But seriously, I wish that NASA would just start spending money on actually trying stuff. Just go to the freakin moon and see what works. Stop messing around on jerk face LEO.
Seriously, whats the point of spending 2-400 bucks on a DVD player and then an additional 2--50 per movie? I know that they look better, but they don't look 40 bucks better than upconverted DVD in my opinion. especially when you are talking about older movies that sure as heck were not recorded in HD....why the hell would you pay triple for someone else to unconvert it when you can do it with your 80bucks DVD player?
Then again, why buy and DVD? Personally, I would prefer to download it.
I am really not that impressed. It's not much faster than the 8800 GT which is MUCH MUCH MUCH less expensive. I am sure you can pick up two 8800 GT's for the price of this card. Of course then you have to deal with the noise, but overall it looks to me that the price/performance ratio of this card is not that great.
"Autonomous ground vehicles aren't ready for deployment yet." Well, the way I see it is these things NEVER will be ready until we just go ahead and build them to work out the kinks. Take a look at WW2 and all the weapons which entered the battlefield which were totally unproven. Hell some were even only going to work in theory! The point is, you can not progress unless you put it out there.
Plus, I don't know how many of your fly RC planes, but I do a little and I can tell you...that stuff is not easy at all. I crash almost every time. However, I almost never crash driving an RC car. Why is that? 2D is a lot easier than 3D, thats why.
The way I see it, is that you would deploy a platform like this in a location where you would not want to send in real people. For that reason, you don't need to worry about the friendly fire problem because our guys would not be there anyways. If there is even a 20% chance that an autobot could be put in front of bad guys and complete the mission, then fucking do it!!! Who cares how much it cost? Then again, I am one of those crazy liberals who value the lives of our troops more than the equipment in our arsenal. I would love to see the day these things are settle by machines rather than American lives. Thats just me though,
That reminds me of my last company. Several people complained that they had to submit to cavity searches each day after work. Of course, it was not until much later that they found out the guy giving them was in no way affiliated with the company.;)
I don't think 1 km can really be considered close to gps. GPS needs to be "close enough" to tell you when you are coming to your exit at 140 kph.
I still think that you can use this for basic by hand navigation. Just look for an intersection and then at least this tool will give you a smaller square in which to search for your present actual location. Then, you can set you location and ask how to get where you need to be.
By no means can this replace a real navi, but in a pinch it can save your butt.
First, I would like to point out that I am happy to see a lack of knee-jerk reactions to this news. By that I mean the typical, "anything foreign is crap and evil" posting that sometimes crop up around here.
Secondly,
I also hope that this puts some focus behind our own space program.
Another poster mentioned that way back when, when the US went to the moon, NASA was solely focused on the task and thus was able to complete it in a reasonable amount of time.
Over the years, NASA has no single goal, no drive and no focus.
I believe that the individual employees at NASA are motivated and clever people who happed to work for a employer with no direction.
Just imagine if your company had no plan at all, nothing you were trying to do, just several pet projects to work on and only a small portion of your companies monies going to it. You would be out of business in no time. Why should NASA be different?
I am not saying NASA should have only 1 goal. I am saying that NASA should be linear. Put the resources behind a large goal and achieve it, then just keep a smaller amount of money there to maintain it while diverting the main bulk of the funding to the next major goal.
Anyhow NASA..I say do that instead of what you are doing, since what you do now isnt working.
Oh....and I say.. good job China. You have come a long way.
Anyone who has seen Clash of the Titans knows that this story is just silly. It was clear that giant scorpions were all over the entire region. There were not too many other giant insects, but there were swamps and robot owls....this much is clear.
you forgot one...
XP Pro... Keeps compatibility, you already have the license and you dont need to buy new hardware. Why switch?? There are no real reasons.
I mean really, can you imagine how many people would be killed when you have billions of honeybees employed to carry data packets around.
Also, I dont think it would be faster either. Just imagine the lag time when you connect to a server 1000 miles away. You would keep saying, "Oh man, hurry up you shitty bees!!"
"A survey by King Research has found that Ninety percent of IT professionals have concerns using Vista, with compatibility, stability and cost being their key reasons. Interestingly, forty four percent of companies surveyed are considering switching to non-Windows operating systems........."
That statement makes no sense at all. If you list compatibility as a big reason for not taking vista, but then say you think to switch to a non-windows OS which is completely incompatible with your current apps?? What gives?
I am guessing like like my employer, most business rely on some kind of customer software suite. Something written for windows. In my case, its a special database management program. There is no chance it would work on a Mac or Linux (tries wine myself;)). We have also tried it on vista and it does work, but not always. That is the reason we dont switch. That is the reason when we get a laptop with vista, we stick on XP pro and will continue to do so until windows 7.
This is just one more example that the guys in the Bluetooth SIG do not understand the problems that are really there with Bluetooth.
I mean honestly, how many times does anyone pair with a second phone? I would say almost never. 99% of Bluetooth users are using it for headset profile, or to sync their handset to the the computer. We will see much more phone book access profile stuff coming from car kits which enable you to control your phone in a better way, but not phone to phone.
I work with Bluetooth for a living, and it can even take me more than an hour to get a Bluetooth stack working properly on a PC.
I have heard so many stories that people can get their PC to pair with the headset the first time, but after a reboot, or standby, forget about it. These "interoperability" issues are what holds the tech back. This and the bonding procedure.
I mean honestly, stage6 has been doing this for a while. Not to mention on stage6 there is no size requirements, plus they are not so crazy on the copyright stuff. IMO youtube has gone downhill a bit. Seems like more often than not, a link is dead for copyright issues.:( Though back on topic, it will be nice to watch something on there that is still watchable at full screen.
I seriously doubt that sharks can survive in space for too long, and even if they could..it's exceedingly doubtful they would hold still enough to transmit data in this way. Get real.
These are amazing little guys. It's still a shame that we don't more things like this. It's terrible that we spend trillions of dollars to build militarys and almost zero on things like this which expand our knowledge for the betterment of us all.
I am sure there would lines around planet of people who would be happy to go on the mission to exchange the parts on these critters. Heck, I am sure there would be a ton of people who would love to go even if there was a 80% chance it would be a one way trip.
We can only hope a space race starts with China since we will only spend if it's counter a "threat" to our supremacy.
I mean really. Who the hell cares about this? Do you honestly trust these mega media giants to bring you the "real" news anyhow? I mean for the guy that turns on FOX news for his "no spin" news show is still going to get the program served up to him in the way he is used to while the rest of us who want to know whats really going on in our country and the world will do like we always to and turn to BBC or even spiegel.de to here about it.
Lets face it, the news in this country has not been real news in a long long long time and this new stance from the FCC is not going to change anything.
Americans will continue to get there spoon fed candy covered news....just the way they like it;)
I can not begin to tell you what a pain in the ass this was. You can not imagine how hard it is to tell your boss you are late for work because you are currently under siege from your the swat team. Totally messed up my morning.
Surprised no one said it until now, but how about you donate to the linux next month and donate to those much much less fortunate this month?
You just reminded me to cancel my netflix membership! I knew slashdot was good for something ;)
Step 1: Grow plant on moon
Step 2:?
Step 3: Profit.
But seriously, I wish that NASA would just start spending money on actually trying stuff. Just go to the freakin moon and see what works. Stop messing around on jerk face LEO.
Perhaps they understand that most folks, like myself, don't care about the OS, they care about the applications.

thats a lot of speed. Just don't bother using it to download..at least it will make those XP/Vista updates quicker ;)
I am really not that impressed. It's not much faster than the 8800 GT which is MUCH MUCH MUCH less expensive. I am sure you can pick up two 8800 GT's for the price of this card. I thought it was a reality TV show about life in a condom factory.
"........(if you do not drive in a binary manner)..." Apparently you have never experienced the thrill of digital driving. ;)

;)
Easy...just like our government inadvertently took away ever more of our freedom with the patriot act
Didnt they say they would do this a long time ago? How is this a story again?
