Why don't the theater owners strategically place high output infrared (LEDs) light sources behind the screens. Since most of the screens are full of holes, it should allow enough infrared light through to severly mess up the image recorded by the camcorders.
For those that don't understand, CCD cameras are highly sensitive to infrared light and will produce a white hotspot. Try it some time with your camcorder.. press a button on a remote while holding it infront of the camera and watch the results in the viewfinder. The higher output the IR, the bigger and more pronounced the hotspot would be.
Sounds like a job for Team Kyoto: Environmental Police.. F*ck Yeah!
Quite seriously though, the statement was made that "Bush must think we're stupid". I didn't believe so before the election.. but apparently slightly over 50% of Americans are.
Yeah, for those who don't know, the grey market is where a Canadian sets up a subscription to DirecTV (or whatever) from the U.S., and sets up their dish in Canada. It only violates the content regulations and stuff. They're still paying their bill and everything.
In Canada, paying for a US satellite television signal was made illegal in 1995, and pirating it was made illegal in 2002. Both are subject to a $5000 fine and up to one year in jail for individuals, and even higher for businesses.
Thank gawd they haven't made it illegal to subscribe to US satellite radio.. yet.
Only US satellite television has been deemed illegal by the supreme court, because there is Canadian competition. It was made illegal because the Canadian satellite companies bitched and moaned to the CRTC because they were losing potential subscribers to a superior service. Yes, Canadian companies buy laws too.
Since our air waves are ruled by the CRTC overlords, when did they allow XM to sell it's services.
Both Sirius and XM Radio have put in an application with the CRTC to offer satellite radio service in Canada. While it's currently grey market (ie: signup via their websites with a bogus US mailing address) here in Canada, there are more and more Canadians signing up. In fact I just recently bought a JVC PNP tuner to listen to Sirius (which has WAY better signal coverage in Canada than XM, and IMHO superior programming) and have convinced some friends to buy receivers, all of which are happy new satellite radio listeners.
Seriously though, why would anyone want to record and save music off either XM or Sirius? Satellite radio has the sound quality 'better than FM' but far inferior to CD quality. Besides, it would fall under fair use in Canada, where our judges still respect what that means.
You know, we had a section in the Alberta Highway Traffic Act that expressly stated "no televisions or video systems except in a motor coach" and that "it must be at no time visible to the driver of the motor vehicle".
The laws were updated into the 2003 Alberta Traffic Safety Act, and that section has been totally removed.
Similarly odd was the removal of act that required all 4 wheel motor vehicles to have mudflaps and they be a minimum of 6" off the ground.
Is it justified to repeal laws when enough people stop following them?
In Edmonton, Alberta (Canada) they are testing a new form of pedestrian signal indicator. In addition to the standard Walk and Don't Walk indicator is a countdown timer as to when the traffic light is going to turn RED. At the 2 second mark, the traffic light goes from GREEN to YELLOW and finally to RED at 0.
When I first saw it in action I thought it was an incredible idea and now I can't wait to see it at every intersection in the city.
Now I wish they would do something about those idiot peds that decide to hobble across the intersection on a DO NOT WALK light and don't make it across before the opposite traffic gets a green light.
I've been following and upgrading Firefox as new versions come out, and am bemused by the fact that the Mac version STILL doesn't render Slashdot properly. Anytime there's italic text, Firefox manages to overlap text with non-italic text.
There are still a few large customers of Wordperfect, like the Canadian Royal Mounted Police. The RCMP's IT departments are serious about security of their systems, and don't allow Microsoft Word on their systems, but use Wordperfect instead. Infact they are quite anal about security to the point of turning off Java, Javascript, Active X and all browser plug-ins on their deployed systems.
With the current flurry of Windows specific virii, worms and hacks, I can't say I blame them.
I was withdrawing money from a Royal Bank of Canada ATM when it crashed. When it rebooted it came up with OS/2 logo, which means this legacy OS is still finding purpose today.
Actually, it was on WSBK last night too, which is a US station, and a UPN affiliate. In Canada, I counted it being on three different channels, an hour apart from each other.. 7pm MST, 8pm MST and 9 MST.
Oh suuuure.. now ya tell me. When I bought their Discovery cd, the website listed on the card said it was only going to be Windows compatible, so I pitched the card as I'm running MacOS X.
People keep bringing up this lame DVD player because it's hackable. Whoopie! The damn thing STILL can't play half my DVD's properly without freezing and screwing up at branches (I've tried several of them too, so it wasn't just a defective unit)
So I say goodie goodie that you can hack it, if I can't even watch a movie from start to end then what's the point?
I'd say there's several major reasons to switch.. the fact that you can block pop up advertising is a major reason. The fact that is has far superior cookie and password management is a major reason. The fact that it has a better email and usenet client (than OE) is a major reason.
IR light affects the CCD pickup, not the remote sensor.
But your welcome to tape over the lens as well, that would really foil them then.

Mabey by version 1.0.. mabey.. *sighs*
Does that mean I have to start PAYING for the viruses I receive in my mailbox every morning? What about the virus updates I receive weeks later?

A friend of mine built one like that too.. however he put a piezoelectric BBQ starter in the end.. tap tap BOOM!
Personally, I keep my hard drive in my pants.. to each their own I guess. :o)
This service pack has been brough to you by Intel -- Now with new, faster SP1 processors.. Upgrade today!
December Fool's Day!
It's dead Jim!
Atleast it doesn't suck, like Stargate Infinity the cartoon spinoff.

No major reasons? According to who, Billy?
Parent modded to 4?! Insightful? *laughs*
It's the freakin air bag deployment sensor for christ sakes..
Can anyone give a layman's explanation of how the information is getting passed from point a to point b?
Magic.
Funny, I was going to say smoke and mirrors.
If you thought the original X-Box controller was huge, you're in for a rude awakening.
:o)
Apparently I wasn't the only one who thought so either..
