Disabling stuff in software, running XP, good god, someone put this thing out of its misery!

Honestly, if your going to disable something like the video/sound, that's what the bios is for.

And if you buy a rubbish all in one, of course you will get rubbish sound, just like if you buy a rubbish sound card. Some of the good quality all one MB's have some excellent chipsets built in. Logic prevails in this area, if you want to do professional sound recording you buy a soundcard matching your needs, if you want to play 3D games you get a matching video card (thought some MB's do come with not bad chipsets but the MB price reflects the addition of a video card that costs as much, if not more, as a standard MB.

People who insist that because its built in, its crap, do not seem to have perspective on the situation, a cheap and nasty all-in-one MB, will give you as much love as a cheap and MB with cheap and nasty add-on cards.

As they say, you get what you pay for.

  10. Short Term Effects on Cornering the World of Warcraft Markets · · Score: 4, Interesting

After having done various micro experiments, it seems apparent that price inflation/depreciation is a short term effect. If for example there is no mooncloth listed on the AH, listing the first item at an inflated price will result in most new items placed to be at a price just below that inflated price, effectively artificially inflating the 'standard' price, however testing has shown that this is a temporary effect as the cost of AH fees causes people to undercut other sellers until the 'globally acceptable' price is reached again.
Relisting the entire AH is an effective strategy for slowing this natural trend, however it effectively ensures that all newly listed items will undercut the existing artificial price, resulting in a loss of sale for the relisters, or requiring the relisters to actively purchase and relist all new items at diminishing returns.
Being on one of the most overpriced servers I'd have too say that the main effect of gold farmers is to increase the price of epic items, but also increases their availability.
Either way it is a short term effect. By purchasing items at the AH you are buying into a free trade economy and as such its effects. Ultimately it all comes down to supply and demand.

All I'd like to say is hand this guy a fucking clue....

"We're running a bit of an experiment. We're keeping track of the accounts that do this and will be shutting them off."

Does not mean, 'we are distributing it', I mean how fucking dumb is this guy? And 'accounts'? What accounts? What are you going to shut off? Your customers? Cause you can't do shit about the pirated copies. And if you had anything to do with the pirated copy, you just gave away your litigation rights.

If I own the copy and download another copy of the net this is legal! (think music terms), the only way it would not be if its stated in the shrink wrapped ULA, and that can be contested, and its PR suicide to litigate from valves point of view. I mean how would this headline sound "Valve Sues Customers".

If I don't own a copy, who cares, the only thing you can track is my IP, and that's dynamic, then you would have a john doe, case, try and get my name, and then prove I didn't own it. And the first thing I would do if I did get a legal letter, buy the game and I'm covered.

Fucking retard getting on /., how sad.

As for steam, I'm surprised that no one has brought up the issue of it being forced on HL1 users, I brought the HL1 way back. Now for me to play it I am forced to use steam. I never agreed to this nor was I advised of this when I first got the game. Yes I could make my own server, but it's forced by insecurity, Valve only provides an update path by steam so by default I am forced to use it.

And people think they won't abuse steam for their own good, has anybody here actually used it long term? Can we say "popup adds", "denial of service", "persistent self advertising", "silently pushed products" (unauthorized downloads of products), "marginalization of non-official content".

If the past is anything to go by Valve plans to use Steam as an aggressive marketing platform. And their attitude seems to be 'fuck the consumer', we are bigger than them.

You know I have been toying with how to waste my time, looking at different games.

I brought HL way back in the day, now I'm pretty pissed at Steam, I've played it quite a bit, but the more I do the more I hate it. All I play now days is Sven on 1.6 and luckily there are still a tone of 1.5 CS servers near me. I don't think they will be upgrading any time soon.

Some things to bitch about steam:

    * Not everyone has a 10MBit pipe!
    * Releasing patches every couple of days is not fun, I want to play now not download!
    * Steam DOES go down, especially on Friday nights. This really sucks if your planning to have a lan.
    * Steam authentication servers are running on Windowz Boxes! See above.
    * Ohh yeah and breaking support of gamespy and other such suxs.
    * Forcing me to watch your ads is really cheap.
    * Don't try and coerce me into buying more games from you. All I want to do is have the games I can play now listed!
    * Breaking HL single player is really lame (elevator bug), not fixing it after a million other patches really suxs.
    * Surreptitiously preloading games that I have to buy is REALLY LOW. You cost me bandwidth and then expect me to be happy to be bombarded with ads to buy your game?!

The more I use it the more I feel like Valve and associates don't give a shit about their customers. The reality is that HL was a good game, but without a lucky mod made by the community it would be long forgotten by now.

I was planning to buy the retail version of HL2 even though it would have been easier for me to just activate it via steam since it already preloads without asking.

You have just lost yourself a customer.

Reality is I'll probably get dumped a steam free copy at a LAN, play SP once or twice and leave it at that if things this year have been any indication.

As for UT2k4, its looking more and more appealing. I've been toying with the demo and been pondering buying it. The fact that THEY release a nocd patch so I don't need to mess with CD swapping/cracking for a server hosted Virtual CD makes it very appealing. I mean I always end up cracking it anyway because of this, but it's a real hassle. I think I know where the money that would have gone to HL2 is going.
