  4. Re:Wii and homebrew on Wii Hacked for Better Homebrew Games · · Score: 1, Interesting

I don't really see it as bad for Nintendo. The PS1 was easily hackable, and it did extremely well. The PS2, not quite as hackable early on, but with the release of HDAdvance and the Mr Brown code exploit, it became easier to hack than the PS1. Don't forget about swap magic. The PS2 has done so well that Sony is continuing to sell and support them. The XBox was another relatively easily hacked machines, with early plugin chips, later solder chips and soft-modding. It also has done extremely well (although Microsoft did take a big loss, but that's their fault for selling at a loss; they still did well enough to move on to the 360).

N64? Hard to pirate, didn't do very well. The only real exception to this is Sega's Dreamcast, which was very easy to pirate/run homebrew, but the failure on that machine had more to do with Sega's marketting issues, game library, and previous failures with the Saturn and Genesis 32x and CD systems. Sega was in trouble long before Dreamcast rips.

The Wii is already popular with the older and casual gamer crowd, and that population usually wouldn't go through the hoops involved in a hardware or even software mod. I only see this as a win for Nintendo, despite the fact that they will try to squash it.

Component parts may become cheaper, but just having a factory and operating it costs money. I'm sure there is some sweet spot where you don't want to produce below a certain amount. Not to mention the fact that they want as many people to buy as possible, because the big N will make more money on games.

I bet one of the 1st Wii updates will be more flash ram, or possibly a small hard drive (but much more likely to be more flashram). Maybe a built in NIC.

No, I think Nintendo is probably running at or near capacity, but the next step would be to open or expand a factory, and they don't want to invest the money, just to satisfy initial demand that will inevitably decline in the future.

Actually, they do sell linux servers to businesses. I have one. Red Hat and I believe Suse were the only choices, so I went for a bare machine and dropped Debian on it. Dell just doesn't sell Ubuntu to businesses, which kind of makes sense, considering Ubuntu is primarily a user-oriented operating system, despite the existence and capability of installing it as a server OS. I do find it strange that they can offer some kind of support for their server OS systems, but they won't for the home. Maybe it is just to early, and they are already taking a risk as-is. Maybe it is because the support comes from the Red Hat Network (RHN), I'm not familiar with Ubuntu's support system. I expect to see support pop up in the future.

Having seen about every PS2 I have ever come across die at some point due to laser alignment issues, it helps to not use the new consoles if you have an old one that will play the games. I keep a gamecube around so I don't put any additional wear on the Wii by playing GC games on it. Same for the PS2. I softmodded mine and play almost everything off the hard drive, and I have a slim model for the stuff that won't work on the hard drive.

I know GP asked about PS1, but for the PS2, they tend to be able to read CD games long after they get finicky on DVD discs, and part of the softmodding process involves booting a PS1 CD.

Punishment was too harsh, but it sounds like he did break policy, and the university is in the right to do something. If he didn't have permission to bypass security on their network for research, then he has no excuse.

Now if it was the latter, and he did this on his OWN machine on the university network, then unless they state somewhere specifically that you "MUST BE RUNNING CCA TO ACCESS OUR CRAPPY NETWORK!!" then the university doesn't really have a case.

IANAL, but I am in IT. We are slightly lax about what we allow our employees to do with their machines, since we have less than 200 employees. But if they bypassed security? Break of usage policy, case closed.

I had the same thing. I took a spare CRT, and my boss at the time really liked the setup, so he got me matching 17" LCD's. One of my coworkers also got matching 17's. My old boss now has 4 monitors, 2 19" LCD's, a 17", and a widescreen 24. He only really does work on 2 of them, the 17 is for viewing our internal help desk website for new tickets, and the widescreen is for our camera DVR system. My new boss now has a 19" LCD to connect to his laptop, and we are talking about pushing 2 monitors down to some of the regular non-IT employees in certain positions where they would benefit.

It's nice to work in an environment where people recognize potential productivity increase when they see it. 17" LCDs are cheap now. Easily $150 or less. A spare video card or a dual vid card can be cheap, I spent $35 on the one I use at work.

If you job complains about spending $150 on a long term investment in your productivity, then you should start looking for a new job. Of course, people are giving away CRTs all the time, you could always offer to bring one in. Check freecycle.
