  2. Still prefer paper on eBooks - What's Holding You Back? · · Score: 1

I do a lot of reading for the degree I'm taking at university, so let me take a shot at this (and I always read e-books which are in the same or similar feel). For this explanation, I'll use a PDF-file interchangeably with an e-book though they are different formats.

    1) Form factor. Give me something I can hold in my hands as a reader which displays full pages.
    2) Screen type on my computer doesn't matter much. I thought having a 19" LCD would make reading easier. It does, but I still print out the majority of stuff.
    3) I find I process (read, highlight, understand) the information better in paper format that I do in an e-book. Acrobat reader with highlighting is better, but the highlighting process is too vectorized (not a word I know) -- but everything with it feels like your typing too much and not enough like a pen-and-paper feel to it.

Make it feel more like paper and I'm all for it. And I'll save a few trees every year -- and gobble lots of power instead ;)

  3. OEM strategy on No EFI Support for Vista · · Score: 1

I think the way MS wants to include EFI support is through large OEM licenced resellers of Vista (Dell, HP, Compaq). This way, when you buy a new system with EFI, you get support bundled in. If this is the case, what will happen to independent system builders? Will the OEM copy of Vista be avilable to smaller builders?

And if this isn't the case, I can envision an updated version of Vista (e.g. like 95 OSR2, Win 98 ME) with support for that and other hardware which can't be had with patches.

  4. Go Hi[gher]-Tech on Movies Losing Popularity at Box Office · · Score: 1

Hollywood dumps a lot of money into special effects. I think to increase the theater going audience, they have to introduce more hi-tech innovations to make the movie going experience more appealing. The IMax experience is really a joy to watch. How about 3-D glasses the audience can put on to watch the movie?

If they want to revive the industry, they have to give their audience something different than what they can get at home. I like going out to watch a movie, but I go on 1/2-off night. And one theater - with not as good sound always has tickets for $4 in my city. Go there all the time for that. Its cheaper than renting!

Besides the spying part, I don't understand (its office policitics, I know) the reasoning for 'safely' approaching your employer. I don't think its fair to say that because someone disagrees with a policy and points it out nicely, they should be afraid of losing their job or having it noted on a file. We live in a world where the idiot who thought of installing the CCTV sans employee permission is -allowed- to keep their job.

  6. Re:Putting my feet up on Sony Announces Date for Blu-Ray Roll Out · · Score: 1

Don't get me wrong, the LOTR movie are really, really, cool. There's still tons of movies out there that are great. A few of my favortie action movies were made in the last few years (Zatoichi anyone?). But the movie watching experience hasn't changed. Its still a 2-D image with 2.1, 5.1 or 7.1 sound. Better sound has made a bit of a difference. As have the nice widescreens. But nothing big has really happened. Not that I'm expecting 3-d picutres in the house in the next 6 months, 24 months or whatever. Just that I think this would be the next viewing experience I would invest money in. Think I might get a wide-screen HDTV CRT TV though.

But when you have to spend 2 to 3k (which I can budget) only to see and hear the *same* content only its higher-res, to me its not worth it.

  7. Putting my feet up on Sony Announces Date for Blu-Ray Roll Out · · Score: 3, Insightful

Frankly, I'm going to just sit back and watch others get ripped off while the format wars start. I have not seen one compelling movie in the last 3 or 4 years so why would I want to see the same bad content only at a higher resolution for a significantly higher cost? Or maybe, its just that I like music more then movies. I'll buy a $2000 stereo system but not $2000 on a TV + disc player.

Heck, at the prices they're offered now, I might buy a few DVD players in case they decide to discontinue them for something with extra copy protection crap I never asked for. At least I'll be able to play plain-old music CDs, MP3 CDs and DVDs and the DVD movies I bought.

  8. Artists aren't getting the Money on Canada's CD Tax Out of Hand? · · Score: 1

If I recall, another problem with this levy is that its supposed purpose - to collect funds and give them to Canadian artists is being hoarded by CIRA. Something which isn't supposed to happen. And its taken a long time for artist to get paid if at all (I'm sure the money is only going dispraportionately to more "popular" artist).

The other problem with this argument, is that the collection of funds is being used to protect Canadian artists. Frankly, there's only two or three Canadian singers (contemporary) that I actually listen to. I don't download - let alone listen to other Canadian artists, most albums are like the rest of the music industry. I don't want to give money to bad artists simply because I want to backup my university work or my webpage (for which I've done all the work), or make mix CDs of albums I already own.

I'd concur: some of the monies should go to software developers and book publishers. Maybe they can start a turf war with CIRA. So long as I don't pay more.

  10. Use your warranty to its advantage on HD DVD to Screw Early HDTV Adopters · · Score: 1

While the fault is entirely that of the content producers, wouldn't an easy way to "fix" this problem for the early adopters be a way to have the televison set expire prematurely? Surely if the TV burns out early and is still under warranty, then it should be replaced with a newer tv which should meet the requriements. Not that anyone would damage the TV on purpose.

Instead though, maybe everyone should organize a mass buy HD-DVD protest campaign. Us they won't listen to. Have a couple million people call, wrtie, e-mail in complaint to the content producers, and we might actually get somewhere.

This is one reason why I've made no plans on updating my TV. I'm even re-considering why I'm buying DVDs or CDs right now.

That Apple will ship revised units every month or so? Or, does it simply mean that having switched to Intel processors, we will see Apple have more version bumps in their systems say every quarter?

I bought an iMac G5 (rev B) last year. I'm not the least bit concerned about the switch since the Intel systems are still under the first batch. Not only might some hardware issues creep up, but there's still the performance hit from not having native intel-only binaries for a lot of the programs. By the time my Applecare (3 yr) runs out on this system, I *might* consider an upgrade. Depends on if I really need to upgrade my software and OS (10.5 better have some really good features).

I would suggest instead to find a new job first knowing your job has nothing to do with filing patents. You might even want to ask the question if this is part of your job responsibilities in the interview (or not ... probably better not to as this might be a question asked of your references). When your current employer asks you why you're leaving after giving the two weeks notice, simply say you're moving to another, more challenging role.

Check around.

You might find that in pooling all your resources together, you can find one or two techs you trust to do all the administrative tasks. You should get a better quality person in the end since they're virtually 'guaranteed' the hours to fullfill the tasks in the area. I like wine and hope it doesn't devalue the market much if this comes into existence.

While I hope the same doesn't happen to sake, perhpaps, it will make it more popular. The problem with drinking sake outside of Japan, or at least in my experience in purchasing it in Canada, is that it is very expensive. There are $10 - $15 bottles which often taste like piss. The flavor is too strong (quite bitter actually) and over-powering when compared to the other (generally more expensive) sake. Though I've found some good ones for $15 or so.

The more expensive sake goes through more processing so its more expensive. I've found some very nice wine for $10 or $15 some made in Europe, others in North America and abroad. I like wine and its easy to tell the poorly made stuff from the good. I avoid the $40+ bottles for money and value.

Wine is made in many countries and is not exclusive to one country. Sake is AFAIK made only in Japan so it means that it is more expensive than more other liquors. Maybe this 'ageing machine' if it exists can lower the cost of some sake.
