  1. This Technology on Walmart Stored Value Cards Compromised · · Score: 1

Tons of companies use a similar technology that dials in to activate such gift cards. It would be interesting to tap the lines of these businesses or even their central command centers and decode this information for personal gain. One wouldn't even have to work on the inside.

  2. Groovey on X.org Making Fast Progress · · Score: 4, Funny

Now we can start to look as much like OSX as possible. Very pretty. Now we just need to wait for Adobe and Macromedia to endorse Linux and it'll steal the graphic design folks from Apple.

  3. Lap Heat on IBM Recalls 553,000 Laptop Power Units · · Score: 2, Insightful

Laptop reviews should include bottom temperatures for "lap" users.

  4. Over Promises on Broadband Envy: Fixing American Broadband · · Score: 1

The fact is that most of the things that sold the early adopters on broadband years ago still haven't come to fruition. Granted, broadband is more adopted than dial-up now, but its more for convenience (not having to dial in all the time), cost-effectiveness (not having to pay for an extra phone line and internet service), and speed (anything is better than AOL). But whatever happened to internet television? How about widely-accessible VoIP that integrates with your home's internet phone network? Devices that employ the internet for practical purposes, making your life easier? If anything I'm just using broadband to get porn at the speed of light.

  7. Trolls on Microsoft Opens MSN Music Store · · Score: 1

That FAQ is the biggest troll I've ever seen Microsoft do as a wham-oh against Apple. That would be like expecting Windows Media Player to support Apple's iTunes purchased music and since that isn't the case that we should all be beating down Microsoft's door with flaming torches to push for such a change.

  8. Newton's Delete & Copy/Paste Functions on Palmtop Nirvana? · · Score: 1

The one thing I really miss on my Palm device is the Newton's old scribble to delete and drag to the side to copy and drag into a document to paste. In fact, I wouldn't mind seeing the drag copy-paste on my desktop. The coolest bit was that you could drag multiple items to the side so you can have several clipboard items floating around at the same time (which was really convenient since you could only have one full-screen app active at the same time).

  9. Bloggers on Apple Launches iTunes Affiliate Program · · Score: 3, Interesting

This will be great for bloggers, I'm already scoring a few bucks a month from Amazon for this sort of thing, but a live list of what I'm listening to could be absolutely devine for affiliate commissions.

  10. Re:Links to the Alphas buried? on Mozilla.org Relaunched · · Score: 1

Most likely because they want to look like most of the other software sites on the net and be recognized not as an "unstable" Netscape but as a product in its own right.

  11. Chart Inflation on BBC Launches Downloaded Music Charts · · Score: 4, Interesting

This will help online music sales in the long run but it will cause the same effect as "top sellers" in the CD market. Of course they're top sellers and they will continue to be since they're the most played music on the radio. That's why radio stations should promote new and notable artists instead of the same crap we've heard for the last three months, maybe that would help artists and encourage a better rotation on the air waves.

  12. How can it be a killer? on Rio Reveals iPod Mini Slayer · · Score: 2, Insightful

How can this be an iPod killer if only 500 are availible? Not only will it be low yield, low profit, but it doesn't stand a chance of being widely accepted. I highly doubt people will drop their iPod Mini to grab one of these things. It's not an iPod Mini killer, it simply cannot be.

  13. Whatever happened on Secret Service Seeks Indymedia Logs · · Score: 3, Insightful

to real protesting? Whatever happened to actually telling the people what's really going on in the shadows and giving the public a REAL reason to vote for or against a cause. Now, we're just terrorists in our own country.

I haven't seen a single political ad that discusses the truth or isn't hyperbole. It's too bad the people of America are too dumb to research politics themselves and not buy into this advertisement bull shit.

  14. Visualizations on Apple iPod with Video and WiFi Capabilities? · · Score: 1

Is it not also possible that Apple simply wants to add visualizations to the screen while music is playing? It seems logical that they would extend this feature to the portable player if it ever sported a nice color LCD. Imagine how much more attention their products would attract while walking down the street if they were a mobile acid trip.

  16. Gmail Notifier on Gmail Cracks Down on Third-Party Notifiers · · Score: 1

  17. SPAM Application on LOAF - Distributed Social Networking Over Email · · Score: 2, Interesting

What would be great is to use this as a SPAM fighting measure. Just apply fewer points to a message that comes from a "real person" or "friend" on the network based upon their closeness to you in the social network thus reducing the possibility of the message going into the Junk box. Or, why not use the same concept to create "networks" of Spammers. So when you get a message, add them to the spam network and apply points to the message to consider it SPAM that way there's a global list spammers that could potentially weed them all out.

  19. Re:StarCraft on Which Classic Games Have Aged Well? · · Score: 1

It's related to how the Warcraft III engine doesn't support a great deal of units in its current state. They instituted unit limits because of hardware limitations and don't want to try a new starcraft until it can at least support as many as the old version. That was the official rag from Blizzard anyway.

  20. Service on FCC Says TiVo Owners Can Share Shows · · Score: 1

Why doesn't someone hook up analog cable to a bunch of these new Interet-aware Tivos and rent out the "friends" list for a monthly fee online. Each person gets a time share of when they want to watch a show and the machine will record it for them and broadcast it on the internet at their convenience. For $25 a month I'd like to watch all the shows I would otherwise miss.

  21. Re:Obligatory Dvorak post on Is Typing a Necessary Skill? · · Score: 1

I learned Dvorak over spring break last year and I'll never go back. I type faster and my hands don't get sore as quickly. I love it.

  22. Dvorak on Is Typing a Necessary Skill? · · Score: 2, Interesting

I use Dvorak for all my day-to-day typing. I wish schools would teach that since I'm in the mid hundreds now with decent acuracy. It's liberating to be able to type just as fast as I can think without having to worry about thinking slower and thereby losing potential thoughts. Starting in the schools and working outward to employers etc would surely make my life easier and typists everywhere who feel limited by QWERTY's reign.

  23. Re:Battery life question on Sony's "iPod killer" Fails to Draw Blood · · Score: 2, Informative

  24. Sony's Business Model on Sony's "iPod killer" Fails to Draw Blood · · Score: 3, Interesting

Sony will continue to compete despite the market's lack of adoption. They're still working on the minidisc format even when it's poorly accepted in the American market and most people prefer solid state or hard drive players. Not just that but a lot of people are getting fed up with Sony's recent lack of quality since they shifted a huge amount of their production to China. The PS2's disc read error is one such error and it's put me off from purchasing the PSP until at least a year after it comes out just to be sure there aren't any similar issues there. I wouldn't trust Sony's products farther than I could throw them.
