It was called system design it was a group project class. We had all the problems with people that didn't work with the group. The teacher gave out the lead roles to students who could be counted upon. Weekly every student had to submit grades for the students and how they were doing within their group. Everyone did a fair amount of work then cause their grade was at stake.
The first group project was to develop a simple game with specs that the teacher gave us. We did it and then afterward we spent 2 weeks writing a paper on our problems on how it worked out as a group, what we could have improved and stuff like that, then we spent a week of that time discussing that. We looked at software development lifecycles during this time also. Then we picked a style of cycle we linked and we were given the next project.
The next project was the largest to date and lasted till the end of the semester. It was to interpret the governments (tiger database) road data and build a piece of mapping software much like google maps, but it had to use their data, and we had to draw the maps and paths on them then. A group of 10 students tackled that in less then a month. It looked at algorithms, efficiency problems, gui design and also how to effectively use cvs solutions.
We completed everything on time. We spent alot of time in the lab and we were understanding of others outside commitments. But everyone had to carry their own load. It helped that our department is only 15 people 10 of which were in that class... So each of us knew the others well and how they worked or didn't.
As for being prepared outside I went into the work place with a semester of internship under my belt and was able to jump right in a be a productive member of the team. Others from the class had the same experience.
shameless plug... www.cs.moravian.edu it's class csci 334
I dunno I finalized my switch on linux once I got E. I have alot of my friends hooked. And the applications are there for your average everyday user. I had my sister and parents switched for a while. Now that my sister is going off to college in the fall she bought a mac.
I know not everyone is going to switch so you have a point... but presentation has alot to do with it for most people. Even simple stupid stuff.
Gaming on linux isn't bad. I've yet to come across a game that I want to play that doesn't work under cedega or doesn't have a linux client. It turns out that I also happen to be a huge nwn fan (even before I switched) and play alot of unreal tournament and quake. But I have other things that I still play like WoW, starcraft, sim city 2k and they all seem to work just fine. Granted I can't run the cutting edge games but most people get them, play them for a short time and dispose. This saves me money. If I buy 3-4 games a year I'm lucky. But I play them all into the ground.
I imported one of these a while ago. Excellent unit. Great for teaching. Also gives an awesome effect in the living room at night time when it's too rainy to go out:)/starnut
Welfare fraud investigator? sounds riviting! Maybe we can all collaborate to capture those fraudulent in real life! Our we could raid the city I live in for it *ducks*
you might try a nortel contivity vpn box. We have had good experiences with them where I work. You can run a client then to connect to it or if you opt for the SSL model then you can just hand out the webaddress and a java based client will run.
It's fairly easy to setup. Support seems great (but I work directly with the companies nortel rep)
We're just starting to roll them out company wide two 100 seat boxes. We've had beta users on the SSL VPN portal for months. The normal client version has been in production for a long time..
But this is only if you are looking for a hardware solution. The SSL card is a bit pricy as it's essentially another PC on a pci card that you put in the boxes.
I've generally had the same experience with gentoo. Most of the time you can find the answer easily with a quick browser search. If you post on the forums it's because you couldn't find it with a google search (or you found something like it and they usually link it showing they've done some work) or you have no clue in hell where to start and you are stuck.
I've never gotten an ill reply even if it was some dumb question just I was going about it completely in the wrong way. But most of the people have done research before they post and at least understand the system.
I introduced my sister to linux via gentoo. She was having a problem with windows viruses and I told her you can run linux but you shoudl really know something about it. I gave her a cd and printed the whole gentoo install manual for her told her it takes a while to install btu you will understand how things work when you are done and set her off. She came back with some questions which I gladly answered and she's fairly fluent now.
You have to have the willingness to learn I think. I got alot of RTFM responses when I first started with RedHat. I would try everything I could and still got it. Many times it was when you went to a specific project to ask for help. They had heard the same thing over and over so they were sick of it but the problem is I hadn't heard it yet and it wasn't documented. there isn't a way to fix that it's like asking a cashier a price of an item and they blow up at you or say it's on the bottom. It isn't because they specifically don't like you it's just they have answered the same question for the past 20 people so to them it's repetitive.
Note: I worked there previously and I left because I got a better job full time.
I noticed while there that it wasn't so much the best buy rebates that people had problems with. I worked customer service and we regularly offered to fix a problem with a rebate right there in front of you if you had a problem and recieved a rejection letter from best buy.
However the big problem was the 3rd party rebates. (AKA when you have more then one rebate for a product). The rebates that went through individual companies usually seemed to come back unfullfilled. So while everyone gets upset at the company the problem exists all over. These third party rebates are often given at all retailers and aren't exclusive. Best Buy won't honor them because they are not theirs.
I don't see how they will fix the third party rebates. As long as the companies offering them don't care then it's going to be a problem.
I know the store I worked in went out of it's way to make the customer happy as long as oyu didn't jump down a rep's throat (because it's obviously their fault *sarcasm*) the moment you step up to the counter. The reason was we wanted return customers. Often there were times that people walked out screaming they would never shop here again to cause a scene. Next week I'd see them back and have to help them again and they were quiet as could be (kinda amusing to me). So while people say they will stop shopping at a store I find not many hold themselves to that.

hahaha verizon covering all of PA is a joke. I live in a major city in PA, off a major road. For 3 years they have been telling me both over the phone and the web that their highspeed service is availiable here..
Now call to sign up they will sign you up. But when they get out to my house they go no it's definately not avialiable here. We don't know why we said it was..
Bad expieriences *shakes*
Sears? Although I might have missed that article.. But since it hasn't been posted to fark yet.. I'm pretty sure slashdot won't have it yet either...
now that I read fark I see a big crossover...
so sad to see them go. Played the games, enjoyed the book, became part of the community. It gave me a world to escape to.. They were really creating worlds. It's ashame that after the first it didn't really catch on as much anymore...
true.. Some bands even come back several times a year to different venue's I live by philly and there are lots of concerts. Few conventions. I got to go to the linux expo in new york 2 years ago however. That was fun!
readable by subscribers before hand.. If subscribers can take down a link (and I confirm it was overloaded while it was still from the mysterious future) then thats a weak web server...
I worked and am still currently co-oping for PPL (www.pplweb.com) excellent company. They hire lots of interns each year and are based mainly out of Pennslyvania. They do however have offices in montana, chile, and europe. Extremely interesting and surprisingly lots of tech jobs.
someone actually will.. I wouldn't be so surprised if you didn't see some of this code end up on gnome or kde... Enlightenment is very fast. Even if you don't like it's window management styles their graphics code is quite amazing...
I completly agree. I am all about community in gamves. I've tried several mmorpg's and none of them really held my attention all that long. WoW held it for a bit but that faded.
I think a big part of the reason people play online games is community and I just wasn't finding it was as tight as on muds or games with smaller groups of players like a neverwinter nights dedicated shard.
the original pc version actually did not this is when it was I guess a test release? It was free to play through most of the game. that stopped when they stopped the dc (version 1) from being free. after that they required the hunters license on all versions.
not only is it good they got support but it's good advertisement too. I was looking for a site system like that but was unsatified with those I had found even the commercial ones.

Sonic is a sega game. Sega has been producing ports of old games for both Sony Systems and Nintendo systems since the Dreamcast went kaput.
Sega announced they will release many genesis titles on the service.
