    This guy is doing nothing more than anyone standing in front of a VC.
    HE has a concept, he wants to make it, he thinks it will work.

    My bet, he will make it, we will use it and it will be a success.
    It looks like the kind of app that a tablet is dying out for and looks so natural and easy to use.

    Follow up...

    I sold out.
    I installed WMP 10.0
    I used Internet Explorer 6.0.

    I still can't play this fucking thing (during the licensing for the stream it says "We apologize, this content must be played in the AOL Video Player. Please goto aol.com/video."

    Teething trouble, or over complexified DRM?

    It looks like a good time to hit the p2p.
    I wanna see B5 now damnit, how far off streaming torrents are we?

    All I got was a big error message telling me I needed XP (not 64bit), Internet Explorer 6.0 and Media Player 10.0

    I hadn't seen anything about that until having a really close look, but if you go here:

    http://television.aol.com/in2tv/heroes_horror_tv?d efaultLevel=0&defaultItem=0

    And click on the "HI-Q Video" link in the spotlite, it brings up the error page.

    Its only after this (in Internet explorer) that it asks about an ActiveX control.
    I believe however the FLASH console hosts the expected ActiveX and thats what is telling you its needed.
    (Standard missing plugins are the green jigsaw pieces usually...)

    In2TV is also out of bounds to other alternative browser users inside XP.
    Unless you use Internet explorer 6.0 and Media Player 10 you can't watch the big streams.

    This obviously rules out Firefox users, so no Babylon 5 for me :(

    You can't even use it on XP 64.

    Damn good though, and so far the only thing that has tempted me to install WMP 10...
    Hell, I might even use IE for it as well.

    tip for Windows users who have removed their IE icon, open "My Computer" and directly enter the URL into the address bar - it converts from Explorer to Internet explorer automagically...

    I just did a search from google.co.uk (for kazaa lite) and got the following:

    Now, since I don't live in America and aren't governed by their rules, why in the hell is that blocked?

    Theres lots of robots designed for this purpose.

    Of course, they are just toys and the big deal is this will be rolled out, but heres a couple of things I thought of:

    USB Air Darts

    Controllable from the computer :D

    Automatic sentry gun
    Uses a built in camera to detect and aim at moving targets.

    Its all very half life ish, but plenty of fun.

    If your backing up the files NOW after you are infected, then you have a BIG problem with trust.
    The files have already been compromised.
    The only restoration process left is to restore to the backup taken BEFORE inserting the first Sony CD.

    Lets face facts, no normal person is gonna reinstall Windows purely because of this, they will uninstall it and that will be that.

    I thought it was proven that the stock market figures were self similar and fractal in nature.

    That is, if I display a graph of results but neglect to indicate the scale, it could apply to any scale from seconds to days to years.

    Its like looking at a coastline, from 100miles up it has rough egds and curly bits just like if your looking from 1 metre up on the beach.

    A sensible approach to a modern world.
    The trust model can work.

    Gaining the trust of your user base WILL be beneficial.
    If you treat them fairly, they will pay you back.

    As long as the torrent sites follow the DMCA rules (as it suggests the one in the article does) then the piracy can be tamed (and having lots of well intentioned customers warning them of torrents will help)

    Word of mouth will get this game far, I wonder just how many torrent downloaders will purchase this game vs an EA game?

    Does high downloads turn into high profits?

    I see something similar happening with Serenity, I saw it months ago after downloading it, but today went out and bought a copy.
    I want to tell Wheldon and the backers I support it and want more.

    It will depend upon orbit distances and locations.
    From what I remember, the MGS orbits usually take it further away from the planet, its only on a number of very low sweeps that it can get close enough for the really high detailed images.

    If it happens just once then its done its job.
    I managed to foobar the previous BOIS on the day I bought a motherboard (it needed a flash to cater for a newer cpu model I got with it - i hated seeing CPU UNKNOWN or whatever it was even though it was in spec).

    The gigabyte board was its replacement.

    The last motherboard I had was a gigabyte. It contained a Dual Bios system which could recover a user flashed bios back to factory defaults.
    Complete and utter safety in case of a bad flash.
    Heres a small THG article about it.

    You are right about most machines however, it may not be enough unless you can replace the bios.
    For the totally paranoid, take the suspect drive out and put it into a cleanroom machine.

    ...and nuke the entire site from orbit.
    It's the only way to be sure.

    Everything I know about rootkits tells me that you cannot detect one from within the running system, you have to be objective (I consider the current fingerprint detection to be working because of bugs in the rootkit implimentation, these will be "fixed" over time).

    Keep a known secure boot CD.

    Drain the battery and reset the bios then boot from that cd.
    If theres anything sophisticated enough to bypass this level of paranoia then it can damn well have my credit card number and I'll gladly send spam for them.

    I remember in the 680x0 days on my Amiga some bright spark came out with a program called ShapeShifter.

    It did as you said and translated the 680x0 Mac code into 680x0 Amiga code with barely any slowdown.

    It was a breath of fresh air, especially considering how poorly emulation ran on the Amiga platform up until this point.

    What goes around comes around, the Amiga once again proving it was well before its time :)

    I hope digg doesn't come and take over.
    Slash can cope with this new pretender and better it.
    I've not noticed many dupes recently (infact the latest code refresh which includes related stories shows they have put something in place), and whether its just me looking more closely or not, but articles are being posted quicker now than before (its likely because they are being submitted more often).

    Its us that makes slashdot what it is, if everyone submits an interesting article as often as we see them, then slash won't be outdated.

    I have for the first time subscribed to slash because I believe things are improving, I hope they continue.
