More seriously, perhaps the people in th US are finally realizing that animation isn't just for children.
perhaps you meant that people in the world are finally realizing this. the US has been responsible for shows like The Simpsons, Futurama, Family Guy and Beavis and Butthead (and more i am sure).
i don't know what country you're from, but it seems the US makes the best adult oriented animated shows. why do i think this? why, here in Russia i can see all the shows mentioned above. of course, the voice overdubs in Russian are sometimes lame, but oh well.
i've used redhat since 5.2 days, and i configure everything by hand. yes, there are graphical widgets to make it easier for the newbie, but that doesn't mean you have to use them.
let me clarify why i use Redhat. look, RPM is a common package type. if i'm looking for a good program for something, i can download this RPM and that RPM and install everything quickly. check it out, then unRPM it if it isn't what i'm looking for. no problem. with Debian, if the package isn't in apt's repository, then you have to compile it, only to find the package is crap and you remove it anyway.
poeple please tell me: other than a great package manager, what other positives are there to Debian? and wouldn't you consider Gentoo more for the export user than Debian? why is Debian better than Gentoo?
so far, i can count the Debian negatives: 1. outdated everything 2. package type not popular 3. cludgy installer 4. not great support (ximian?)
sure, Redhat is geared towards newbies: but you don't have to use the newbie tools to configure it. every single config i make to Redhat machines are with vi.
again i ask, besides a great package manager, what else can Debian offer me?
he sued the airlines after they denied him his flight while using his wearable computer system (he's worn one for 20 years). there was a slashdot story about it here.
On the other hand, I have designed and managed about 8 large scale pilots
about? so you mean 7? or maybe 3?
i have set up linux development teams for 2 corporate customers. I have used Ximian gnome and Red Carpet for both and they work superbly.
The Ximian Exchange Connector is not designed to be used on every single desktop in the company (although it could). Since many developers use linux, they aren't able to collaborate with the corporate windows folks. Ximian Connector allows them to connect to Exchange without having to install VM Ware to run Outlook, this saving them from tons of bloat.
Evolution, besides being a badly-implemented Outlook Clone, does not really offer me any unique solutions, and combined with the tight GNOME coupling, again makes for an uncompelling argument. god, i guess i feel like feeding the troll today... but Ximian Evolution has some very notable unique solutions. Virtual folders and extensive search capabilities are to name just a few. yes, Evolution is coupled with Gnome fairly well. you don't like this coupling, so you choose Outlook instead, which isn't coupled to anything, right? jeez... i'm actually wasting my time debunking all the FUD in this parent..
Moreover, any application that requires a 3k killscript, just to get the system back to a usable state when (not if, when) the application crashes, need to be taken out back and shot. several times.
when Evolution crashes, the system doesn't become unstable. Evolution is just broken until a kill script is activated. However, have you seen what happens when Outlook crashes? of course, everyone here has. the entire system is unstable and generally needs a reboot. no kill script can save the OS.
oh, if you're complaining about save options, etc, then you really haven't checked out gconf-editor, have you? thought not.
based on your post, i would sure as hell trust the original post than this parent, that's for damn sure.
i've met and talked at length with some of the biggest names in the business: Maddog, Torvalds, Stallman, even Redhat's Bob Young.
but i gotta tell you, the most pleasant experience i had was discussing the future of open source with the very humble Bruce Perens.
if you see Bruce at an expo or somewhere else, introduce yourself and have a chat. you won't be disappointed and i promise you will walk away a smarter person.
I've often wondered if there were a market for a service like this here in the US.
no doubt about it. our company GM Consulting specializes in using Linux for business to business commerce.
we have switched several small companies from windows to linux, both front and back ends. among them is a company we switched (10 workstations and 2 servers) completely over to linux with Ximian desktop. everything is linux, firewall, public web services. their internal app was written in PHP with MySQL. since their public website is also PHP, it utilizes same MySQL server for inventory control for online sales.
if you ever go into liquor store and see some poor dude cashing a check there, look close at their computer system for this: it utilizes MySQL, webcam and scanner and stores images for all transactions. we have deployed many of these check cashing tracking systems in southern California.
at our company, i've implented a good way to keep those outlook inboxes sanitized:
put your linux based sendmail server in the public view. as email comes in, spam filter it, virus check it and remove funny attachments. then pass whatever is left onto the exchange server for mailbox distributing.
personally, i would do without the exchange part, but you know corporate types.... they are the same people that say, "hey, shouldn't we purchase an Oracle license so we can put the company directory on there?"
perhaps the program uses the DNS "LOC" feature detailed in RFC1876, although i'm finding that most of the newer installed routers are missing this location information...
If I were to move, I'd live in one of the former Russian colonies (Czech Republic would be nice), where they haven't been free long enough to become arrogant, and where American pop culture hasn't penetrated very far.
well i can tell you that you're not going to find what you're looking for. i moved to Saint Petersburg, Russia 3 months ago (born and raised in Calfornia). when i'm in a busy public place, i don't dare utter a single english word in fear that i will be jumped immediately.
hell, even the MacDonalds down the street was broken into and vandalized in protest against the Americans...
George W was here 2 days ago. they limited where he could go outside because of fear of sniper fire...
Why not?/. already gives those with UIDs a louder voice than the anonymous coward; why shouldn't those who help pay for the site get a louder voice?
do you see no difference between something that is free and something that is not? i thought slashdot was all about giving everyone a chance to be heard, that is if your words are wise. with this subscription model, it's not about wise words, it's about who pays.
In RL, courtesy gives the host a slightly louder voice in a topic of conversation (especially one with thousdands of participants.) No reason the same can't be true on/.
do you consider someone who pays money to be automatically courteous? perhaps you are a subscriber?
according to the this story on CNN, the patch was "originally aimed at improving the security of Internet connections."
the only time security needs to be improved is when a security flaw or problem is found. and any problem dealing with the security of a internet connected computer should be considered urgent or critical.

top secret computers connected in a network configuration aren't connected to the outside. the networks i've seen aren't even connected to anything outside the very room these computers are kept.
in fact, each computer's network cable (bright blue) goes up the wall, to about 2 feet from the ceiling, then wraps around to a switch, also located near the ceiling.
the purpose of this is so one can immediately observe every network connected device by looking along the wall. this would prevent anyone from connecting an unauthorized system into the network.
yes, I also agree that the author's praise to winXP was a bit overdone. I use Linux for development, and winXP for everything else. sure, most times a single windows crashing app won't bring the entire system down, but how damn long are you left to wait while winXP is trying to figure out how to recover?
it's like, should i wait 2-10 minutes for winXP to sort itself out, or just punch the power and reboot?
a social event? you are correct. look folks, classical music is easy to obtain, even downloadable! then why is it every time i go to the orchestra, it's always jam packed?
after watching the Matrix in the theatre here in Saint Petersburg, Russia, imagine my surprise that upon taking the metro home, i saw a metro vender selling the mpeg4 CD for $2. full color cover and everything. as soon as i got home, it was already available on our apartment network. sheesh!
Microsoft has been distributing their Services for Unix software for some time now. If you will remember, the entire purpose they attended LinuxWorld last year was to show this product and even hand out free CD's to try.
Basically, Services for Unix runs on Windows and is designed to replace UNIX servers by offering some similiar services such has NFS and NIS. The idea here is for companies to gracefully migrate their servers away from UNIX and lock them into a MS products.
I just don't understand why Microsoft didn't purchase this license years ago when the Services for UNIX was first started.
I think the media is largely responsible for most people's opinions in this matter. I'm an American living in Europe now, but before leaving the States in late Feb, I remember watching the news with their,'yay yay go war' attitude. Having traveled thru France, Germany and now in Russia, I have been media blitzed into thinking the Americans are juvenile and that their 'invasion' was merely a selfish act.
it was so strange to call the States and talk to some of my extremely level-headed friends, only to find them glued to CNN, walking in circles and murmuring strange pro-war chants.
So, everyone should try this next time there is a world dispute on on particular isuue or another. First, read your local news. Then, read international news. Try to draw some sort of line down the middle of the two, and that's probably the most truth you will find.
More seriously, perhaps the people in th US are finally realizing that animation isn't just for children.

i find that the biggest adult Harry Potter fans are the ones that never experienced good fantasy books as a youngster.
all of my friends that have read Eddings, Jordan and Salvatore or even the Shannara series gererally do not like the Harry Potter books.
next time you meet a Harry Potter obsessed adult, ask them what other fantasy books they've read. i'm willing to bet there aren't many who have.

yes, our website is 4 years old and written by our sales manager. i am not making an excuses, other than i've been too busy to make changes.
i am just happy that you've resorted to finding something inanimate to attack otherwise i would have expected some sort of wisecrack about my mother.
