  1. It's Payne! on Max Payne 2 Previewed · · Score: 1

The screen shots look good. I wonder if they are going to keep the bullet-time tricks in this one. In the first game it was innovative but to be honest I'm kind of tired of seeing it. Bringing a love interest into the mix isn't such a bad idea. Fans of noir know that you need a femme fatale to betray and save you. Does anyone else think the femme looks like Demi Moore though?

Actually when I was in Japan the sighting of Godzilla was just a common occurrence, like earthquakes in California. I saw Ultraman and Godzilla battling it out in Tokyo and I was snapping pictures like mad! The Japanese folks who saw me doing this just shook their head, muttered "tourist", and kept walking.

I found the source code and the most current downloads here. You are correct, there is already a linux version (as well as Mac, Dos, Windows and even IRIX!). The source code is done in Lisp. I think this is the first and only time a major game release was made using this language. Someone correct me if I am wrong.

Saladpuncher came about when I was younger staying up late watching commercials with some friends. We saw the saladshooter and were suprised that something so worthless and silly could be sold. We made up the saladpuncher as something that was even dumber and more worthless. As time went by we starting calling anything stupid "a saladpuncher". So I'm basically calling myself dumb :)

Strangely enough the game doesn't feature a monkey of any sort. I assume that the monkey is flying the craft but you never get to see him. Some cut-scenes of monkey action would have been great...but no dice. It's still a fun game though.

It works on 98/XP just fine. Of course if you hate Microsoft then the source code can also be dug up with a little googling allowing someone to make a linux version.

  6. Night of the Living Dead on Movie-Licensed Games That Might Not Suck · · Score: 1

I always thought this would make a great game. One player takes the role of the humans trapped in the house. The other takes the role of the zombies outside. Set it up like an overhead RTS but without any resources to gather. The only goal is that the humans have to survive until daylight or, if you are the zombies, kill everyone. The humans are quick and armed but can suffer from low moral and can be infected. The zombies are slow and stupid but you get A LOT of them. You would have to spruce it up with different units for both sides so that different tactics could be employeed: fresher zombies are faster, some of the humans are sharpshooters, etc.

  9. timing is key on Tomb Raider Delays Worry Eidos · · Score: 1

I suspect the reason Eidos is worried is because they wanted to time the release of the game with the new Lara Croft movie in June. Like the Hulk, Spiderman, X-Men, and The Matrix these games get a huge boost in sales based on how close they are tied to the marketing of their movie. They spend millions on tie-ins for the films. Heck, the last Lara Croft movie had a cereal, candy bar and I think even a special edition Hummer...or some other car...I didn't pay too much attention.

  11. Attention Sega: Release the server source on Most Dreamcast Online Servers Halted · · Score: 4, Interesting

Sega could pull off a huge public relations coup by releasing the source code to their servers so that the development community that has grown up around the Dreamcast can continue to grow. Sure, they wont make any money but it will go a long way towards making people trust them enough to buy their next console...if they ever make one.

  12. give the patent away on How to Become a Patent Millionaire · · Score: 4, Insightful

Can I patent something that is going to make some huge corporations tons of money and then release it to the public? Basically that would mean that now no one has an exclusive patent on it and everyone benefits. When Salk invented the polio vaccine I think he either refused to patent it or he patented it and then gave it away so everyone could manufacture it. He didn't want to profit off of the pain and suffering of others. Cool guy.

  13. Gross generalizations ahead on Japanese Arcade Scene Still Going Strong · · Score: 4, Insightful

I was in Japan through 97-98 and noticed two things that would explain why their arcade scene isnâ(TM)t dieing. The first is that the Japanese people like to do things in groups and going to an arcade is a fun activity that can be done with a lot of your friends. So why havenâ(TM)t home console system killed the arcade places like they have in the states? Well, that brings up my second point which is that they tend to keep visits to other peopleâ(TM)s houses down to a minimum. Every time you go to someoneâ(TM)s place you have to bring a gift (omochi, green tea, etc) and it gets to be a pain. Group gaming activities at home seem to be rare in Japan which keeps the arcades thriving. Of course I could be wrong :)

  14. Re:Not really a beta yet on System Shock 2 Enhanced? · · Score: 2, Informative

You can supposedly fix this by doing the following:

1.Create a folder named res in your shock2 folder
2.Move all the resource files (*.crf) from the shock2 root into the res folder
3.Alter install.cfg to reflect the change of resource location: eg resname_base C:\Program Files\Sshock2\res+E:\shock from my install.cfg

I haven't tested this yet since I'm at work but I will as soon as I get home. Let me know if it works for anyone else out there.

You can also change the resolution of the game by opening up cam.cfg in notepad and changing the line game_screen_size to either 1280 1024 or 1600 1200. Cool huh?

  15. Re:This makes sense on Shadowbane Hacking Redux - Guild Bannings · · Score: 2, Interesting

Not a bad idea at all. Since this is a role-playing game they should all just role-play the events as though some evil god/deity/demon/Q-Continuum thingy took over for a few hours. Leave the city as a warning to those that attempt to use magic (hacking) for evil.

  16. This makes sense on Shadowbane Hacking Redux - Guild Bannings · · Score: 2, Interesting

A person (or guild) cheating in the game should be punished IN the game. Instead of bringing legal action against the warrior who cheated his way to a +25 Vorpal Sword of Absolute Killing the character should be stripped of his items and banned. Hopefully any characters "harmed" in the exploits will be returned to full status and given a few experience points, or what-not, for having survived the temporal disturbance (or whatever else they are going to call it).

  17. This place reeks of adventure and excitement, Sam! on Sam & Max - Freelance Police Previewed · · Score: 5, Interesting

Well first I need to say that having Steve Purcell back for the sequel is a step in the right direction. All of his stuff for Sam and Max (comics and games) is brilliant and shouldn't be done without him. Look at Monkey Island to see what happens when the original creator doesn't return. The Curse of Monkey Island and Escape from Monkey Island were good games but when you compare them to the original 2 they come up lacking.
The new Sam and Max is also being produced by Dan Connors who worked on the original game (which is great), Day of the Tentacle (very good), The Dig (pretty darn good), The Curse of Monkey Island (good), and the big one itself: Grim Fandango (friggen awesome!). Looks like the new Sam and Max should be great...in my own very subjective opinion of course :)

PIRATE: We're going to bury you with our extra stash!
    MAX: BURIED ALIVE? I'm alarmed!
PIRATE: We're going to shoot you first.
    MAX: Oh, thank God!

Yeah, he is looking a little deader. In the original game I always thought he was supposed to look like one of those old style "men in black" from the 50s. The ones who would show up at your house and tell you that you DIDN'T see that flying saucer and whatnot. He has that sorta G-Man crossed with an insurance salesman look...and nothing can be scarier than that.

I don't see Steve Purcell's name anywhere on the press release. He was the original creator...anyone know if he is back on board this game? It looks sweet though and the trailer is pretty funny. Hopefully they won't make a bad sequal to my fave game.

  21. Re:Just curious on Infogrames Officially Changes Name To Atari · · Score: 1

The original name of Atari was Syzygy but the name was already taken. Bushnell and Dabney were both players of Go, a Japanese strategy game, so they took a list of words from that game: Sente(which means "the upper hand"), Atari(similar to "Check" in English) and Hanne(an overtaking move). Atari was the only one that was approved by the Office of the Secretary of State in California. Look here for more details.
