The first computer I ever used was a TI/99, when I was in kindergarten (c 1983). Those machines hung around the school until I was in 3rd grade or so. I recall the gifted & talented teacher had a voice synthesizer program that went with it. I whiled away several class periods experimenting with it, trying to get it to say "Tyrannosaurus Rex."

How much of a difference can there be to move it from Florida to Houston versus from Edwards to Houston?
It never goes to Houston; that's just where the control room is. It launches and (if all goes as planned) lands in Florida. The difference is between towing it off the tarmac and into the repair building versus hoisting it onto a special 747, flying cross-country, hoisting it back off, then towing it into the facility.

The Nokia 3300 can use just about any mp3 as a ringtone. My current one is the sound of a telephone ringing.
Otherwise, the 3300 is pretty nifty, if unusual. It's shaped like the N-Gage, but doesn't require side-talking, and has a servicable calendar and browsing functions. Great for text massaging of all stripes, too.

  9. My Own Experience on Dealing with Internet Credit Card Fraud? · · Score: 2, Interesting

I have a MasterCard type debit card. Late last year, someone got ahold of it's info (including the 3-digit code form the back). I suspect that it may have been related to an insecure form I submitted for an online purchase. I noticed 2 charges that I didn't recall making on my (online) statement; they totaled a bit over $200. After contacting my bank, they suggested I first try to contact the businesses that charged the card, then come back to them if I had any difficulty. They assured me my maximum liability was $50, and issued me a new card with a new number. So, armed with a pair of phone numbers, I called the two businesses: one was a phone-card seller, and the other issued prepaid debit cards. In two weeks, all my funds had been returned. A few weeks later, my bank's investigations unit contacted me to ask if I knew anyone in Lansing, MI, where the charges had originated. I answered "no," as I'm not sure I've ever known a Michigander (or whatever). And that was the last I've heard of it. Scary, but not as awful as it might have been.

The free flow of information is all well and good, but the important service provided by most print journals is that they subject submissions to (supposedly) rigorous peer review. IANAS, but I imagine that such review might take some $ to accomplish. Will a researcher-pays system be inclined to look as closely at the articles submitted by its primary cash source?
