  1. Re:Half Life 2 on Library of Congress Considers Archiving Games · · Score: 1

I know with the super famicom they had a somewhat similar system called the satellaview (It wasn't over the internet so much as a Satellite system or something). While I haven't played many of the games made for that system (seeing as though I don't speak japanese), the complete remake of Zelda 1 (BS-Zelda) was captured and eventually stored somehow, even though it was a download game, as well as being time based (you could only play it certain times I think). There are patches that allow you to play it anytime you want in english, which is totally awesome since this game never got a full remake in America.

I would imagine that someone out there found a way to preserve games with xbox live and hence in the future I would hope you could play those games again.

I definitely agree with that. Teachers are our mentors and mental caregivers early on, and yet they get paid so little and a lot of great people who would be great teachers don't simply because you can't make a very good living out of it. It's one of the most confusing things about our society in America (then again I think a lot in America is backwards). Haven't the mentors and teachers of a culture typically been the ones that were revered the most?

I've known some really great and really talented teachers who are only in it for the joy of teaching. If it were just about money they said they definitely would have chosen another field.

So I definitely think our country should put their money where their mouth is. Education reformation always seems to come up in elections or in politics in general, but do teacher salaries ever get more than a cursory glance?

As the parent said, double the salary and then see how many teachers we start getting.

Everything about that article rings true for me... high school was a nightmare for me too. I hated it. Now that I'm finally past it (and have been for the last 5 years) my mind is starting to forget the pain, but you don't really forget it. Just because you're different, no matter what that difference is, you are bad to them. And even if it weren't a hellhole trying to be in school, I wouldn't have wanted some of those people as my friends because they are so shallow and cruel. I really feel for those people quoted above... thankfully I never was singled out for dangerous behavior (I had a principal who valued brainiacs), but I realize I could have been.. and that is scary. High school is one seriously fucked up place. When is this country going to realize that!!?? It pisses me off so much that this kind of thing is blatantly still allowed in schools!

This is exactly the kind of crap I'm going through right now in my computability theory class (its not calculus, but its a ton of math and logic), and it was the same with all the other math related advanced level courses. The material is hard enough as it is, I don't need teachers making it even harder..

I mean, I know they know the material backside down, but that is not grounds for assuming they know *how to teach it*. Knowing something and knowing how to teach it are two different stories, and unfortunately, most phd professors just don't care about the second part....

As far as examples go, they love sticking with the easy examples that everyone understands, but when it comes to homework and test time, they also love jacking the difficulty up a bazillion notches just to see if you can figure it out on your own.
