This is a pile of hogwash. All cultures are not created equal. Some cultures can become worse through immigration because those immigrants often bring bad cultures with them. Similarly, some cultures improve through immigration when the immigrants bring a better culture with them.

The idea that lots of immigration and diversity lead to the best ideas bubbling to the top is just wishful thinking.

I'm not anti-immigration, but I think the citizens of any country would be wise to have careful selection criteria for immigrants.

Also, higher population always means more pollution. This is also a good thing for countries to keep in mind.

To keep the system solvent, the retirement/pension age needs to go up to at least 68.

This may be true from an economic point of view, but different people age differently, and different jobs cause people to age differently.

68 is an extremely high retirement age for a substantial percentage of the population, and dare I say it, downright unfair to a lot of people.

I feel like the world economy is slowly moving toward "you work until you drop dead". I think that's unfortunate.

There's already some really nice port hubs available for cheap.

Someone needs to get handed a few decades of jail time for this. By somone, I mean someone with Director, or C_O after their name. Better yet a few someones.

So here's the thing. We are currently experiencing the Computer Security Dark Ages. The security situation at almost ALL companies is as crappy as Equifax (not that Equifax should be off the hook as a result).

The first problem is that security is way too hard. When 99.9% of people can't get something right, you have to start wondering if humans and education aren't the problem, but instead, if the tools are. Things should be ultra-paranoid super secure by default, and it should be downright hard to "un-secure" them.

The second problem is that when it comes to software development, management generally cares about three things most of all, I will list them in order here:

    1. Get it done fast

    2. Get it done fast

    3. Get it done fast

Software development is shit these days because the only thing that matters is speed. Oh, they often give security, reliability, and correctness some token attention, especially after news of big hacking incidents, like the Equifax breach. But really, all they care about is getting work done fast, and it's costing all of us much more, big time, in the long run.

  19. Regarding computer and data security, it's going to get (much) worse before it gets better. We're currently in the Dark Ages of Computer Security... but we haven't hit bottom yet.

Company culture in this area is just totally, utterly, hopelessly broken. They value speed above all else, so you end up with developers pulling libraries/jars from all over the Internet (many or most with huge security holes), you have companies incentivizing employees to get things done as quickly and cheaply as possible, you have companies clamoring for the cheapest labor available, including offshoring critical business logic.

None of these things are good for customers. It's a dumpster fire. Identities stolen, lives destroyed, and ultimately, it's us consumers who pay higher prices for all this lack of security and the resulting fraud.

It seems obvious business cannot and will not properly manage themselves when it comes to the subject of computer and data security. This is where we really need the government to step in, and lay down some laws with some serious teeth.

    Oh well, one can dream...

  23. Because of how our government is structured, low populated rural counties can politically outnumber high density urban cities. NY City has a combined population greater than the 9 least populated states combined, yet politically is not commensurately represented.

We have a flawed system, to be sure, but should the people of NYC get to boss around all the people in the 9 least populated states? I think it's probably a good thing that geographically separated people have a right to govern themselves.

  24. Can we not have a discussion without blaming something on "the left" or "the right"?
