It's not a new strategy it's something that has been around for a long time and it's about the power of names and definitions.
For other examples see:
Freedom Fighters vs. Terrorists
Inprisonment and torture vs. reeducation
etc...
I agree totally. I have witnessed a lot of people asume that since something is free and not sold in the store it's inferior.
Plus most people (especially those on dial-up) don't want to be hunting down packages and libraries on the net.
I think a lot more people (mythical average users) would feel comfortable switching if they knew they could pick up software at any computer store.
The reason Majestic did poorly because it was a poorly conceived and implemened game. It was entirely linear and the player did not actually influence the gameplay.
I work with microarrays which generate a lot of data. I have to use software tools to filter the results and come up with some relevant biological insights.
Hopefully there will also be some way of predicting biological functions of unknown genes based on their expression profiles.
If you prefer I do not call this "data mining" please let me know what the preferred nomenclature is so I don't offend your CS sensitivities. The biological literature calls this type of work data mining. It is not uncommon for different disciplines to have a similar name for quite different endeavours.
I agree. I am doing my PhD in Genetics right now and I get a really nice package:
Free Tuition
A stipend
Free Medical School tuition (combined MD/PhD)
I am trying right now to learn how to program and do Bioinformatics/data mining.
If I had to do it over I would still get my undergraduate degree in Biology but I would at least get a minor in CS or do a double major.
This could easily be solved by the retailers by having a printed, laminated copy of the EULA attached to the shelf next to the box. It may make people actually read them and pay attention to them so they realize how little rights they have with commercial software.
I think it's doing that because it is trying to generate previews of all those pictures.
Open the folder and from the View menu Select List
That might fix it.
I agree. I also thought floppy drives were quite useless and when I built a new computer I almost omitted one. At the last second I added a drive from an old computer "just in case"
Boy was I glad two weeks later when I started getting weird error messages and the computer was acting very odd. Having a boot floppy around was really helpful then...
I agree that the specs are great but most people buy the console not because of the cool technology but because of the games.
The X-Box still lags far behind in exclusive titles that make it worthwhile to buy (Halo being the exception).
I bought a PS2 for Christmas mainly because of the vastly superior games.
The one thing that makes the X-Box really attractive is the Live service. Unfortunately there is no broadband where I live (and no plans for it anytime soon)

It's true! My cousin was finger painting in BASIC when he was a baby. When he turned three he hacked his Etch a Schetch to run Linux. He's seven now and he is writing his own OS!;)
To learn more about the recall action and the process for replacing the affected units, users should visit www.apc.com or call 866 APC-RELY (866 272-7359).
You could try their ironically spelled phone number. My guess is though you will have to go through 7 menus and wait on hold for a while before you can actually talk to someone. Good luck
I actually noticed this a while ago when trying to follow up on citations in papers. I often found that the paper mentioned had little to do with the way it was cited.
It seemed at times the author really had no clue what the paper they cited actually stated.
Another pet peeve of mine is people that publish two papers covering essentially the same data (with minor differences) in two different journals, thus artificially increasing the number of publications they have.
Unless they had actual physical proof that the file in question was the copyrighted material I cannot see how they could sue them.
Screenshots are a joke (give me 30 min and Photoshop and I could make a credible screenie of Kazaa with anything I would want on it). Also all they have is a file name on the screen. Just because it's labeled Adobe Photoshop it is not necessarily that (the amount of mislabeled stuff on p2p is pretty signinficant).
Yep it's affected me too since I almost had to drop out of school playing it too much...
PS: CM 4 looks like a huge disapointment
If you value your eyes. Don't click that.
Now we'll have a new excuse for crashes:
Sorry boss I don't have that document, my hard drive just mutated...
I hope so, I could finally fulfill my life long dream of becoming Jean Claude VanDamme!!!

I think we just witnessed the geek equivalent of jocks comparing penis sizes in the locker room. :)

It probably did not help that you were piss drunk the entire time :)

There is nothing sadder for a parent than having to burry their clone....
Somehow that just did not sound right.
Actually the Science one is still up here:
Not very complete but you can still get some good journals for free.

No wonder the Maytag repairman visits his house every week.

By then I think she might have to come back from the grave.
And Timeline was turned ito a really bad game (mmmm jumping puzzles). I guess what he meat was that he had no future in gaming.
