I'm glad to see a book on practical cryptography. I like reading about the theory behind how things work, but on the job when I'm working on websites and such I need a reliable way to protect sensitive information and not a bunch of words from theorists.
Hopefully this helps the good guys more then the bad ones though...
Here in the states the economics of being a programmer or anything in the IT industry is pretty bad, but from the article it seems Africa is much worse. We take most of their problems for granted here. I think this is a large problem for Americans, we don't really realize how good we have. The same thing can be said for gasoline, in Europe they are paying double, triple or more then what we are paying, even when we think its so "expensive".
I do believe there is a light at the end of the proverbial tunnel though for the Internet economy through out the whole world. We are coming to the point where computers are as common as televisions, and a computer really isn't a computer with out being able to access the Internet. This is going to redefine what we now know as a global economy. Borders are going to become looser, and ideas will be freely exchanged. Another thing is since the.dom crash many people have decided to switch careers, and thus the workflow is going to equalize, and I believe that is going to happen sooner rather then later.
This is probably a sign that the current administration has really bad cyber security plans. I know they really are not doing too much for homeland security too. They have all these billions of dollars, but it doesn't seem that it's going for any real protective measures.
People should try to get a grip on reality. There is no way to rewrite standards such as SMTP from scratch. Perhaps for military use, maybe. For the general global network of networks though its going to be pretty darn impossible.
Looking at other progressive moves to improve Internet technology is probably the best bet.
That was the weirdest thing. I thought I posting about a science fiction museum. It said it at the top and when I hit submit I see "The Case for Rebuilding The Internet From Scratch", is this a/. bug?
Very good point, also they probably have some deals they they are keeping their mouths shut about. When you are dealing with this kind of money I'm pretty sure they have a very good feeling about making a profit.
Also, I should clarify, not just cell phones, but all electronics should have better methods of recycling them. When you went out to buy that PS2, what happened with the PS died? Circuit boards have many elements that should not be in a standard landfill.
This type of technology could have some interesting applications. What I see though is having this thing take a lot of the "dirty work" away from regular workers. If devices such as electric meters could power themselves they could power a transmitter/cell phone device that can eliminate the need for meter readers to physically come out to each meter and record the readings. Also many places where people would prefer not to go, such as sewers and duct systems.
However I do not see this as replacing the AA battery any time soon.
Well you can always say life is a fad. On a theological scale I like to think of the ends of the movie MIB and MIB II. Where they open the locker and find that the entire world we know is really some small spec of dust in a much larger world. It's all in the perspective.
However related to technology I believe XML, and RSS being a type of XML are going to catch on and stay with us, much like HTML.
I'm not familiar with the book, but content syndication is a big thing on the Internet right now, and I can understand why. RSS and XML data feeds are popping up everywhere and the average John Doe user would like to be able to parse those feeds for his/her website(s).
I think the ability to easily transfer information in real time is just going to grow with time, this is not a fast fad.
Its too bad Napster had to do music sharing. The technology between P2P networks pionered by Napster was something though. This type of network along with open souce and GPL software, along with MD5 checksums could be a great combination.

This is a very important topic. My mother has a rabbit for a pet and she goes around telling elementry school students how they should tell their parents that they don't want a live rabbit.
Anyways the chocolate ones taste better:-)

Those were the days where all code was between H tags and every body thought blink was the coolest thing since sliced bread...
Who would have guessed that so much would change in a decade?
Hopefully this helps the good guys more then the bad ones though...

But then again I said the same thing about X-Men...

As much as I like a good conspiracy theory, I think its just /. taking a /.ing itself.

Just think what will happen if the software devlopment companies do not comply? They would be forced into it just because the user base alone.
After thinking of it some more it seems the most feasible option would be to connect to the standard POTS line such as a Tivo unit does.
