    The skinny: Congress will approve the DMCA by a unanimous vote and President Clinton will sign it into law, because, well, everyone favors copyright protection.

    Long-term outlook: The only possible trouble with this one that I can foresee would be if someone were to launch a Web site that allowed anyone and everyone to post video clips of whatever they pleased. That might get sticky.


    I thought pornotube was stickier than youtube, but I suppose both are up to their necks.

    We hear about CC theft a lot and I am sure it does occur, but most of the time its embarrassment which is the real culprit.

    You are correct in stating that everything we do is because a path was laid out before us.
    We are standing upon the shoulders of giants without which we would have no basis for our current (possibly flawed) systems.

    With open source we can continue to build and make it better for everyone.

    Open Source is not a religion or an oppressive regime, if you don't like the way something is done you can make it better yourself.
    If others believe in your direction they will follow.

    After posting this I went away and did some more searching.
    I discovered a great thread about video playback between the author of mplayer and a guy inside nokia.

    Its a must read for anyone interested in the inner workings of the nokia devices.

    From what I know the screen can be updated reasonably quickly (because movies can play smoothly) but from what I can also gather is that this only occurs once the device clocks itself to 400mhz and talks directly to the lower graphics driver.

    I am not afraid of direct hardware knocking but think I need to get lower than python+gtk to get there.

    I got one a couple of weeks ago and I am more than happy with it.
    However it is not a slick device like an iphone.

    Does anyone have any information about a Windows based development toolchain?
    Currently I am starting with Python+gtk but on the device I am finding performance limited (even compared to the old pocket pc .net code which I thought crawled along). It appears as though its main problem is refreshing the 800*480 screen quickly.

    Just do what I do with links on slashdot.
    Pretend you are playing a game and in your head just before you click a link, think "It is pitch black. You are likely to be eaten by a grue."

    It works wonders and the next time you play the game you are more cautious about clicking links.
    At the absolute very least the grandparent did not hide any of his links in redirection services.

    I just paid £289 for a nokia n810 with Maemo Linux installed.
    When I told them that linux is free and tried to walk out of the store without paying they got the guards to ruff me up a bit.

    Actually they are targeting the single instant gatso type cameras which flash you for daring to drive past a bit quick.
    I doubt you could take down a whole colony of averaging cameras in enough time to not be detected.

    The only problem with releasing trojans in Linux is that the damned things have to be GPL.
    Having to leave the contact details for people wanting the source also makes it a bit tricky.
