Actually, in daily use I find cassette tapes to be far more durable and less damage-prone than CDs. As long as I keep the heads clean and don't do something blatantly stupid (put it on a speaker, step on it), tapes are "listen-able" for years. Same goes for my LPs and 7"; I've got vinyl I listen to on a semi-regular basis that was pressed in the '70s, '80s and early '90s.
For a supposedly "durable", "permanent" format, CD's scratch and otherwise degrade far too readily.
> thought I was "licensing the content," not "buying the CD." Shouldn't I > be able to put my licensed content wherever I want?
Does anyone know where this "license" I supposedly agreed to by purchasing a CD can be found? I've checked every disc and CD liner in the house and can't find a license agreement anywhere. Or even a reference to a license.
.. it's not anything terribly exciting, at least not for Portlanders. The existing TriMet trip planner does most of the same functions, and has the added benefit of not being tied to Google Maps.
Google Maps is cool too, but for those of us who still use dialup (yes we still exist, even where broadband is available), it's slower than molasses in Antarctica. Because of the slowness, Google Maps itself is painful. Frapper is painful. And Google Transit, because it uses Google Maps, is painful.
I live in outer SE Portland and would love broadband, but I'm already existing on ramen & macaroni, and none of the PersonalTelcoProject access points are anywhere close, so dialup beats nothin'.
The highschool I went to pretty much *was* an on-campus police state when I attended it 12 years ago (pre-Columbine). Three week "drug" suspension over a jar of Folgers Crystals in my locker, "you're luck you're not being expelled".
Friend of mine expelled for having a Scout pocketknife on campus in a bag in his locker with his Scout uniform because he was heading to a troop fundraiser immediately after school.
Felony charges to a classmate over used 12ga shotgun shells in the back of his truck that was parked off-campus across the street.
This was in 1991. The Schools-As-A-Police-State is nothing new, only thing different is that now computers are involved as well.
My father (K6QXB) was telling me about this over Memorial Day weekend, but I'd had a bit much beer and don't remember much about it. Thanks for refreshing my memory,/.!
Way to miss the point. Way to read into it what you think he said.
every self-claimed conservative American should be jumping all over it as the gateway to a potential police state.
Looks to me like the OP is saying that real conservatives should be jumping all over those provisions to revoke them as being a bad idea BECAUSE of the potential for leading to a police state. As opposed to the self-proclaimed conservatives (who really *AREN'T*) who just love these kinds of easily-abused, liberty-destroying, unconstitutional provisions.
I figure if I sell one of mine off, I can use the money to influence the other. Neither of them listen to me right now because I don't have huge wads of cash to wave under their noses.
Nono.. GO to that Best Buy. Buy a spindle of blank CDs, a candybar, whatever. Just be sure to stop at your bank first and get some $2 bills.
In fact, I would encourage anyone who has to go to Best Buy (though I would strongly recommend against it if there is any choice other than Walmart) to pay with $2 bills. Partly as a form of protest, partly to encourage awareness and use of this often-ignored LEGAL CURRENCY
Until today, I hadn't bothered with trying to get a gmail account. My reasons were multiple:
1) I'm perfectly happy with my ISP's email service. Very little spam gets *to* *me* at that address, and what little does get through the ISP's filter is usually dealt with by my email filtering rules (go Eudora!).
2) I've got a Yahoo email address and a hotmail address. Those are used for online registration forms and whatnot. Ain't no way I use my primary email address for that stuff.
3) I never cared about the "l33t"ness of having a gmail account during the beta. It would've gone public sooner or later, and in the meantime why waste the effort tracking down "giveaway" invites or post pathetic whining pleas for an invite? Being l33t just doesn't matter to me.
Go ahead, take away my/. account or mod me as "troll" or "offtopic". See if I give a damn.:-)
The fact is a LOT of Americans are extremely partisan, and not well informed, and in particular a LOT of them are rabidly right wing partisans which is why talk radio is like it is and why FOX dominates an entire half of the cable news market.
I think there's a real chicken-and-egg situation buried in that statement. The big upswing in partisanship seems to have coincided with the explosion of right wing talk radio. There didn't seem (to me) to be the rabid partisanship and "us-versus-them" political outlook before that happened..
If your going to sleep with Bill Gates, you?re already somewhat dirty, so why not go all the way?
If by "all the way" you mean "give Bill a Hot Lunch and a Filthy Sanchez", then I'd be all for it.
I see lots of color in NoPo every day, mostly along MLK and (to a lesser degree) Interstate. And the area around SE 39th and Hawthorne is colorful in an.. interesting.. way.
It's funny when you're 12 (well, the first time anyways)
So how many times HAVE you been 12, anyway?
Yeah, my wife had her 39th birthday for the tenth time last month, but still.
For a supposedly "durable", "permanent" format, CD's scratch and otherwise degrade far too readily.
> We aren't enemies. Tell that to *them*.
I see you've met my wife.
You, sir, have obviously never worked the morning shift at a truck stop. Coffee going out the door by the gallon, and nary a white collar in sight.
Which is something many Slashdotters would no doubt find very useful. :-P
And Stallman isn't involved either.
Guess we need to start watching for the four horsemen.

*I* managed to see the humor, sarcastic as it was.
Relax, get out of the basement and find yourself a life. Quit taking this stuff so seriously; it's only the Internet.

Fark 'em.

When you see better computers than the one you're using at Goodwill/Salvation Army/St. Vincents .. it's time to upgrade.
Because there's no profit to be made by using the Australian system. And it's Not Invented Here(R).

But I could be wrong.
Seriously. 'cuz, y'know .. there are times when simply moderating as "funny" isn't good enough.

It's relative. In the Bay Area in the summertime, the humidity is just about nil. Compared to that, anything short of Death Valley is humid.
