I have no problem with the reception with the reciever on top of a steel-cased computer. I have to say, I just bought it on a whim when I was looking for a new toy, and wasn't expecting much, but it has been great. The mouse is weighted perfectly and the added buttons (forward, back, up and down scroll, and sort of an alt-tab substitute) are fantastic. I was thoroughly impressed with it, and will buy more in the future (but only if I get a great deal again).

    1. Don't read Slashdot

    3. Don't give them fuel for the fire by commenting in those stories- if they are unpopular enough, they'll go away.
Ninety percent of the stories submitted have an opinion inserted in the blurb. It sounds like you want bland recitation of the news listed here. Go to the original sites that are linked if that's what you want. Jesus, you don't own Slashdot, and if you're a subscriber, cancel. You're out nothing.

Listen, I live in Illinois (The land of Lincoln and Bribes for licenses), and I do not believe for one second that given this program were in effect at the time of 9/11 it would have made us any safer for one reason. People ultimately distribute these cards. Do you really believe that someone is going to look at all of the scanned documents that every worker takes every day? How reliable is that scanner? Is there any image degradation? What does your social security card look like? I know mine is practically illegible because it is illegal to laminate them. Do you really believe that this ridiculously complicated proposal will nab all of the bad guys as opposed to creating hassles for those who will follow the rules? There are ways around any rules, so long as they are enforced by people.

Thank God somebody recognizes the problem. I would add one additional caveat, however. I believe the 20 minute figure was arrived at by hooking up a fresh copy of XP (with no service packs that you can't even buy anymore)to an unprotected broadband network and then surfing the net without downloading any security updates. No Linux user in their right mind would do this, I don't know why they would expect otherwise from an informed Windows user. Now that the firewall is turned on by default, MS has corrected it's most aggrevious error, and a new copy of XP is firewalled and has the user turn on automatic updates after install. If they would only force the user on to Windows Update after install, I think that is what you can reasonably expect. Also, I think it's high time that some manufacturer tells the truth about where 90% of trojans, spyware, etc. come from. The truth is that people are going to some pretty nefarious places on the net to pick this stuff up, and that is the majority of the problem. They then pass it on to their contacts, and you have the massive infestation problem we have today.

Do you use Linux without a firewall? Not to say that it's equivilant or anything, but in this day and age, it is really quite ridiculous to suggest running anything connected to the internet without using a firewall.

  16. Re:Consulting on What Do People in the IT Field Do for Side Jobs? · · Score: 2, Insightful

I've been doing evening/weekend jobs for years. The secret is to tell them up front that you are only available to them during certain hours and even those are not guaranteed. Also, charge between $30 and $50 per hour and they get you for at most a third of what you're worth on paper as a consultant. Deal only with small businesses with minimal needs and very little mission-critical data. Make friends with them and be perfectly honest about everything. Also, bring in your toys when you meet with them, so you can convince them that they need them because they're cool. Build their machines for them, and charge physical labor by the job, make a higher hourly rate that way, and you'll be able to add to the system if need be. You will still get the occasional secretary to call you during work with an email crisis or whatever, but nip those in the bud through the boss. Keep detailed records of everything you do for them. Make sure they understand what is your responsibility, what is the ISP's, what is the phone company's, etc. Offer to be a liason between those companies and the business at your regular hourly rate so they don't have to know what's wrong, just that something is and you'll handle it. I get all the work I want this way, and pass unwanted work on to friends (sometimes even non-techies for the lightweight stuff). I keep about 15 clients, and I sometimes get too busy. I would say if you build up a list of about ten clients through friends, family, even putting up fliers, you'll find all the work you want.
