I know that they look better, but they don't look 40 bucks better than upconverted DVD in my opinion. especially when you are talking about older movies that sure as heck were not recorded in HD....why the hell would you pay triple for someone else to unconvert it when you can do it with your 80bucks DVD player? Then again, why buy and DVD? Personally, I would prefer to download it.

Well, the way I see it is these things NEVER will be ready until we just go ahead and build them to work out the kinks.
Take a look at WW2 and all the weapons which entered the battlefield which were totally unproven. Hell some were even only going to work in theory! The point is, you can not progress unless you put it out there.

Plus, I don't know how many of your fly RC planes, but I do a little and I can tell you...that stuff is not easy at all. I crash almost every time. However, I almost never crash driving an RC car. Why is that? 2D is a lot easier than 3D, thats why.

The way I see it, is that you would deploy a platform like this in a location where you would not want to send in real people. For that reason, you don't need to worry about the friendly fire problem because our guys would not be there anyways.
If there is even a 20% chance that an autobot could be put in front of bad guys and complete the mission, then fucking do it!!! Who cares how much it cost? Then again, I am one of those crazy liberals who value the lives of our troops more than the equipment in our arsenal.

  12. ...but it's close? on Google Maps GPS Simulator · · Score: 1

I don't think 1 km can really be considered close to gps. GPS needs to be "close enough" to tell you when you are coming to your exit at 140 kph. I still think that you can use this for basic by hand navigation. Just look for an intersection and then at least this tool will give you a smaller square in which to search for your present actual location. Then, you can set you location and ask how to get where you need to be. By no means can this replace a real navi, but in a pinch it can save your butt.

  13. Good job slashdot.. on China's First Lunar Satellite Sends Back Pictures · · Score: 0

First, I would like to point out that I am happy to see a lack of knee-jerk reactions to this news. By that I mean the typical, "anything foreign is crap and evil" posting that sometimes crop up around here. Secondly, I also hope that this puts some focus behind our own space program. Another poster mentioned that way back when, when the US went to the moon, NASA was solely focused on the task and thus was able to complete it in a reasonable amount of time. Over the years, NASA has no single goal, no drive and no focus. I believe that the individual employees at NASA are motivated and clever people who happed to work for a employer with no direction. Just imagine if your company had no plan at all, nothing you were trying to do, just several pet projects to work on and only a small portion of your companies monies going to it. You would be out of business in no time. Why should NASA be different? I am not saying NASA should have only 1 goal. I am saying that NASA should be linear. Put the resources behind a large goal and achieve it, then just keep a smaller amount of money there to maintain it while diverting the main bulk of the funding to the next major goal. Anyhow NASA..I say do that instead of what you are doing, since what you do now isnt working. Oh....and I say.. good job China. You have come a long way.

"A survey by King Research has found that Ninety percent of IT professionals have concerns using Vista, with compatibility, stability and cost being their key reasons. Interestingly, forty four percent of companies surveyed are considering switching to non-Windows operating systems........." That statement makes no sense at all. If you list compatibility as a big reason for not taking vista, but then say you think to switch to a non-windows OS which is completely incompatible with your current apps?? What gives? I am guessing like like my employer, most business rely on some kind of customer software suite. Something written for windows. In my case, its a special database management program. There is no chance it would work on a Mac or Linux (tries wine myself ;)). We have also tried it on vista and it does work, but not always. That is the reason we dont switch. That is the reason when we get a laptop with vista, we stick on XP pro and will continue to do so until windows 7.

  18. So not the point! on Shake a Secure Bluetooth Connection · · Score: 3, Insightful

This is just one more example that the guys in the Bluetooth SIG do not understand the problems that are really there with Bluetooth. I mean honestly, how many times does anyone pair with a second phone? I would say almost never. 99% of Bluetooth users are using it for headset profile, or to sync their handset to the the computer. We will see much more phone book access profile stuff coming from car kits which enable you to control your phone in a better way, but not phone to phone. I work with Bluetooth for a living, and it can even take me more than an hour to get a Bluetooth stack working properly on a PC. I have heard so many stories that people can get their PC to pair with the headset the first time, but after a reboot, or standby, forget about it. These "interoperability" issues are what holds the tech back. This and the bonding procedure.
