They're going to have
mirrors, snapshots, backups, offsite backups, remote replication... Expecting
them to purge your email when you delete your account is crazy.
Not according to the blog mentioned in this
Slashdot article. Basically, it appears
as though Google has implemented its own distributed
file system which stores your data in three different places and runs on
100,000 very cheap computers. Can you
imagine having full or even incremental backups of the data on 100,000
servers? Can you imagine mirroring
100,000 servers? Neither can I. However, I can
imagine having my data on 3 of the 100,000 servers and designing the file system
so that it replicates deletions of my e-mail.
I pretty much agree with the parent. Here is why. First, Take a look at this. It, basically, summs up a nice study that pretty much proves that as the government grows so does unemployment. So, if a consumption tax was to be implemented, there would be less of a need for IRS agents. The goverment would shrink (in an ideal world) and there would be more jobs for everyone. If there are more jobs for everyone (assuming perfect competition for the now more scarce resource of labor), then wages will increase as well. Too bad it will never happen.
OK, I'll bite. There is a difference between a digital broadcast and high definition. Yes, using compression, you can digitally broadcast more channels in the same bandwidth that you used to use for one analogue channel. However, a "high definition" broadcast is pretty much standardized. Therefore, a high definition broadcast will not suffer from the same kinds of artifacts that you are describing. It will be beautiful, even during those fast action scenes. The high definition video signal contains more detail, and as a result, looks better than a progressive scan DVD.
I really wish that I could mod this down to a -1 Troll. It IS his hardware. He paid for it. He owns it. He didn't design it. However, it is his. You did not design the car you drive. But, onece paid for, it IS yours. Ford doesn't come to your house in the middle of the night and rotate your tires for you do they? Better yet, if there is a major flaw with your car they don't come out and fix it in the middle of the night like a bunch of friendly little elves. They send you a notice and then you have to give them permission to fix it by actually responding to the notice (by brining your car in).
Well, here is NetFlix's canned response to my question (By the way, I think that I love Emily. She is so clear and decise. I almost believe her).
Original Message Follows:
Would you please forward this to someone "in the know" and kindly ask
them to respond as to whether or not the main idea of this web page is
true or not?

Hello Sean,
Thanks for your message. I apologize for any misunderstanding. The
quality of service a subscriber receives is not determined by the size
of program, or length of membership. All subscribers are treated
equally, including those on free trials. If Netflix chose to limit the
types and amounts of movies that customers could rent, we would not open
Distribution Centers throughout the country.
When a newly released movie becomes available for shipping, it is
immediately placed in the "Available" status. This is because the status
is estimated according to overall inventory. Once we begin shipping the
new releases according to its corresponding queue, the inventory status
is updated.
Please remember due to constant inventory fluctuation, all inventory
information should only be used as an approximation. This is why we are
unable to guarantee that a specific title will be in stock. Rather, if
your top choice isn't immediately available, we often wait to see
whether another customer returns a copy of that title. If, after 24
hours, we still haven't received a copy, we'll send your next available
choice.
Please note that all expected "wait" designations are simply estimated
according to overall demand and are not dynamic to each individual
customer. In other words, a title that is flagged "short wait," may
nevertheless ship to you immediately upon receipt of your DVD rental.
There are overall estimated "short wait", "long wait" and "very long
wait" status designations, but these do not indicate the exact position
for you in regards to receiving this title.
To have a title that is listed on a wait status shipped to you, three
criteria must be met:
1) We must have an actual copy of the movie.
2) You made a recent return, and have an open slot for the shipment of
another rental.
3) You are the highest person on the "Virtual Waiting List" who meets
the two requirements above.
So, keeping in mind that we will always ship titles from the top of your
rental queue, it is possible that while a copy had come in it was listed
far down on your list. Therefore it may have been sent to another
customer, while you were shipped the title at the top of your rental
queue. Also, if the above three criteria did not happen at roughly the
same time, then the title is shipped to the next subscriber who meets
the aforementioned criteria.
Please be advised we continue to process returns as they are delivered
to us by the USPS. The warehouse is only limited in that it is not a 24
hour facility, and they do not work on weekends or holidays. Review of
your account indicates you rent an average of 10 movies a month which is
excellent. We hope you continue to see the benefits of unlimited rentals
with no due dates or late fees! If you have any further questions or
concerns, please feel free to contact us.
Thanks,
Emily

Feel free to mod me down for this comment beacause the only way for me to get Karma is to buy it. But, UHF is one of the best movies of all time! Staly Spidowski's Funhouse RULES! And those two time-filling, long-chinned, twins with their "oway oway owayo!" What a movie!
I just sent an e-mail to netflix asking them to forward my e-mail to someone "in the know" and have them respond as to whether or not the main idea of the web page referenced in the Slashdot article is true or not.
My company uses plugins that rely on Microsoft's bastardized Virual Machines. My question is this: What are we as a company going to have to do to get compatible with Sun's Version of Java? Are each of our vendors (Ariba,Plan View, etc.) going to have to come up with patches to their systems to allow clients with Sun's VM to connect. Not only that, but will we not also have to push this new compatible VM to all of our desktop systems?
Sean----Trolling for info. It would be appreciated.
If anything, his examples prove that we need a national cybersecurity enforcement agency, which is responsible for taking machines offline when they get virus-infected.
IMHO, the last thing that we need is ANOTHER government agency. Better yet, we do not need another government agency with the citizen granted authority to act like Big Brother. Personally, I would rather have some rogue sysadmin (who probably has some real world skills)messing with my system than some under qualified goverment suit. Hell, I would rather have somoe script kiddie messing with my system than Big Brother.
This is going to be my fist post to Slashdot in a long time. However, this topic is near and dear to my heart. In college, I once wrote a major paper on this very issue. I got a D- on it. Why did I get a D-? Because (even though I was very liberal at the time) my ultra liberal college professor did not agree with my findings. Hell, I did not want to agree with my findings. After much research, however, I came to the conclusion regarding guns the Dennis Leary came to with drugs...NOT LESS GUNS MORE GUNS...MORE GUNS IN THE HANDS OF RESPONSIBLE CITIZENS. Here is what I found.
1. Area with strict gun control laws (Washington, D.C.; England; etc.) have high rates of crime committed utilizing guns.
2. Areas that allow citizen to conceal and carry have lower rates of crime (There was an area in Florida that once had strict gun laws and switched to allow citizen to conceal and carry hand guns. Crime in that area dropped [statistically] significantly).
My plan for helping to reduce crime.
1. Adopt conceal and carry laws.
2. Allow citizens to conceal and carry if they have passed a firearms training program and a background check (for fellonies).
3. Perform a ballistic finger print of any weapon to be registered. Yes, all hand guns should be registered in order to conceal and carry.
There were more premises to my paper. However, you get the drift. Good, honest, law-abiding citizens should be able to conceal and carry. The training will help prevent the gun from being accidentally dischared or taken away from the owner. Registering and ballistic finger printing will help the gun to be traced back to the owner, if someone is shot with it. Of course, it will be impareative for gun owners to report stolen weapons as soon as they know they are missing. Is it a perfect system. No. Is there room for improvement? Yes. Is it better than what we currently have in place? I think so.
Thanks,
Sean
The Department of Homeland Security has determined that this is definitely some sort of weapon of mass destruction.

this one remindes me of a poster Strong Bad would have on his wall reminding him not to kill his little brother Strong Sad.
I think that this sums up why we don't have flying cars.
It looks like the folks at Quizno's have already setup a web page to pay homage to this new "moon" of ours.
So, in exchange for a domain name, poor Mike Rowe gets to be assimilated?
