I was going to say basically the same thing. WOW, does he have high standards! You can EASILY play Quake III Arena or Unreal Tournament (heck, even UT 2003)! Some people just can't get by on 100 frames per second...:^)
The FT actually refers to Saudi Arabia as a poor country! Hey FT, SA has the LARGEST supply of Oil in the world! Per capita, they are one of the RICHEST countries! Get your damn facts straight. How can you take that article seriously when they start out with such a BLATANT factual error?
As for the idea of the UN running anything, PLEASE! They screw up everything they control. They want control to STIFLE it and TAX it. If it ain't broke (and it ain't), don't fix it (ie, RUIN IT)! If you think the RIAA is bad, give the UN control of the Internet!
If he wanted to, he could have slapped the same LaserDisc version on DVD and made some quick bucks and then come back later and revised it to his liking. We all know there will be multiple versions anyway. He likes to tinker. Thank GOD that some of the old school directors didn't do that. Can you imagine things like Citizen Kane being revised to add CGI characters!
to get a 100% compatible system I have to move to Europe? I'm sorry, but I can't justify that.:^)
I thought the version I used had potential, although some of my hardware wouldn't work. The OS loads REAL fast. I liked that... Oh well, maybe eventually we will get systems like this in the U.S.
as long as SOMEONE does! The claim that a companies 1st amendment rights [SIC] are violated is specious. Nobody has the right to harass someone, which is of course what this is all about. Just because I have a telephone, it doesn't give you the right to call me. If your product was so great, and I needed it, I would find you! Hard selling may work in the short term, but you will not get repeat business this way. You will ALWAYS have to keep finding new customers, which means MORE work.
have to recall mine too? They just recalled the real Segway's because they (SURPRISE) don't work when the battery runs down! Yeah, and my car doesn't work when it runs out of gasoline either...:^)
shipping (okay, sometimes YOU don't, but the company covers it). I know! I've run a mail- order business for 10 years, selling over the Internet (first via Usenet, then my own web site, Yahoo auctions, BidVille and now eBay). I use the USPS for shipping. Every customer pays a fee set by the USPS. There are USPS employees in each State of the Union. Those employees ALL pay local, State and Federal taxes, that if they did not work for the USPS they might not be able to pay. If I didn't ship so many items, some or all of them might be out of work and unable to pay those taxes! I also pay local, State and Federal taxes based on my income. I also buy products from a supplier, whose employees all do the same thing.
In addition, as a registered vendor in my State, I collect State sales tax on IN STATE sales. I will, however, NEVER collect sales tax for other States. If it should come to that, I will close down, and find another way to make a living (I've been thinking about playing Poker for a living anyway; no inventory or shipping or paperwork involved).:^)
These politicians are simply GREEDY. They can never EVER get enough of YOUR money to satisfy them, and their endless desire to SPEND SPEND SPEND!
Very fair! I try to read the article, only to be greeted with the smallest font ever created, and some jackass moderates me down because I mention it! Okay, fine. I will eventually get to moderate again. The last time I let it slide and didn't use the points. Next time, I'm going to use them, FOR SURE! Off Topic my ass! I've had it with this crap!
The font used on the page is TINY and I'm sorry, but if I have to mess around with changing fonts just to read something, screw it! It sounded interesting though...
Sorry for the caps... Seriously, ever since I began selling on eBay the two e-mail accounts I use for that have been drenched in Spam. I'm getting 10 copies of the Swen/Swan thing each day! Just list something cheap, and include your e-mail account. They WILL find you!:^)
I like Linux (and would use a Mac if they were cheaper), but geez! If everyone used the same OS (like, say...Windows) then the bad people would attack them there. If we all switched to a new OS, the bad people will switch too. The OS doesn't make them evil, they were evil before they got a computer!
follow up with several clever FAKE bounced e-mails also containing it. I've been getting about 10 per day (total) for the last 3-4 days now, at an e-mail address I use to sell on eBay. The "patch" e-mail looks very real, but of course I'm not stupid, and the e-mail address is obviously fake. I NEVER open e-mail any way but as straight ASCII text, no matter who it is from. And I NEVER open attachments, from ANYONE!
I should mention that while in college, I had the pleasant opportunity to meet an Indian fellow who was in my Russian class. Very nice guy, we studied together a few times. Tough class! His family had come to the USA only a few years prior. He introduced me to some Indian snack foods that I still enjoy.
we here in the USA should adopt the same policy. Indians (people from India), should be welcome to come here for vacation, but not to work. And US companies should stop outsourcing their work to India.
Before you moderate me down, know this: my mother in a LEGAL immigrant from Eastern Europe. I have NO problem with people coming here LEGALLY! She had to wait, YEARS, then she came here (not speaking ANY English) and she learned the language. She became a VERY succesful businesswoman. These people are NOT better than my mother, and they should not be treated in a special manner!
I do however have a big problem with ILLEGALS (and I ain't talking about sick birds), and I also have a big problem with India's policy, if it is true.
If we here in the USA did adopt their policy, we would be labeled as racist. Pot, Kettle, Black. India, you are racist (but I like your food)!
when a court informs us that we do not have the right to control the ads that are placed and viewed on our own web sites. I understand that this is a third-party software, that the web site viewer is using, but wow! Isn't there some way for web sites to temporarily block these, just like f***microsoft.org can block me when I'm using my Windoze box? Or like some sites block you from viewing them if you have a pop-up blocker running? As someone who owns a business and has a web site for same, I find it objectionable that ads for a rival could be viewed by my customers... Luckily, for me, those with bigger guns (ie, LOTS of money) are fighting this thing.
is going to suck. I remember typing in LONG programs, and sometimes losing data because I forgot to save to diskette sometimes. With this you don't even have that option. I give this guy (a local to me) an A for effort, but without even a cassette interface (and those stunk), you are S.O.L.
I'm in favor of FREE stuff, if it is given up willingly by the creator/owner. The quote at the end of your post ("Progress has value only if it is shared by all -- slogan of SNCF [French Railways]") sounds like socialism to me...
If someone creates something, ANYTHING, and wants to be paid for it, that is their right. If someone creates something, ANYTHING, and wants to give it away for FREE, great! What we don't need is a bunch of people forcing others to do something, just because they believe in it.
And for the record, I don't like Mr. Gates any more than you do.:^) I went to buy a new notebook computer last week, and found one I REALLY liked (Toshiba P25-S607, SWEEEET), but I passed, not because of the price ($2500), but because it had an Intel processer and ran on Windows XP Media Center. I just can't bring myself to back either company (Micro$oft for obvious reasons, and Intel for their underhanded use of serial numbers dating back to the introduction of the Pentium 3).
As for the Apple I, I'd love to own one. I still own my first computer (Apple II+) as well as an Apple IIe, IIc and IIgs.
As his legal guardians, the parents are not required to have his permission or cooperation to file on his behalf... They are acting in what they feel is the best interest of their child. Who are you to question that?
Backward masking in heavy metal music, fat in food, gun makers instead of the crimals who misuse the product, customers who spill hot coffee on themselves blaming McDonalds, and the list goes on and on. Now we have parents blaming a video game for their own failings in raising their children and teaching them right from wrong. I've got no answers. I just find it all stupid.
I would still have to sell my house to buy one (while I'd only have to sell my car to buy the PC). Okay, so I have a crappy house, and a crappy car, still...:^)
It boggles my mind why Apple insists on pricing their equipment as they do. I STILL own an Apple II+, IIe, IIc and IIgs, so I am NOT anti-Apple. But I also own a business, and I know that you increase sales, and profit, by lowering price and CAPTURING MORE OF THE MARKET. Why does Apple not know this simply truth? What good does it do to be perpetually at 10% of the computer market? Running ads saying how easy it is to adjust to a switch in computer formats is wonderful, but try reducing your prices, which will increase your customer base when more people can AFFORD to make the switch!
Regarding the story of origin, the performance (G5 vs. Xeon) sounds great.
