So, instead of paying my last Charter bill, I could have bought 1800 shares of Charter stock. Yep, they'll be out of business shortly, but I'd love to have that faster service.
We shouldn't have to go to the trouble to ask to be taken off a list. The default should be *opt-in*, not *opt-out*.
Unless I've given specific permission to a company, a charity, a pollster, a politician, or a charity they shouldn't be allowed to call me, PERIOD. The DNC lists we have now fail because they allow too many exceptions.
Does Amazon itself actually sell anything anymore? 99% of the items I look for are being sold by third-party vendors. The last time I ordered from one of them I got NO order tracking, NO answer to my email inquiring about the order, and finally got the CD I ordered about two weeks later. And that order was being shipped from a state bordering the one in which I live - a total distance of less than 500 miles! Funny thing about it, though. The package had a "shipping date" that was two days BEFORE I placed the order!?!?
I won't order anything from one of their "partners" ever again.
Oh, I installed the sequencer. No problem, just another step to getting what I wanted. What I was talking about was the average user who would have no clue what a shell script, "make" or "make install" were and how to use them.
For example, my brother and his wife (retired math teacher) would be left scratching their heads. My daughter (pharmacist) would say, "I don't have time for this crap!" My mother (retired banker) wouldn't even know where to start. My son could write the shell script.:)
It's been my experience that Joe Sixpack is willing to use one of the distros, but the first time he runs into trying to install a package that's not covered by that distro, he freaks out. If he has to compile the program, it's even worse and he quits and goes elsewhere.
I've run into that myself. I wanted to install a nice midi sequencer/notation editor on a Kubuntu system, but balked at having to compile it. Why should I have to? I can do it, and I have done it, but it's getting tiresome.
Want more users? Then make it easier for them. The typical computer owner is not as much in the know as we are.
I work in Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, and Tennessee. Never found a place where I didn't have a good signal. Tunnels are a problem, but we don't have very many of them around here. Oh, and the cover over the drive-thru at the bank blocks the signal, too.:) I've driven nearly 300 miles nonstop without losing one note of a song or one word in a sentence.
I agree. I drive constantly on my job across four states. XM/Sirius lets me listen to what I want to listen to regardless of where I am on the road. I go places where decent AM or FM stations are nowhere to be found, and a lot of my driving is at night when nothing much is available over the air.
It may not be worth it if your commute is only a half hour each way, but it's a bargain for me. My commute last week was 102 miles each way. Tomorrow it will be 95 miles each way. Plus I work out of my vehicle. I keep it on all day.
That's been our observation, too. It's so irritating I've been tempted to switch to another company. My AT&T Nokia phone interferes with damned near everything.

Make that,
We screwed up when we started letting artists define what art is. From their point of view, if we don't like what they make, then we're the dumb ones. Bullshit!
Stupid keyboard!:)

but what are the chances of the LHC creating a strangelet?
. . . before we all freeze to death!!

Asterisk looks interesting. Can you describe (one more time) your setup?
I think I'll drive my SUV 50 miles to buy one of these new monitors! Think of the energy I'll save if I use the new monitor for a thousand years.
:)
Or, just I could keep the one I have and turn it off when I'm not using it.
I like your new word "greenwashing".
Hey, I like Dvorak! His New World Symphony is awesome.
are still playing on the old Atari 2600. :)

but my refrigerator is closer if I want a drink.
Every important engagement always takes place at the junction of two or more map sheets.
Yeah, what's next? Screen doors?
I thought "Coca-Cola Zero" was a description of the taste.
Ah, but lighter weight fonts don't have the magical prefix "eco" in front of their names.

I'd give my right arm to be ambidextrous.
Psycho-babble.
I'm just reading through all these posts to find out who my friends are, and who my enemies may be. :)

Amen! TechTV still had a lot of potential when it was murdered by gamers.
