  1. Re:Linux on What Did You Change Your Mind About in 2007? · · Score: 1

I concur. Though, as a blind fly bumping into walls, I have taken a rather indirect approach.

I have switched from XP to Vista, which made my life miserable. Then from Vista to Ubuntu 7.10. Then Fedora 8. Then back to Ubuntu.

I only planned to run it on one computer (my laptop). But, one morning I turned on my desktop XP machine and it gave a billion errors about how SVCHOST.exe could not write to a memory address. I also noticed that firefox was never being updated since 99% of the time it ran under a limited account, and unlike Vista, there is no UAC to prompt for an admin user/password.

After that fuss, all the computers in my house run Ubuntu.

I remember watching a Channel9 video. If my memory does not deceive me, Microsoft have 4-6 people working on IE7, and most of their work was to fix bugs, mostly security, and change the interface. With so few resources given to IE after it has been neglected for many years, one cannot expect Microsoft to provide a decent browser. Based on the fixes (CSS, transparent PNG, etc.), IE is moving into the right direction. However, as we all know, they tied it with Windows releases. Assuming that IE8 will be at the same standards support or better than Opera/Firefox and further assuming that the next version of Windows is released 3-5 years after Longhorn (Vista), IE8 is very far away. For a web designer, which I am, IE is a hell. For programmers, think of sending a compiler valid code, and instead of generating the executable properly, it generates rubbish, or it whines that proper syntax is invalid, or it generates 2+2=5.

Opera also introduced tabbed browsing and other cool features since adopted by Firefox but not, as yet, implemented by Microsoft.
I'm not sure if it is his poor sentence structure or if he is trying to imply that Opera copied Firefox's tabs. Opera was the first to have tabs in Opera 6.0 (many years ago).

Curiously, Opera is already designed to appear to Web sites as Internet Explorer. This feature was added to prevent sites from blocking non-Microsoft browsers from capturing data and downloading.
Dvorak, do your homework; Opera 9.0 (soon to be released) identifies as Opera.

Furthermore, Google is supposed to buy Opera, not Microsoft, and personally, I would preffer if Google buys it. If Microsoft buys it, they'll have to strip it dry and take only the rendering engine because they have Outlook Express and Outlook. They can't show that Opera and Gmail (Google copied Opera) have a better eMail client.

When XBOX 360 comes out, check to see if the XBMC is good enough for what you need before paying $500-$800 (guesstimate). I would also wait to see what GameCube 2.0 and PlayStation 3 have to offer before buying an XBOX 360.

  24. Re:Good news also has bad news on Battlestar Galactica Season 2 This Summer · · Score: 2, Funny

A lesson in economics about marginal benefit, marginal cost, total utility, marginal utility, and opportunity cost.

Opportunity cost is what you give while doing an activity. The opportunity cost of watching anime is sex. The opportunity cost of sex is watching anime. Marginal benefit is the benefit you get of an additional unit of sex or one additional unit of anime. The marginal cost is the opportunity cost of that additional unit.

If the marginal benefit is greater than the marginal cost, do it. If the marginal cost is greater than the marginal benefit, do not do it.

Utility is the feeling good points you give to an activity.

The first time you had sex with your girlfriend the marginal utility was 500. The second time, it was 450. The third time 400, and so on. As you can see, there are diminishing returns. The second time is not as good as the first. The third time is not as good as the second, etc. At this point. Your total utility of sex is 500+450+400 = 1350. If that marginal utility gets close to 0, go back to watching anime. You don't want it to get into negative. You know, sex gets boring with the same person after a while.

There is a little bit more to the microeconomic terms I gave you; look them up if you want a deeper insight. I would have told you more, but I got to go home.
