  1. Re:How exactly is this a bad thing? on Italy Approves Jail for P2P Users · · Score: 2

But the punishment here (incarceration, inevitable loss of job and possibly male rape) hardly fits the crime. It will turn some geeks into "real" criminals - burglars, fraudsters and robbers - by the time they get out, you can guarantee that.

  2. Like they're really a danger to society on Italy Approves Jail for P2P Users · · Score: 1

This is a case of the tail wagging the dog, I think. if you want to stop them, do something appropriate like confiscate their computers and ban them from using the Net for 5 years (like Kevin Mitnick). It's not as if any individual P2P user has much impact on the level of "piracy" - there are plenty of big gangs and under-utilised CD pressing plants to take care of that.

Probably not. Digital zoom is useless because it just magnifies part of the picture without increasing resolution. It may be useful for video (especially if the CCD has a higher resolution than TV) but it's essentially a "marketing feature" for still photography.

Anyway, with 500MP you're going to be severely limited by the resolving power of the lens. It's quite difficult to get even 100 line pairs per mm with the best 35mm photographic lenses (lenses for larger formats tend to be much worse because it's harder to maintain accuracy over a large glass area, plus it's not as necessary with lower enlargement factors). A 500MP sensor needs a pretty exceptional telescope in front of it.

I was also 8 in 1977. I thought seeing SW was one of the best experiences of my life. The audience even applauded when the first "Star Wars" caption appeared on the screen at the beginning.

My father, however, slept from about 10 minutes in until the end of the film - and he was only 4 years older then than I am now. I still feel this was some kind of treason.

In response to the original article, I think Ep III can only be saved if:

    • the set designers manage to achieve convergence between the shiny Ep I-II stuff and the beaten-up OT stuff (why did Amidala's Naboo ship look more modern than than anything in the OT?)
    • Palpatine is made to look increasingly like the monster from Ep III
    • the droid memory-wiping is handled so it doesn't look like an afterthought and
    • the film actually closes with the opening chase from Ep IV. Now that would send a shiver down my spine, like in Ep II when you see the original moisture farm with that orange and black ceiling.

What percentage of the UK public do you think actually turn their mobile off completely when entering a filling station? I'd wager it is less than 10%. Now, when was the last time you heard of a major fire at one? I heard of one in the last year, but that was because a car crashed into the pumps at 50mph.

I'm sure there is a remote theoretical risk, but think of all the petrol that gets spilled on the ground giving off vapour, and all the cars with "leaky" ignition (try lifting the bonnet of an old car with dirty HT leads in the dark, and see the sparks fly). That must be a much higher risk.

This getting way [OT], but bin Laden's original aim was simply to get the US military out of Saudi. This is happening anyway because the Saudis no longer wanted the US there - it's not like Iraq is going to invade neighbouring Kuwait again - not as a direct result of 9/11.

Unfortunately, reducing Afghanistan from a Third World country to worse, and invading Iraq for no clear strategic reason other than GWB's dad never managed it, means bin Laden isn't going to go into retirement just yet.
