How much does the damn thing cost? From the article I know it cost "$400 less than the similarly spec-d import UX90" but considering the I have no idea what the UX90 is let alone how much it cost how am I supposed to know from the "review" how much it costs?
I think Blu-Ray may have the upper hand with a cooler sounding name. Like it or not but Joe Sixpack may be more lible to go with the cooler sounding tech. There's a reason those slimeballs in the marketing department get paid so well.

Perhaps a heavily secured, stripped-down copy of some stable version of *nix could provide a high-integrity read-only core underlying a more sophisticated, extensible, and flexible full-featured OS.
I would say that it has more to do with the fact that the system designers looked at the availiable COTS CPUs and decided that the PowerPC was better suited to the task. Most likely the PowerPC's SIMD/vector unit (AltiVec) was superior to the offerings of other similar processors namely Intel's SSEn on the Pentium IV.
After the choice was made to go with the PowerPC/AltiVec processor piles and piles of hand optimized ASM code was created by some very well funded geeks to perform what I'm sure is an ultra high bandwidth and sample rate siganl processing system.
I work indirectly for Nextel.
The plan is that Nextel's iDEN network will be operated in place until 2010. In the mean time customers will be encouraged to move to Sprint's up coming EV-DO/CDMA2000 based net. After 2010 the iDEN network will be taken offline.
Sprint's current net will have Push-to-talk (PTT) capability graphed onto it and users of both networks will be able to PTT each other.
What do I think? I think it will fail miserably. In a few years I think that Verizon's bet on rolling out EV-DO coast to coast before anyone else will pay off and Sprint (the new Sprint-Nextel company is taking Sprint's name) and Cingular will feel it. (I'm not sure about T-Mobile as they provide basicly a low cost no frills phone only service.)
If you need entropy on the cheap check out LavaRnd. LavaRnd uses a low cost off the shelf "webcam" with it's lens cap in place as a random number generator.
This is the first time I've heard of Meetup.com. Too bad, it truly looks interesting. Hopefully someone will clone it soon. Why not Google? It seems like a great application for AdWords.
why not put it in the form of some sort of implant, like the ID chips people put in their pets?
The implants you speak of are RFID tags and judging by your relatively low Slashdot UID (66383) you should have a pretty good idea to what degree most people around here thinkg of RFID tags.
I live in the United States so does this mean that there's a chance that Clippy might get the CIA to kidnap me and take me another country, say Uzbekistan where they will have the local govenrment torture me until I renounce my FOSS ways?
If you don't know what I'm talking about search for the CIA's "Extraordinary Rendition" program.
I agree that PS/2, serial and parallel ports shouldn't be taking up space on the back side of a motherboard. Although because they are simple 'dumb' interfaces that require very little silicon to implement I hope that manufactures at least continue to provide a serial port or two in the form of pin headders somewhere on the board.

If you love crab I recommend staying away from king crab; it's totally overrated. Dungeness crab beats king crab any day of the week.

Am I the only person tired of tray loading optical drives? Are we ever going to see slot loading adopted by major manufactures of high quality drives?

Check this out. The guy built exactly what you are looking for. Here is another one.

Especially when your current security measures are so sound.

Wouldn't something like Coraid's ATA-over-Ethernet based product EtherDrive product make more sense for building massive storage array like this?

Something I would love to see is sites that are composed of valid XHTML placed higher in the ranks then totaly invalid/outdated code (sorry Slashdot).
