managed to get it in.

As far as politics go the Dems are much more Labor (and by that I mean anyone who punches a clock) friendly then the Repubs. That is the traditional Dem base in part - their was a day when union busting would get you killed. Now-a-days it is business as usual.

I guess my thought on this is that though you may be a fantastic (fill in the blank here) there comes a day when you can still do your job, but are no longer the 'Flavor-of-the-Month'. Then what do you do? Truth be told I can always find 2 people younger than you willing to work at .25 of your wage that can do the same job. Always. But ther is the rub...they *cant* do the same job, but for half your price - I can try,and will do so, despite that in the long run it will cost me money. And I as a corperation will live with results..because corp profit is what matters...not substance, and (surprise) it is the young guys running it that run the stats about how much much money dumping those 'Dinosaurs' is saving them.

And that *IS* WalMart ..all profit - - as long as the US consumer can buy tongs for $0.34 per. If you want to get into the cheaper, faster, better race, jump on in, and when in 10 years you start to drown, holler out, I will be waiting on the shore with an anvil slightly lighter than your Corperate Masters.

("Geez Bob, we will never dig ourselves out of that hole!") I would severly doubt that the cost is 3-4 times as expensive for openers. Even if you hire RedHat themselves to help in the conversion, I doubt it would be that much. Also - remember there is no such thing as a "product upgrade cycle for Windows" - you pay out on a regular basis or pay throught he nose for newer versions.

As for the thrre times as long to deploy stuff, every upgrade 3.1->9x->2000->xp has had a year+ learning curve for users/admins as well. Getting them to train in their spare time by running machines side by side, or setting them up for real training - I give it a year before they could start to roll out some services (DHCP, file server, Domain Control)confidently. There are even pop in distros that will do all this for you, clarkconnect comes to mind.

Yup it is slow and it aint got a heck of a lot in terms of memory etc. But, I would be willing to bet the power usage is low - and I will also bet that there is a window manager of somesort that we could get running on it.

These aren't even the only guys out thier doing it either - this is just the first one I googled up. Give these guys a call for a million a year and I will bet for $100/unit they could produce, and the speed would ramp up fairly quickly as well.

Chances are that the "jobs" you have gooten so far are the "kiss and a check" kind of jobs. They are the kind that after 10 hours of troubleshooting a job - because you couldn't talk the customer out of trying to put Wi-Fi in thier 4 story house and the WAP in the basement, you end up asking for $50 because -well, you didn't realy get the job done. So you walk out with your check, and a kiss for being a sweetheart about the whole thing.

I build computers for people on the side, and it is a fun hobby that makes me a little bit of money to support my Athlon64 habit. I go buy the parts, put it together, drop on your choice of OS, and preinstall the minimum of software so that getting on the net is not a death sentence for your new machine. Before I deliver it, I offer a $10 discount if I can install linux on the machine as a dual boot. I then deliver the machine (or they pick up) and and give them "The Talk" and answer questions (takes about an hour) - in the end I charge $50-100. Now for me this is a hobby, I am just under Dell for total price for the same hardware and I give free tech support for 6 months to boot.

In short - I and people like me are the death of your vision.

There are a lot of us out there and even with great networking you will not beat our niche. And you certainly aren't going to make a living out of it.

What you need to do is look for a real job, get the experience and start to collect a clientelle on the side. Hopefully someone you know will start a real business and need some outside consulting - and then you just may get on the road. Not to be unkind, but there are an awful lot of very good techies scraping the ground for any cash that will come up - dont plan on this buying groceries any time soon.

Somewhere on Slashdot there was notice about a three part series about becoming a consultant - wonderful to read, very honest and inspirational -cant find it though sadly :/
